This is a very beautiful book with great illustrations and an extensive text. I'm no expert gardener, but here's a lot of practical tips on what to grow and how to do it.

I enjoyed reading this book and building your knowledge around growing vegetables at home. Lots of great advice and easy to understand.

There is a great deal of information in this book illustrated with many photos. Some of my favorite sections included the extensive information on composting, how to build and use raised beds, and what plants go well together. The little insert on which plants can grow so well that they will become weeds was a good warning. I liked their detailed instructions on vegetables like potatoes and carrots. There is information on how to store them. There are even a few recipes included.

This is a good, all around book for those who would like to grow their own vegetables.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

The photos and growing information for some vegetables are the best parts of this book. The publisher took excerpts from several books they published in the past and compiled it here, which means there isn’t really an author or voice. It’s very traditional, old fashioned gardening advice that is rather outdated, like information about tilling and pesticides and how to kill all your caterpillars (which do in fact do some damage but also increase the nutritional content of vegetables they munch, feed the birds, and turn into butterflies, which modern sustainable gardening books all mention). It’s also absolutely packed with so much unnecessary information that it would have made me feel overwhelmed when I was a new gardener. I also disagreed with a lot of the advice, like not to start Swiss chard from seed (I find it ridiculously easy) and that nothing will grow in partial shade (some plants prone to bolting like spinach and herbs actually do better with afternoon shade, especially in the hottest months). It isn’t one I’d personally recommend, but it would make a good late winter library read if you are planning your veggies for the year.

I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.
