Freddy is the goofy, happy womanizer at least that is what people see him as. He is a star on the ice and has a promising future in the NHL. Due to his dyslexia, dyscalculia and ADHD he is barely scrapping by in school but in order to gain his inheritance he must graduate and he needs help to do so. Ro is a romantic in a toxic relationship with her on and off boyfriend and desperate for real affection. She is now Freddy's tutor and their talks cause a friendship to grow. As feelings grow they are scared to cross that line because they both value their friendship so much.
I really enjoyed this book. I love Peyton Corinne's ability to portray mental health while showcasing a beautiful love story. I thought the take on loneliness and how it can effect people differently and showcase differently was expertly explored during this book. I loved seeing both the main characters become each others safe spot. I also loved the found family aspect of this book. I will continue to read any book in this series as long as Peyton Corinne keeps writing them.
★★★★☆ (4/5)
Plot and Pacing:
I really enjoyed the pacing of story for this book. As the description states. we see a glimpse of the past, where Ro and Matt share their first kiss. Then for the rest of the book, we navigate how they moved on separately from their first meeting. Ro is dealing with her maybe-boyfriend issues while also being assigned to tutor Matt, the star hockey player with dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. I felt like their romance was interwoven with their own personal problems really well. It felt natural and believable.
The romance was a good mix of slow, but fast? It's slow because they start off as friends and stay that way for a large portion of book. And "fast" because they flirt constantly, like from the beginning. Its very clear that they both has feelings for each other.
Characters:
Rosalie "Ro" is the protagonist of the story. Excelling in the academic aspect of her life, she is struggling with the romantic aspect. While I couldn't totally relate to her--which is completely fine--I found myself empathizing with her at times, and anyone else that struggles with an abusive partner. I could, however, relate to her hopeless romantic tendencies and that made it easier for me to understand why she would have a hard time letting go off a toxic partner.
Matt "Freddy" is a great hockey player but failing in the academic portion of his college experience. He's the campus playboy and has a reputation for being great in bed. This was originally off-putting for me as I didn't love the idea of the MMC being flirtatious with multiple women. BUT Matt is far from that and only has eyes for Ro. If you love sunshine x sunshine pairings, this book definitely delivers on that!
Themes and Message:
The book delves into themes of loyalty, family, and not letting past trauma define who you are.
Final Thoughts:
It was a fun, romance-fill read with some emotional beats. Nothing that made me shed a tear, but I appreciated the dive into the character's past and traumas. I also loved how slow they took their relationship without actually being slow. Its a friends to lovers story with lots of pining, lusting and wholesome tender moments. There were some instances of miscommunication that I didn't love, but I'm used to from romance novels so it wasn't a big deal for me. Overall, I highly recommend if you love college sports romances!
Content Warning:
Sexual content, abusive exes, healing from grief
It was really great! The characters are so endearing, and they're really made for each other. You can really feel the depth of their characters, and how they complement each other. For this second book, the author has done a superb job.

MATTY & Rosalie
First thank you for the ARC. Secondly, I truly didn’t think I could love another book like I loved Unloved & I’ll be forever thankful to P.C. for writing another masterpiece!!!
I truly loved this book from the timeline, to the unrushed love that is created between these characters. Matt and Ro grow together in an unromantic aspects so when they do end up together you can see it lasting, you can see the soulmate tie.
There are so many beautiful quotes I highlighted of this book but I can't mention just yet just know I will add them once I can. My honest review is yes there were something missing aspects but I think we will get more details in more books in this series (pls I need more) because the timelines are interconnected with unsteady and you get some answers from unsteady in unloved. I wish we could've gotten more results on what happens to Carmen and Tyler but I'm hoping we get it resolved or some background on it later in the series. Yes they don't get together until 80% of the book but I think it really works well with the characters and I understand what Peyton Corinne was trying to achieve. Anyways I hope you give this book a chance and you love it just as much as I did.
Be still my heart! This book hit me in the feels so many times, and I can fiercely say that the characters in Unloved are so loved in their stories and in my reader heart. I thought Peyton Corinne had written some magic in Rhys and Sadie’s book, but in Matt and Ro’s book?! It was magic with a little something extra.
If you want a book that will make you cry, but then turn around and give you some of the sweetest content ever, I’d recommend this book in a heartbeat. I need more of these characters so bad! Matty and Rosalie have me so hooked on their slow burn romance that I quite literally want to start this book from the beginning so I can experience their blossoming friendship to forever love. Peyton Corinne has a hot on her hands folks.👏👏👏
I was truly moved by this book: to go through these emotions and the feeling of not wanting to put the book down. It helped me get out of my reading slump.
When I say this book was an emotional rollercoaster….
I went from being so heated to sobbing in 2.5 seconds.
