I love a good holiday romance and am especially fond of collections like this one that feature some of my favourite authors AND expose me to some new ones. I read each short story between longer, heavier reads and got a much needed injection of Christmas spirit. A great book to add to your holiday TBR! I’m giving UNDER THE MISTLETOE the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval. Enjoy!

Under the Mistletoe is a collection of holiday short stories from some of the most popular romance writers. Each story has twists and turns, making you smile and sigh sweetly when you are rewarded with a happily ever after. That being said, All by My Elf by Olivia Dade was an absolute standout for creativity, so this review is focused on that story.

Nina and William are underpaid, adjunct professors at the same university where winter break is no break at all: It is the time of the year they try to make extra money by selling mincemeat pies in a repurposed weinermobile, except their side job for the holidays gets them caught out in a blinding blizzard in the middle of nowhere, They have nothing to entertain themselves, but each other. So, they cuddle for warmth and play Never Have I Ever to pass the time. Playing a game about secrets means that some secrets come out into the open.

Under The Mistletoe is a spicy, sweet, seasonal short story collection that are easy additions to any festive TBR. Although this wasn’t my favourite short story collection, I still found the stories, for the most part, to be quite a fun time. If you’re looking for something short, sweet, and a little spicy to add to your TBR, I think these are worth looking into. They all have their merits and I think there’s a little something for everyone. Will I ever read these again? Unfortunately I don’t think I would. These were very quick reads, but unfortunately were not the most memorable. I’m sad to report that I am now officially all Chrismassed out after reading this collection (and it isn’t even December yet 😂😅)

Here are my brief thoughts on each story:

♡ Cruel Winter With You by Ali Hazelwood - 3.75☆
This was one of my favourites in the collection. Classic Ali Hazelwood at its core; delivering just the amount of spice, backstory, and tension to keep me entertained. This is the perfect addition to your TBR if you’re looking for a best friend’s brother, second chance romance.

♡ Merry Ever After by Tessa Bailey - 2☆
Unfortunately this was my least favourite in the collection. I find Tessa’s writing to be very hit or miss for me and this was just a huge miss. The characters relationship developed way too quickly (even for a short story imo) and I weirdly found the story off putting (but I can’t put my finger on why). If you’re looking to read about a Texan Christmas, love the single parent trope, and want a dual POV short story (this is the only one in the collection that is dual POV), this one’s for you!

♡ All By My Elf by Olivia Dade - 3☆
This felt like the shortest story in the collection. There was very little story progression and lots of mention of naked genitalia. This was not that memorable tbh but I remember enjoyed myself while I read it. Perfect if you’re looking for a forced proximity romance where the MCs are colleagues.

♡ Merriment and Mayhem by Alexandria Bellefleur - 3.5☆
This was a fun time! This was the first firefighter romance I’d ever read and I found it comical that the FMC was a damsel in distress who kept requiring the fire stations help. The love story was a little Insta-love, but even then I still found it enjoyable. This is genuinely a great taster if you want to try this author. I’ll definitely be reading more from them!

♡ Only Santa’s in the Building by Alexis Daria - 3.75☆
In my opinion, this felt like a Christmas hallmark movie if it had spice. Very enjoyable little neighbours to lovers moment. I felt like the characters had their moment to shine and I actually felt invested in the story. One of my top reads in the collection.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the complimentary e-arc in exchange for an honest review. All opinions in this review are my own.

Average rating, combining all ratings: 4.75

Cruel Winter With You by Ali Hazelwood: 5 stars

This was so fucking cute I can’t. It also packed a punch which says a lot about what a great writer, in my opinion, Ali is.

Them knowing each other their whole lives and getting to read about the flashbacks and how Marc’s love for Jamie sort of evolved was stunning. It was fun.

I wish we would’ve gotten to see more of them, and I would love any extended epilogues or anything like that for them, but I’m glad we got what we got.

I’m forever going to be curious about the sister who’s name I’m forgetting at the moment and how she will take everything, but also know that she will probably take it in stride as she was the one who told Jamie in the first place.

