Unloved is about two unlikely characters that share a connection that most people never have. Ro and Freddy meet during the start of their freshmen year and never speak to each other again until they are forced to work together their senior year. Freddy has some learning issues and is struggling with some of his classes. Ro is asigned to be his tutor. When they meet again. Ro is in on/off again relationship with Freddy's former tutor. A long the way, Freddy and Ro fall for each other and realize that they both have faced some rough times during their lives. I loved the ending of the story and the epilogue.
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for a review.
I loved Unsteady, so I was so thrilled to get an ARC for the sequel! I DEVOURED this book in one sitting. Freddy and Ro felt like your typical college kids, but there was so much underneath the surface that I worried the whole time I was reading how they would work it out and come together. I loved the interspersing of Rhys and Sadie's story throughout as well, and getting to see them from another angle. I would never have guessed the turmoil for Freddy or Sadie while reading Unsteady.
This book was delightful but it was also hard to read since so much of Freddy and Ro struggle with loneliness and feeling less than their peers. I wish there had been some mention of therapy rather than them seeming to "save" each other, but overall it was a great read and I'm looking forward to whoever gets their story next.
Matt “Freddy” Fredderic is all smiles—at least on the surface. On the ice, he’s the star left winger for the Waterfell Wolves with a stellar reputation in bed and a potential future in the NHL. But in the classroom, he’s barely scraping by on a 2.0 GPA, retaking failed classes and struggling with a rough mix of dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. Now tied to an NHL contract upon graduation, Freddy needs help to pass biology with a professor he has a tumultuous past with.
Ro Shariff is a hopeless romantic with terrible luck in love—and now, Freddy’s newly assigned tutor. Trying to convince herself that she’s very happy with her on again/off again boyfriend, Ro is desperate for real affection. As her tutoring sessions with Freddy lead to late-night phone calls and a deep understanding of each other’s hidden pains, a real friendship strikes up between them.
And, inevitably, a wistful secret pining hidden by them both. Ro can’t stop thinking about her first kiss her freshman year with Freddy—a spine-tingling moment that Freddy doesn’t seem to remember. Meanwhile, Freddy can’t let go of Ro’s drunken heartfelt confessions from the night she doesn’t remember.
While Freddy is determined to protect Ro from his reputation and prove to her how worthy of love she is, Ro wants to show Freddy that despite what others have led him to believe, he’s worth more than just his body. Together, with gentle affection and true admiration, they will show each other how easy it is to love the right person, no matter their flaws.
This book! This emotional, slow burn, friends to lovers book is EVERYTHING! Unloved is the second book in Peyton Corrine's Undone series and follows Matt (Freddy) Frederic and Rosalie (Ro) Shariff two of the kindest, sweetest souls I have seen. Both characters have been hurt by events and people in their pasts but neither one let's any of those things turn them bitter or hard. I was here for the soft sweet love in this story as Freddy and Ro give each other the gentle care the other needs.
This is a true slow burn friends to lovers story. I loved the growth of both Ro and Freddy as they blossomed under the love and respect they had for one another. This character driven story gave me all the feels!!
I loved seeing some events from Unsteady through different eyes. Also loved the glimpses we got of Bennett and Torren. I cannot wait for their books.
If you are looking for an emotional love story with two characters who absolutely deserve their HEA Unloved is definitely a romance for you. All the stars!!
Thank you to Atria and Netgalley for the ARC. This is my honest review.
I had the absolute honour of receiving this ARC yesterday, and I devoured it! A hockey romance with the found family trope as part of an interconnected standalone series is exactly what I needed!
The story follows Matt "Freddy" Fedderic, the star left winger for the Waterfall Wolves, known around campus as quite the ladies' man. His goal is to make it to the NHL, but he can’t do that without graduating. Unfortunately, he’s struggling with his classes due to ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, so he needs some additional support. Enter Ro Shariff, Sadie’s best friend from Unsteady who’s a hopeless romantic with a not-so-great love life. Now, Ro’s set to be Freddy’s new tutor—an interesting twist, especially since Freddy’s been her crush since freshman year, after he gave her her very first kiss at a party.