I’ve never wanted to go jump in a book so fast and go to war for two fictional characters more than I did for this book. Ro is the sweetest soul, but man I was getting heated watching people walk all over her. I’m glad that Matty helped her find her backbone and she helped show him how loved he could be. His inner Turmoil made me so sad and the grief he was dealing with. I’m glad the both got their happy ending, but boy was it a ride. I’m definitely curious about Bennet and Torren Kane. I hope we get a few more in this series because I love it!
sad to report: this wasn’t for me. i had no connection with “unloved” - the plot, the characters, nothing. and i love found family, especially in sports romance novels, but this felt like a family that's never heard of communication. all matty’s teammates are holing up their emotions and the going-ons of their lives when they are following near identical paths, having girl problems on the same timeline! i very much disliked that and the secrets felt endless. now, was that intentional because each pairing will get their own screen time eventually? 110%, and i can deduce that from what is transpiring in this book. but it was still difficult to connect with them in any capacity.
what i did endlessly love was how their relationship developed; that was the only saving grace. it's sweet and true, and their coupling felt realistic. the tutoring into tentative friendship into more was the highlight. additionally, matty was easy to understand. you learn his background and you just want to hug him.
even so, their other idiosyncrasies drove me up a wall. the way ro constantly let tyler (her boyfriend, but not really, since they DID breakup) walk all over her into realizing her worth and then proceeding to let him mistreat her more was rage-inducing. the way matty gets no help or intervention with the professor situation and how unsettling that feels when there's no real closure and he stays in her class had me close to dnfing. their story was overall unfulfilling and i was hoping for more.
regardless, i’m crossing my fingers that book 3 will be with bennett or even toren and it’ll end up being worthwhile.
thank you to netgalley, atria books, and peyton corinne for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review!
I finished this in a day after not reading anything for a month. I think that’s a good testiment to how engaging the storyline was.
I loved how raw, real and true to herself Ro is and I of course loved Freddy’s accepting and understanding aura.
All in all this book was great but the writing was a little confusing in some parts. It could also just be a problem I share with Freddy.
This is my first book by the author and i would love to read more. I love cute sports romance with lots of emotional depth and this is one of them. The fmc tutors the mmc who has adhd and abd dyslexia and that is how they start spending time with each other. Both characters feel unlovable at times the mmc with his dad and the fmc with her abusive boyfriend. I wasn’t expecting the book to be so emotional and serious. I was expecting a fun little sports romcom and this was not that. Instead there is a lot of character depth and grief/healing.
The romance is a really slow burn and the characters did get to know each other with lots of tension and angst. There are spicy scenes as well which were steamy. Some parts were slow but overall this was a good read. Thanks to the publisher for this arc for an honest review!
Read for:
- Sports romance
- Depth of characters
- Complex characters
- Steamy scenes
- Slow burn
I loved this book! In Unsteady I already loved Ro's character ands wanted to see more of her. And Unloved made me love her even more. I loved how she finally stood up for herself to Tyler (who I hate), and seeing her blossom as a person. And the way that Freddy got her to open up and vice versa. Freddy being able to be open and honest with Ro was beautiful. Telling her things he hasn't told anyone. Opening up to his mental struggles. I loved everything about them individually. But them together was the best thing to happen. Everything about Freddy and Ro is a work of art.
This book was so cute. I was in a hockey romance slump and this book pulled me out of it. The story didn't feel rushed. I loved Freddy and Ro and how wholesome their friendship turned lovers story was.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED! Such a great second book. I was so excited to see that the author was writing a second book, and she did not disappoint!
Peyton Corinne’s Unloved is a captivating sports romance that delves into the world of hidden insecurities, learning disabilities, and the power of self-worth. Set against the backdrop of college pressures and the looming demands of professional sports, this story of unlikely connection between star hockey player Matt "Freddy" Fredderic and his tutor, Ro Shariff, is both tender and authentic.
Freddy is a refreshing and complex protagonist—on the ice, he’s a skilled and celebrated player, yet off the rink, he’s struggling academically due to his dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. His vulnerabilities are written with sensitivity and depth, making him feel real and endearing. Freddy’s journey with self-acceptance and his attempts to avoid his "bad boy" reputation are not only believable but also deeply affecting. He is someone who, despite his struggles, wants to prove his worth beyond his athletic abilities, and Corinne captures this internal conflict beautifully.
Ro, on the other hand, is a romantic at heart, but disillusioned by her past relationships. Her on-again, off-again relationship isn’t fulfilling her emotional needs, yet she’s not sure where else to turn. Ro’s connection with Freddy unfolds naturally, building from tutoring sessions to late-night calls and heartfelt confessions. Their chemistry is undeniable, but it’s the emotional intimacy that truly drives the story. Their bond shows the importance of feeling understood and supported, and it’s clear that they complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses in a way that’s heartwarming.