So many cute quotes in here. So many down bad quotes in here. So many funny quotes in here. Truly can’t wait to read the rest of the stories if they are anything like Ali’s.

I loved the forced proximity so bad!!!!! It just hits every time and I eat it up.

Truly such a remarkable fluffy adorable steamy cute read!! Ali Hazelwood, you’re an icon and I love you for this. (Do you ever stop writing??? Go you FR)

Merry Ever After by Tessa Bailey: 3.75 stars

I think this would be better if she didn’t talk about how big and large the MMC is. This feels very hetero and I’m reminded of how sometimes straight romances make me sick.

I can’t take Daddy serious in any context, even though it was kind of said ironically.

I did enjoy some aspects, such as the dad in him and the smut was good I suppose. It kind of made me laugh sometimes, but it was really filled with lots of tension and se*ual chemistry that you can tell they had with one another.

The little moments/sweet moments were cute as well. The gifts that they gave one another were just so cute, I found myself saying “awwww” out loud.

This is one of those books where it’s sort of a hit or miss, and for me it was a hit with a couple misses. Or a miss with a couple hits. Good, but not my favorite.

As someone who loves insta-love stories, this was just way quick. I just wouldn’t be able to give someone my all, and allow them around my child if I’ve only known them for such a short time.

All By My Elf by Olivia Dade: 5 stars

This was such a cute Christmas romance short story!!!!

When we essentially get a snowed in story of two colleagues, but instead they are basically in a Weenie Mobile, and it was just everything.

The harboring crush, the spice, the friendships. Chefs kiss!!!!

I loved how sweet the romance was on top of the spicy scene. I found it to be really endearing and I enjoyed the humor in this as well.

I liked Claudia’s role in this and her at the ending because she was so funny for that really. So iconic of her.

I will definitely be reading more from Olivia Dade, as her writing is easily digestible and interesting/snappy.

Easily five stars.

Merriment And Mayhem by Alexandria Bellefleur: 5 stars

OH MY GOD!!!! I JUST FOUND MY NEW FAVORITE FIREFIGHTER ROMANCE AND I NEED MORE RECS!!!!

This was just—so perfect. The Christmas lonely vibes paired with the first responder, firefighter coming to the rescue on top of the friendships and side characters in this??? Too good.

The romance between the main characters was so witty and spicy and I think that they were fun together.

Goofy is a word I’d use to describe Griffin, the MMC and love interest. He was so funny, and quick with his banter/humor as well. Love to see it.

I also really loved the FMC (Trouble) hehe. She was really refreshing and sort of had a black cat, loner vibe to her that I connected with.

I’m glad she had neighbors that were there to call 911 when certain things were happening. This sort of reminded me of 9-1-1/Greys Anatomy/Station 19!!!

The names. The water scene (I swear there was a S19 episode like that) and some other aspects. I loved it!!!!!

Definitely going to be looking to read more works from this author. 5 stars!!

Only Santas In The Building by Alexis Daria: 4.9 stars

Oh my god, this was such a wonderful short story to end this beautiful collection, I cannot.

I CRIED over this one y’all!!!!! So good!!!!!!

While this one was also a spicy romantic story set in Christmas times, it also had a strong overtone of grief and talked about grief in it which made the story just that much better.

The dedication was also really heartfelt and I knew it was going to be a story that was going to be near to my heart.

Evie was so real, I adored her. The messy hair no showering while on deadline was so funny of her. It’s something I’ve heard of from authors IRL so for a comic book illustrator to be the same in a book just made me giggle.

I loved the references in this as well. This may have been the funniest one out of all of these novellas, Evies head is just such a funny place to be in.

The caretaking of the MMC, Theo, was top notch. I liked the little things he did for her and the fact that he had a cat.

This one would have been my favorite in this whole thing, if the word “sp00k” had not been used. I recently learned that it’s a slur that was used against Black people and have taken it out of my vocabulary, so to see it in a book that is recently published was just disappointing, but I understand not everyone may not know about the origins of the word.