The build-up to their relationship is one of the best I’ve ever read. The slow transition from strangers, to tutor-student, to friends who are fiercely protective of each other, to lovers—it had me squealing! Plus, the reformed playboy trope has always been one of my favourites.
Ro’s been in a complicated, on-again, off-again relationship with Tyler, who’s left her feeling like she’s never quite enough, leading to her own struggles with self-esteem. Watching Freddy support her, even before they were officially together, was so touching. Freddy himself is dealing with a lot—after a betrayal by his professor while grieving, he’s felt defined only by his worth in bed or on the ice, and he’s come to believe he’s “dumb.” Watching him play into this act, shutting down or flirting to hide his true self, was gut-wrenching. All I wanted was to give him the biggest hug.
Both Ro and Freddy struggle with deep-seated self-esteem issues, feeling unworthy in their own ways. It broke my heart but brought me so much peace to see them find each other and become whole together.
The book dives deeply into themes of grief, and it brought me to tears more than once. I didn’t expect it to be so deep, but the way the author handles such sensitive topics with care and attention is what makes it such a beautifully written story.
Without a doubt, this is one of the best books I’ve read this year. It’s absolutely stunning, and I highly recommend it. I’ve barely scratched the surface with this review, but trust me—the book itself is SO MUCH BETTER!
Thank you to NetGalley, Atria Books and Simon and Schuster for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
It was so easy to fall in love with Freddy and Ro; I think I had before I even began Unloved, having found myself smitten with Rhys and Sadie’s found family in Unsteady.
Gentle, tender, patient love is so much more of a challenge to write than big, bold, lovebombing, yet Peyton Corinne does so as much through the characters’ restraint as through their actions. As with Unsteady, these characters built a safe space for one another to face their demons, their self-doubt, their shame and feelings of ineptitude. It was beautiful to read and left me with a desire to be as gentle as Freddy and Ro, tender and patient in my friendships and relationship.
To say I devoured this book is an understatement. To say I am waiting with bated breath for the next in the series goes without saying. A part of me healed alongside Freddy and Ro, just as it did with Rhys and Sadie. I simply cannot wait to see how Bennett’s story changes me for the better.
I was thrilled to get my hands on Unloved! I was drawn to Ro and Freddy in Unsteady and man did this book deliver. When we meet Ro, she is struggling emotionally within an emotionally on again/off again abusive relationship . She is learning to accept herself and standup to the mistreatment surrounding her in the academic setting. When we meet Freddy, we come to see the light hearted playboy is masking heavy grief and insecurities around multiple learning disabilities. Ro becomes his tutor and their story unfolds as they navigate through their past and present so they can build the future they each dream of creating.
This book really surprised me! College romance can be a bit of a mixed bag. A sports college romance on top of that, but I fell in love with this book. I devoured this book. Ro and Matthew’s (aka Freddy) first meeting their freshman year is so electric, I felt like I was at the party. They share a kiss that Ro never forgets. She doesn’t run into Freddy again until their senior year where she is tasked with tutoring him in biology. Freddy is a well know playboy hockey player, hitting on at least two different girls on his way across the library to meet her as his tutor for the first time. The two are thrust together and must deal with their own secrets and their feelings for each other.
What I really liked about this book is both Ro and Freddy had outside side issues that didn’t have anything to do with the other and it really helped build their character outside the romance. Ro has been dating Tyler for years. Tyler keeps cheating on Ro and stringing her along. Ro keeps taking Tyler back. This affects how Ro approaches her feelings with Freddy and how confident Ro feels about herself. Freddy’s side issues is that his coach is pushing in to join the NHL early since he already had a team pick him up and then he doesn’t have to worry about passing biology. Freddy refused as he has his own reason he must pass and secrets on why he’s struggling to do so. I also liked Freddy’s relationship with his hockey teammates. I hope we get Bennett’s book next!