The novel’s structure, with past interactions weaving into their present relationship, adds an extra layer of nostalgia and longing. Freddy’s memory of their freshman kiss—paired with Ro’s poignant recollection of a forgotten confession—lends a bittersweet element to their relationship. It’s the perfect touch for two characters who are learning to believe in their own worth and recognize the impact they have on each other.
Unloved tackles heavy themes like learning disabilities, self-doubt, and the complexities of modern love, all while maintaining a sweet, slow-burn romance. The story speaks to anyone who has ever felt overlooked or underestimated and reminds readers that genuine affection and acceptance can help heal even the deepest insecurities. Corinne’s deft storytelling and heartfelt characters make this book hard to put down. Unloved is perfect for readers who love a romance that’s both steamy and deeply emotional, with characters who are as flawed as they are lovable.
I love hockey, and I love romance, and I love hockey romance. And I loved Unsteady by Peyton Corrnne so I was so excited to read Unloved, the sequel/spin-off to Unsteady. I was not disappointed! Unsteady and Unloved are happening simultaneously to each other.
In Unloved we follow, Freddy who has dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD and has seen a bunch of tutors because of it. None of the tutors last for very long. This time his tutor is Ro. Freddy is also a hockey player at their college and determined to graduate before crossing over to the NHL.
Ro is in a toxic, on/off relationship with a guy who was one of Freddy's previous tutors. As Ro and Freddy start spending more time together, the two develop a close bond. It's not so simple for them to get together though.
I loved this book. I can't wait to read the next one that Peyton Corinne writes.
Wow! I enjoyed Unsteady, but Unloved blew me away! I loved Ro and Freddy’s story so much. I enjoyed seeing their past and struggles and coming together to truly know what love is. This book talks about important topics of self worth and dealing with grief, and I loved every moment of it. It was great seeing Sadie and Rhys from a different perspective and got to see their friendships as well. I hope the series continues and I get to see Bennet’s story as well as Kane’s!
“I think you’d be really easy to love”
“I think loving you would be the greatest thing in my life.”
I love Ro and Freddy. Their relationship develops from tutor and student, to friends to more. This is a slow burn that is so worth the fall. Their deep friendship is rooted in their fierce protection of each other. I found my self crying more than once. My heart broke for the their traumas and I loved Freddy’s vulnerability wit Ro. It is refreshing to see a MMC show his emotions. And the representation of learning differences is handled so well.
This book runs n a parallel time line to Unsteady and while they are technically stand-alone,, I think it is a richer story if you read them in order.
“I’VE FALLEN AND I CAN’T GET UP” -Me, during about half of this dang book.
Freddy is everything to me. He just wants to be LOVED and I CANNOT STAND THE FOOLS WHO MADE HIM FEEL UNLOVABLE. This right here is the type of playboy character arc I’m obsessed with. I just wanna wrap up the damaged party boy and make it all better.
This story was swoony and the slow burn was so delicious. Ro’s journey from being a doormat to coming into herself and her confidence was raw and real. My only complaint is that there was something that felt incomplete about Freddy’s friendship arc with Rhys and Bennett. Freddy starts off the story lonely and sad that he’s basically a third wheel for the guys, and the three of them never have a conversation about how to be better friends to each other. That’s the only thing that was missing for me.
Ok so Ro and Freddy are stars - stars I say!! - and yet, the highlights here for me (as they were in Unsteady also) are the Toren Kane CRUMBS. Siri, play “Vigilante Shit” because I’m getting Batman vibes from this particular bad boy. Like can he really be all that bad if *he’s* the one who ordered Freddy to fix what he messed up with Ro?? I mean, the man has Van Gogh tattoos, for god’s sake. And PLEASE don’t get me started on how I was absolutely YODELING when he showed up to the Halloween party in a Ghostface mask. I’m sitting here begging god (and Peyton Corinne) for more Toren Kane. And I swear, if the next book is Bennett and Paloma before I get the full Toren Kane scoop, I’m going to launch myself into the sun. And that’s the gospel truth.
I love everything this author writes!! This book was no different. Perfect pacing and the storyline was soooo good! Thanks for the ARC!
4.5 stars
Ro and Freddy are both the absolute sweetest and deserve nothing but good things. This book was such a good mix of sweet, fun moments and some more serious ones. Ro and Freddy had such a great acquaintances to friends to lovers story and every time they were together I was giggling and kicking my feet. I absolutely loved how sweet Freddy was with Ro and how he was always looking out for her and going out of his way to help her and make her happy. Even with everything else he had going on in his life he always put her first. Ro saw right through his cool, playboy persona and always showed him that she cared and that he deserved love.
Both of these characters had a lot of things from their past that they needed to work through and it was really sweet to see them work through those things together and to constantly show up for each other. They had such a strong relationship and even before they were dating the love between them was so easy to see.
This book also takes place at the same time as Unsteady, so if you loved that book and want more of Sadie and Rhys you'll definitely love this one.
This was such a good friends to lovers, sunshine x sunshine, college romance and I highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria for the ARC!!