This collection of holiday novellas was just the type of quick read that makes everyone happy. It has at least one of the stories that can fit for anyone to enjoy. I am excited for everyone to get a chance at reading or listening to these ones as the holiday season starts around us.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE is the latest Amazon original stories collection, featuring some heavy hitters in the field: Ali Hazelwood, Tessa Bailey, Olivia Dade, Alexandria Bellefleur, and Alexis Daria.

The stories are quick and fun, ranging to best friend's brother to coworkers in a repurposed Weinermobile (only one bun??). Definitely the spiciest of their romance collections. Some of them work better as short stories than others, but they're all a good time. Not a bad option if you're having trouble focusing for any totally understandable reason.

3.75/5 Cruel Winter with You
This is definitely something that would be way better as a full length novel because it hits on heavy themes, but overall it was heartwarming. The flashbacks added depth to Marc's character, but unfortunately Jamie's growth felt lacking. However, the tropes were troping! I enjoyed that they were able to kind of "hash it out" being snowed in for the night, but for how short it was, there was still a third act miscommunication which I did not appreciate. And it seemed the smut was just thrown in there for the sake of having spice; it was fantastic, just felt out of place/forced.

3/5 Merry Ever After
This is classic Tessa Bailey--heavy on the steamy scenes. I actually didn't mind the insta-love, but the single mom aspect was so unbelievable. She trusted Luke way too easily for someone in the position they are in. It's giving Juniper Hill vibes. It was okay; my favorite part is the MMC being obsessed with the FMC.

2/5 All by my Elf
This was my least favorite of the collection. I think Olivia Dade's writing is not for me. It sounds a bit juvenile and even extremely predictable, not in a good way. There was no chemistry between the MCs and the most interesting part of this novella was the hotdog vehicle.

4/5 Merriment and Mayhem
I am a grandma girlie through and through so this was already a winner for me just because of that. The chemistry and banter between the MCs were the best one so far in the entire collection. Everleigh and Griffin were the perfect balance of cute and sexy. This one also actually felt Holiday themed. This was very fun and exactly what I was looking for in this collection.

4/5 Only Santas in the Building
This was probably my favorite in the collection because even though it was very short, the author was able to introduce an entire cast of people within an apartment building. I love the community and the meddling and the secrecy in this novella. It was such a sweet "secret admirer" vibe but ended with a bang, literally ;). I would definitely read a full length book of these character. They felt real and genuine.

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the eArc. All opinions are my own.

It’s a little tricky to rate a short story collection with multiple authors, but on the whole this was a lot of fun!

Cruel Winter with You by Ali Hazelwood: 4 stars

This was adorable! I loved the connection between Jamie and Marc. Even the miscommunication trope, which is normally a no-go for me, was well done. The cozy snowed-in setting was just the cherry on top of a perfect little Christmas romance.

Merry Ever After by Tessa Bailey: 1 star

So, so bad. This was so bad it felt like it was intentional. I wavered between 1-2 stars but there honestly was nothing redeeming about this novella. The dialogue and internal monologue were cringeworthy and the insta-love made absolutely no sense. The nail in the coffin for me was the blatant child safety issues. What is this, 1970?? WHO PUTS A 5 MONTH OLD ON A STRANGER’S BED FOR A NAP AND LEAVES THE ROOM?!?

All by my Elf by Olivia Dade: 3 stars

This one was a little confusing and awkward at times. I really didn’t like the miscommunication/misunderstanding piece. There were some cute moments, though! And it was definitely unique!

Merriment and Mayhem by Alexandria Bellefleur: 4 stars

I enjoyed this one! Quick and cute. Firefighter romances are always a little cheesy to me, but this was cheesy in a sweet way. I could have read this as a full-length book.

Only Santas in the Building by Alexis Daria

INFINITY STARS

Only Santas in the Building is my favorite story of this collection! What a high note to end on. Evie and Theo were absolute perfection. I flew through this story in record time and loved every single detail.

