Returning to the world of Immortal, I had high expectations given how much I loved VE Duncan’s first book in the series—and Hunting Grounds did not disappoint. This sequel delivered everything I wanted and more: deeper science, richer world-building, and strong connections to the first novel while still standing solidly on its own.
I actually enjoyed Hunting Grounds even more than Immortal. It builds beautifully on the foundation laid in the first book, expanding a world that’s fascinatingly complex. The scientific details are engaging, and the fresh take on immortality and the parasitic element is captivating. In my review of Immortal, I mentioned wanting more from this world, and Duncan delivered on every page.
The characters, Simon and Loria, truly come to life here. I had a sense in Immortal that their story had more to give, and I was thrilled to see it unfold. Their chemistry is compelling, with just the right amount of slow-burn tension that makes their eventual connection incredibly satisfying.
Loria is a powerhouse character—driven, passionate, and easy to root for despite the obstacles she faces. Her evolving perspectives, especially regarding the Center and Simon, feel authentic and earned as the plot progresses.
Then there’s Simon, who I adored. He’s a gentle soul with a strong heart, though he’s not to be underestimated. I was thrilled to see more of him in Hunting Grounds; he was a favourite of mine from Immortal.
Duncan’s pacing is impeccable. The story unfolds at just the right rhythm, answering questions while skillfully planting seeds for the future. Sign me up for the next book in the series please and thank you.
Overall, this is a deeply satisfying read with a compelling plot and wonderfully developed characters. I highly recommend it.
This definitely was OK, it was a lot to put into one book. However, it also tended to drag and rant on at some points causing my eyes to glaze over. Overall, it could use some cleaning up or the author could use some focusing.
The second installment was just as good as the first. Such a unique plotline and fantastic character arcs.
This book is so engaging from beginning to end. I absolutely adored Loria and Simon. I wasn't sure their story could compete with Kait and Jackson, but they can and they did
This was a great continuation of the first book. It felt like the Author was in her groove. The writing felt more polished. The pacing, I thought, was better. I felt better connected to the characters. I had all the feels.
I enjoyed the first book in the series but it left so many questions unanswered. I had to read the second book to get appease my curiosity.
The plot didn't grab my attention like the first book did. I had a hard time staying engaged in the story. And after I finished the book, there were more things still unresolved from the first book along with the second.
The author is obviously talented. I can tell while reading how thoughtful and purposeful the author penned the novel. The pages just didn't resonate with me as they did in the first book.
I admit, it could be me. I'm an emotional reader and I could have been too up in my feelings to make a connection.
However, this will not stop me from reading this author in the future.