What I also like about this book is Ro is “not like other girls” but not in an annoying way. She is the opposite of her roommate who later become her best friend, Sadie. Sadie is a confident, sexual charged bombshell. Ro is a shy, curly hair, top student. In the 3rd chapter Ro is wearing “ White pleated tennis skirt and a lavender short sleeve, a matching bow” that she states are Exactly her. That sounds like an outfit I would wear. It’s not like she overly frumpy or something crazy like that. Tyler just made her feel bad about how she likes to dress.
This book is a slllooooowwwwww burn and that might not be for some people. However I really enjoyed it because I prefer romance over spice and Ro and Freddy don’t even kiss again until almost 80 percent into the book.
Thank you to NetGalley, Atria books and Peyton Corrine for this ARC. It was very enjoyed. This book was a must read and I am off to get the first book in this series called Unsteady that tells Sadie and Rhys!!!
I could not put this book down! I might be a sucker for a sad misunderstood playboy but I adored Matt. He was endlessly sweet and considerate of others and Ro was endlessly in his corner. This book and series has easily become a top favorite of mine. I found myself smiling and so deeply sad for this poor couple as they tried to show who they truly were after being so emotionally beaten down. It was beautiful and very very recommended.
Thank you so much author Peyton Corinne, NetGalley, & Publishing for giving me the beautiful opportunity to read an ARC of your new upcoming
Hockey romance novel💚🏒🎀📚🦋✨

Corinne Payton’s "Unloved" presents a poignant exploration of loneliness and the quest for connection, though it occasionally falls short in its execution. While Payton's writing is undeniably heartfelt and her characters relatable, some moments feel overly sentimental, which can dilute the impact of their struggles.
The narrative, while ambitious in tackling complex themes, sometimes veers into clichés, making certain plot points predictable. Additionally, a deeper exploration of the secondary characters could have enriched the story, providing a fuller understanding of the protagonist’s journey.
Despite these criticisms, "Unloved" succeeds in sparking important conversations about self-acceptance and the need for community. Payton's ability to evoke empathy is commendable, and her message resonates strongly. Overall, while the book may have its flaws, it still offers valuable insights and a heartfelt reading experience.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. 3,5 stars.
thank you @ net galley for this ARC and @ peyton corinne for this book 😭🫶🏻 it was everything and more than i wanted and i am SO excited for the next books. if i don’t see bennett and paloma soon i will vomit
Not often do I find a second book better than an authors debut novel but Unloved did that. The emotional depth of these mcs is amazing to read. This is a SLOW burn but most of this book is establishing their friendship and I love that
The timeline matches Unsteady which let's us see everything that was happening with Freddy and Ro during Rhys and Sadie's story. Seeing everything about their interactions that we didn't see in Unsteady added so much.
Ro's emotions make her such a relatable character. (It broke my heart to see her unsure of the love that Sadie has for her). The way Freddy views himself in comparison to how he has been presented previously makes you just want to give him a hug. Freddy and Ro have some of the best emotional development I've read. These two help eachother grow so much.
I can't wait to see what comes next from Peyton Corinne (hopefully Bennet's book?)
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the ARC of Unloved by Peyton Corrine.
I have to say, I’m a little shocked by the sheer number of 5 star reviews for this book.
I wanted to love it so much and I was absolutely hooked for the first 50 pages but it feels like something shifted after that. The writing became more disconnected and the length of the story became too much. I’m all about a good slow burn but my god, it took so long for these characters to even kiss that it felt like I was going in circles.
I totally understand the importance of flawed characters, but Ro and Freddy felt too unrealistic.
To start, Ro was just way too critical of herself. I get abusive relationships hold power over you and it’s hard to let go, but she would walk away and then go back over the most innocuous things, all while talking about how poorly he treated her and how she didn’t want to be with him. Given that Tyler gave her so many outs and she was half out the door by the time the story started, her waffling just seemed infuriating. Even Freddy was tired of it.
And don’t get me started on Freddy. I totally understand the confident hockey superstar who secretly hates himself but he was a walking contradiction. He would put on the confident persona and then secretly act so shy he had no idea what was going on.
I just felt like both of these characters were too extreme for the story itself and it really took me out of the moment - they were a little too childish for 20 something year olds.