“You are a fucking delight, Evie Cruz. Where have you been all my life?”

I read the stories by Olivia Dade and Alexis Daria. Olivia Dade is a forever fave and her novellete that featured finding love in a re-purposed weiner mobile was exactly her brand of humor and unseriousness. I decided to give Alexis Daria a second chance after her audio book "what the hex" was a DNF for me and I was pleasantly surprised by the short sweet neighbors to lovers romp. I'll be sure to take another look at her full length novels.

Thank you to Amazon and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy of this collection. These opinions are my own.

This is a steamy collection of Christmas novellas.

Cruel Winter with You - Ali Hazelwood
The longest of the collection, this novella showed Jamie's interest in her best friend's brother who has become a billionaire. I appreciated how long they had known each other. The present went incredibly quickly with a single night, but flashbacks to their past helped add more depth. I enjoyed it, but still wanted a bit more in the present to show their connection.

Merry Ever After - Tessa Bailey
This is signature Tessa Bailey in novella form. It's heavy on steamy scenes. Evie moves to a small town with her baby and meets the Texas farmer Luke. I would have enjoyed a bit more character development given the length of time it covered, but I really appreciated the inclusion of an epilogue.

All By My Elf - Olivia Dade
This novella features two adjunct professors traveling in a repurposed hot dog truck. It includes a number of crude jokes about the truck decorations. The best part was a game to get to know each other.

Merriment and Mayhem - Alexandria Bellefleur
This was my favorite of the group. It's funny, a true rom com and a good fit for the novella length. Everleigh is a disaster prone woman who keeps meeting Griffin when he comes out on 911 calls. I really liked both of them and smiled throughout my read.

Only Santas in the Building - Alexis Daria
This was another great novella with sweet characters. There's a whole building filled with interesting people. And Evie wonders which of them is gifting her beautiful handmade ornaments each day leading up to Christmas. I could easily imagine expanding this into a full-length novel that I would adore.

The “Under the Mistletoe Collection” is a series of short stories written by Ali Hazelwood, Tessa Bailey, Olivia Dade, Alexandria Bellefleur, and Alexis Daria.
These five Amazon Original short stories will be available to read and listen to on Kindle and Audible on November 12.

Surprisingly, this was my first time reading the five featured authors in this collection. What a great way to sample their writing and get into the Christmas spirit at the same time! Ranging in length from 55 to 73 pages, these holiday stories are still able to bring the heat. The authors delivered such fun and spicy rom-coms. I loved that each story was completely different from the next, with a wide range of romance tropes, but they still felt like a cohesive collection. These holiday romances were so fun and the perfect winter reads. You can definitely read or listen to each story in one sitting.

Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for the ARCs in exchange for an honest review!

Very cute collection of 5 holiday stories! With little bits of spice thrown in but still enough plots for novellas. My favorite was of course by Ali Hazelwood!

This was a fun series. I am a fan of most of these authors, so this felt like a treat to me. I thought all the stories were really well done - I loved the interactions, the chemistry and the happy endings. I managed to read all the books in the collection in one afternoon, so quick reads that kept me engaged and wanting more. If you are looking for fun holiday reads, I would check out all the books in this collection.

Thank you netgalley for my advanced reader copy.

5 short Christmas stories that are very beautiful, entertaining and quick to read, I loved everything🩵🩵

Highly recommended, everyone should read it.✨

I wish this would have put me more in the holiday spirit. A few of these felt like a recycled story and it was a bit disappointing. But a few of them leaned into the novella length to have some bonkers holiday fun and I appreciated those more.

My favorites were Merriment and Mayhem by Alexandra Bellefleur and Only Santas in the Building by Alexis Daria.

In Merriment, you have a series of meet disasters between our Mcs that make our heroine consider... is the universe trying to tell me something? I love that he was all in from the beginning. And an adorable hot firefighter was perfect for the season.

Only Santas in the Building has neighbors both of whom aren't great at the communication, out loud ,with people, missing signals between each other. I really loved that they were both kind of introverted, but once they started talking, things went fast and hot.

All By My Elf by Olivia Dade was cute but stuck on a highway in a snowstorm is terrifying, not sexy. But it did make me laugh out loud with the commentary around their vehicle. The reality of being a teacher in higher education was very real with how the challenges in the profession were portrayed.

Cruel Winter by Ali Hazelwood was her usual Huge Guy, smol, kind of a mess girl in STEM (Doctor). With the usual miscommunication, a bit of it's always been you and childhood frenemies. It was just ok.

Merry Ever After by Tessa Bailey did not work for me at all. Once again... HUGE guy, tensy tiny woman. There was just too much for me to get past with the man not being able to find pants. Not to mention the baby issues... leaving a baby on a bed unattended in a strange house while you make out? Driving in a car without a car seat? And the language she used of "Suicide brain" was just too far. It was not for me.

This was a fantastic group of Christmas-time short stories. All but one was a total hit for me! Having read many Ali and Tessa books, their stories were everything I love about them in a perfect bite sized piece. I haven’t read much by Alexia Daria but everything I have, I have loved and her story was no exception! The other two authors are new to me but have been on my radar. Alexandria’s was so enjoy about and I cannot wait to read more by her because this story. Olivia’s story was disappointing and just not for me but I do still want to check out her other work because I can see potential in more fleshed out characters.

Overall, I definitely recommend reading these for the holiday season!

1. Cruel Winter with You (5⭐️)
❄️Best Friend’s Younger Brother
🩵Billionaire
❄️He Falls First & Hard
🩵It’s Always Been You
❄️Single POV

As much as I love and always want dual POV, this was classic Ali single POV with all the hints (subtle and not subtle) about the MMCs feelings. This short story packed a ton of history and backstory, gave some second chance vibes, and built the tension for Jamie and Marc. With a short story that did have a plot , this was not spicy but steamy. I was completely hooked and sped through!

Spoiler:
Phew, there was a point when I had to take a break, Jamie broke my heart! And I get why she did it; having spent her life with being abandoned by the person who should love you unconditionally will mess you up and leave emotional damage in its wake. With that early trauma, Jamie spent her life trying to be perfect and not too much to keep people in her life, and many left even if it wasn’t because of her. It reinforced that feeling of not being enough, the insecurity of being worthless or unlovable. On top of being in a mentally and emotionally difficult phase of life, her actions with Marc make sense. But Marc was so steadfast in his feelings for her and his determination to carve out a spot for himself in her life. He knew her, even when she didn’t know herself because she was his North Star, his guiding force. This man was down bad all his life for her and wasn’t going to stop! 🥹 He embodied what I love most about out Ali’s MMCs: they fall so hard and literally just want to anything to care for the FMC, make her life easier and want her to be happy in the simpiest and swooniest of ways.

2. Merry Christmas After (5⭐️)
💕Single Mom
🩶Small Town
💕Size Difference
🩶He Falls First & Hard
💕Dual POV

I enjoyed this! Instalove, he falls first and hard shorty story that is spicy and hot. Everything I love about Tessa Bailey in bite size. Evie was cautious because of her son and past. Luke had me swooning, he was persistent but respectful.

3. All By My Elf
❄️Workplace Romance
💚Forced Proximity
❄️Mutual Pining
💚Snowed In
❄️Single POV, 3rd Person

This was…meh. There were some good puns with Mrs. Claus’ treats and the Mincemobile. I just didn’t particularly care for either MC and found the story a little disjointed. While this is the first time I’ve read anything by this author, I still would like to try one of her books on my TBR.

4. Merriment and Mayhem(4.5⭐️)
🔥Firefighter MMC
💛Small(ish) Town
🔥Damsel in Distress
💛He Falls First
🔥Single POV

I have not read this author but this shorty short makes me want to check all her work! I loved it. Everleigh and all her unfortunate mishaps bring Griffin into her life and her rescue. The golden retriever energy of Griffin was perfection! He falls first and hard, and is so yummy! The spice was 🥵. A perfect holiday, instalove feel good story!