And the length - my god, the length. It felt like with a book that was almost 400 pages, more depth should have been there, but events that should have been described in detail or backstory that should have been built up was missing. She missed a good opportunity to flashback more to important events that defined these characters to the core.
I feel like this story has so much potential but it just didn’t live up to what I hoped it would be. I haven’t ready unsteady and I’m still willing to check it out, but I’m not afraid to DNF if it reads the same way this story does.
Despite being a hockey romance, there is shockingly little hockey. If you’re looking for something more, check out Elle Kennedy - she’s the queen of hockey/ romance/ spice.
This is the second installment in The Undone Series by Peyton Corrine. It's a friends to lovers, slowburn journey and the couple doesn't get together up until the 70% mark or so. There's OW/OM drama too. Both characters had their own emotional struggles and I loved how the book was focused on their grief and healing journey. Freddy's character was easy to sympathise with but I couldn't help but feel a pang of annoyance towards Ro. She's a pushover and I hate that she never fought back earlier. But like I said, both characters have their own mental health issues so I guess it's understandable why she might act that way.
Going into this book I was expecting an emotional rollercoaster, but I didn't realize it would be like this! This book touched on so many emotional aspects such as grief, abuse, and the aspect of moving past all of that in order to find love.
Our two main characters, Ro and Matt, both have different traumas. It is these traumas that help them bond and eventually learn to fall in love. The baseline for both of their traumas is fear of being hurt. Ro's trauma comes from her past abusive relationship. She was in the relationship for way too long and kept on giving him more chances because she thought she was in love. Tyler though was just the actual worst. Never have a I hated a character more. I had literally no redeeming qualities and I wanted to reach my hand through the pages and throttle him for the way he treated Ro. It was Matt's strength and encouragement that made Ro gain the courage to officially end things with Matt and take the steps to make her life better, including with her academics.
Matt is much more complex. In the first book he seemed to be just a happy-go-lucky guy. He is known as the "playboy" on campus. Right away though we see that there is so much more that meets the eye. Matt does not think he is lovable, and that the only person who truly loved him was his mother who is now gone. He feels that no one has been in his corner, so the playboy lifestyle is just to help curb his loneliness. It is not until Ro that he realizes that he is worthy of love, and that the way he was treated and abused in the past was not okay.
These two make each other stronger. They truly are a match made in heaven as the compliment each others weaknesses. Ro gives Matt the unconditional love that he deserves and Matt gives Ro the strength to be unapologetically herself.
While I loved this book, there were a few plot holes for me that I feel like could have been further addressed or acted on. For example, the spicy college list. Ro made sexy bucket list that she wanted to do in college. Matt found it and offered to do it with her, but she shut it down. After that, it was never brought up again. I feel like the list could have been a fun plot as well as a trust exercise for the two.
I was definitely expecting more spice considering Matt's reputation, but I think the fact that there were only a few scenes that did not really start until 80% in in almost better. By not centering the story around sex between Ro and Matt, it shows that their relationship is so much more than just physical.
Overall, I really loved this book. While it did have its flaws, it was overall a really great read!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Although I had come across this author before I never checked out her book and figured I would give this story a try. I was actually surprised they approved me because the title seems pretty popular. I’m so glad I for the approval because from the time I began reading this book I had a hard time putting the book down. I’m not usually into the hockey star romances but I might be after this one. With a solid female MC and a sweet love interest I couldn’t get enough of. Plus the well fleshed out side characters made it all feel realistic. Now I have to go track down a copy of Unsteady because I can’t get enough. This book is definitely a must read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc!
Wowowow this was so good. Unsteady was so good, and I was a little nervous this one might not live up to the precedent set, but holy shit I think Unloved might be even better somehow?
I want to protect Matt and Ro with my life, they are angels who just want to love and be loved. My heart was breaking for them the entire book. This was a slow burn, but when they finally get together it just makes it that much sweeter!
Be ready with tissues and water. I’m pretty sure I cried myself to dehydration while reading.
Thank you Peyton Corinne and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest opinion!