5. Only Santas in the Building (4.5⭐️)
🎄Neighbors to Lovers
🎅🏼Secret Santa Gifts /homemade
🎄Pining
🎅🏼He Falls First
🎄Christmas Party
🎅🏼Size Difference
🎄Grieving FMC
🎅🏼Single POV

I haven’t read much by Alexia Daria but everything I have, I have loved! This was no exception! It was fun and cute but heartfelt while dealing with grief. I loved that Evie keeps getting caught looking like a gemlin when she runs into Theo! I loved her Santa themed costume, a prefect one for the holiday! I could not get enough of the Christmas flirting and innuendos! The homemade Secret Santa gifts were the swooniest! The spice was 😮‍💨!!

It's hard to review a collection, since I felt very differently about some of these stories!

My top 3 were Cruel Winter with You, Merriment and Mayhem, & Only Santas in the Building - these were all 4.5/5 ⭐️ for me.
Merry Ever After + All by My Elf were not for me.

Yeah nope this wasn’t for me at all
If it hadn’t been 50 pages it would have been a dnf but I just kept going since I knew it was short
The insta love didn’t work for me in this one (it’s not something I mind), and I didn’t feel any chemistry between Evie & Luke.
I also couldn’t stop thinking about the lack of safety for this baby in far too many instances for such a short story 😢

Hmm I’m back and forth on my rating/review for this one.
I was really confused at first and had to read the first couple of pages a few times.
I love a long time crush/mutual pining story 🥹 I would have liked to feel it a little stronger though, I do know that’s hard in so few pages… I also struggle with that in 3rd person writing.
Nina & William are meant to be 37/35 but they felt younger to me.
I was rooting for them to confess their feelings, and being snowed in in a phallic-shaped vehicle was pretty unique 🙃

Cruel Winter With You - 4.5 stars
This story was super cute. The backstory of the characters was told very well. Jamie and Marc are forced to confront their unfinished business when they end up stuck together during a blizzard.
Marc was always in love with Jamie but he had to be patient until she realized she was also in love with him, and worthy of love. Marc spent years becoming the man he thought she deserved.
I loved the way Marc spoke of Jamie.
Although this was a short story, I felt like I really got to know the characters and felt their love for each other.

Merry Ever After - no rating
DNF. Not for me. I couldn't get through the language used for the first sex scene.

All By My Elf - 3.5 stars
Nina and William end up stuck in a weenie on wheels in a snowstorm on the highway. The entire situation was just hilarious. We didn’t get to know the characters and their backstories very well, other than bits of information here and there, but it was a good short story. It was well-written and kept me laughing.

Merriment and Mayhem - 4 stars
Everleigh is trying to fulfill one final perfect Christmas in her grandmother’s house before selling it. But, anything that could go wrong, does go wrong. Firefighter Griffin is always there to save the day.
The chemistry between these two is instant. Not many details were provided on the characters but I got a good sense of who they were regardless. Their attraction and connection was instant.
Even though it was a short story, I still thought it ended abruptly. I did enjoy the small town vibe though.

Only Santas in the Building - 4 stars
Started with a reference to a Charlie Brown tree and funko pops.. so I already loved this story.
Evie and Theo are neighbours in the same apartment building. Evie is constantly embarrassed by her appearance every time she runs in to Theo.
This short story was super cute, adorable and romantic! Perfectly cozy Christmas feel!

Thank you to all the authors and publisher for the opportunity read this novel early. I love a collection of holiday novellas and this did not disappoint. Short and sweet with spice. A perfect holiday combination.

This was a good collection of holiday novellas. As with typical novellas, most of them are insta-love (not all!) but I think that this is a good collection of books to get you in the holiday spirit. My favorite of the bunch was probably Ali Hazelwood's "Cruel Winter" because of the MMC.