This book was an absolute Masterpiece. Peyton is an expert at her craft and wrote a book that made me feel so deeply.
Freddie and Ro were characters that I just wanted to wrap in bubble wrap and keep safe forever, but getting their story was exactly what I never knew I needed.
Both these characters got to learn to feel safe with each other and their journey is not unlike one I, and many people have faced in the past. Freddie had someone to advocate for him and someone who knew what he was capable of, and how to help him get there, and I loved seeing that side of their relationship. Ro was learning to lover herself and embrace the things and people she loved and Freddie was her biggest cheerleader and I absolutely loved it.
These characters’ emotions felt so raw and real, it felt like I was sitting next to them watching them live their lives. The pacing of the story was perfect and allowed for us to really see the drastic character development, and stories written like this are the number one reason character driven stories are my absolute favorite. I loved how much ending we got, we got about 15% of them just living their lives happily and navigating everything and I absolutely loved that. A lot of books end once they get their happily ever after, but this story went a little beyond that to show us what kind of life they built together and I thought that was done perfectly. Peyton Corinne is 100% an auto-buy author from now on and I can’t wait to see what else she does with these Hockey boys
Peyton Corinne has officially joined the ranks of my forever favorite romance authors with this second release. She always writes the most deeply emotional, romantic, and transformative stories that handle really heavy topics with the utmost care and compassion. If you've been through the same struggles as her characters, you feel incredibly seen and heard and may even learn how to heal and process alongside them (I know I did with Freddy's experience with grief!). If you haven't been through the same struggles as her characters, you are able to empathize with them and learn more about an experience you might not understand super well.
Freddy and Ro's characterization was extremely vivid to me as a reader. I felt like I knew these characters in real life and could understand every single motivation and the choices they made. While they fit into some great common tropes, they stood out as individuals and I feel like they will stay with me for a very long time after finishing their book.
I cannot recommend this series enough and I will forever love it. I just finished Unloved, but I am already itching for a reread which is the sign of an amazing book in my opinion!!
Unloved is a breathtaking exploration of identity, vulnerability, and the intricate dance of human connection. Following the intertwined lives of Freddy and Ro, this book delves into the challenges of feeling unseen and the desperate longing to be enough in a world that often seems to measure worth by performance rather than depth.
Freddy, a charming yet profoundly insecure character, grapples with dyslexia and dyscalculia, which complicate his academic journey. He has long been the life of the party, the one people flock to for fun, but beneath that lighthearted exterior lies a deep-seated fear of not being enough. His story is a reminder of how easy it is to put on a mask, hiding our struggles behind a facade of joy. The reader feels his frustration and despair as he wrestles with his self-perception and the desire to be valued for more than just his social charisma.
Ro, on the other hand, is on her own tumultuous path, plagued by insecurities stemming from an unhealthy relationship. Her journey is one of self-discovery, as she learns to navigate the tumult of emotions that come with seeking validation. The dynamic between her and Freddy is electric, stemming from their shared history and the unresolved feelings that linger from their initial meeting in freshman year. As Ro steps into the role of Freddy's tutor, the intricate layers of their personalities unfold, revealing their strengths and scars in a beautifully raw manner.
What struck me most about Unloved was its ability to resonate deeply on an emotional level. The pervasive feeling of inadequacy, and the longing for genuine connection. I found myself bouncing between the perspectives of Freddy and Ro, feeling painfully seen in their struggles. It was almost eerie how accurately the narrative depicted my own experiences, making me confront my insecurities alongside them.
The humor interspersed throughout the narrative provides a necessary reprieve from the heavy themes, balancing the emotional weight with moments of lightness and shared laughter. And yes, there are spicy moments that elevate the chemistry between Freddy and Ro, reminding us that vulnerability can also open the doors to passion and intimacy.
By the time I reached the final pages, I was left with a surge of emotions. I had cried, laughed, and reflected so deeply that I felt almost transformed by their journeys. Unloved is not just a love story; it is an invitation to embrace our flaws, acknowledge our wounds, and cultivate the courage to be seen for who we truly are.
