I loved how this story walked kids through how your body works to protect you from infections. The artwork is adorable. I will be gifting this to our daycare teachers and a copy for our own home.
This book was interesting and fun to read. The character of this book was interesting to see the use of the immune system explained so easily for younger generations.
I loved this idea of this book but it was rather confusing with the cell information at the end. Also the cells seemed to be a bit of a rip off from a well known science brand,
Immune Heroes: Protector of the Wound is a great picture book that tells how the immune system works to heal injuries. It's a delightful, informative, and science heavy book that will keep the interest of many young readers.
I appreciated that the scientific words for each part of the immune system process was used instead of cute little words. I'm all for promoting STEM in everyday environments for children.
The illustrations felt a little generic- it's a very popular style of children's book illustrations currently, so I felt like I have seen this same book several times.
However, it's a great, informative book that will be loved my many children.
Book 276 of 300 ~ 2024
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Such a clever way to teach children about their bodies and science while increasing their interest in the future regarding stem.
Easy to understand, especially with adorable and cute illustrations. I learnt from it myself! Hah!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Hmmm… Someone is "peddling" on a bike, although there's no sign of him actually going round selling anything, when a tiny pebble causes him to crash, and damage his knee. The following plot is what happens on a cellular level as the wound gets patched up, bacteria get kept out – and all the immune system's various cells turn up to the scene and sort things out. This wants to be a friendly, early primer to the immune system (and it wants to be a part of a series, as well, somehow) but it isn't great. The text tries to give every component of the system a trendy, hip-hoppy, abbreviated name, but it's quite often got the timing wrong as to when to state the full name, when to abbreviate it, when to define it… So copious 'characters' and types turn up, look weird, and we're left to piece together what we should be learning. Other books MUST have done this better.
A wonderfully illustrated and clearly explained storybook of what happens when we are injured and how our body is working behind the scenes to protect us, and why. The full terms are a bit of a mouthful for kids so they get cool nicknames to help remember, with an index at the back. This is a great way to teach kids how amazing our bodies are and opens the door to learning about science and biology.
Thank you to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These opinions are completely my own.
I strongly believe that is this book was around while I was in school, my biology grade would of improved. I will forever see the image of the platelet saying "I'm sticky" whenever I get my blood test results back.
A book the proves learning can be fun and aids (at least for me) in retaining the information given.
I have been looking for a book to add to my classroom science collection. The information in this is good and is definitely worth adding.
This was a cute book with a good view of the process our body goes through to heal. The illustrations a simple storyline are perfect for k-1, but the vocabulary and speed of the story are more in line with 4-6th grade. This mismatch makes it difficult for me to recommend it.
Superheroes and biology combine is this clever picture book. Dr Namita Gandhi's entertaining but educational story explains the healing process in a manner that even little ones can understand. When a young boy gets hurt, his sister reminds him that his body is working to make him better. Then the reader sees inside the body as Captain T rounds the forces. Tamika Bramwell has created cute cartoon characters that kids will enjoy. The author uses both the scientific name and a character name that youngsters can remember as she explains the process that the body uses. This mix of strait forward science and kid friendly terms and pictures make the book useful for anyone. It can a great addition to a home library to help kids deal with injury, but it can also serve as a resource in the classroom. The hero team diagram at the end of the book would help students reinforce the roles of the various microbes. I wish that I had this book decades ago when I was taking a biology class.
I received an electronic review copy of this book, but the opinions expressed are entirely my own.
This book is such a great idea to help introduce children to the immune system. Great illustrations, and love the idea of the 'hero board' at the end to solidify what they have learnt whilst reading.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this with my son, it's a fun story whilst also being educational at the same time and I thought it was a great introduction to Science for such young children. The illustrations are great too and really help them gain a good understanding of the story!
This book is so fun! It tells a story of a kid who scrapes his knee and the way his body goes in to action to heal and fight infection. The story is factual and easily breaks down concepts for younger readers. My son is seven and easily understood it, but I think younger and older kids would love it too. The illustrations are fun, captivating, and help explain the story. I love children’s that make complicated things easily digestible for all ages and this book fits the bill. I’d highly recommend this book!
Immune Heroes: Protector of the Wound by Dr. Damita Gandhi is an amazing book to read ! I used to work in the health field for four years in a family medicine clinic and I wished we had this book in our clinic. I LOVED this book! I am impressed and fascinated how the book was put together. I read it to my four year old and not only did she enjoy the artwork of the book, she learned some medical terms. She enjoyed learning about how there are immune heroes that help heal us whenever we are injured or have a sign of inflammation. Our favorite hero would be the Memory B cell because she has great memory that creates antibodies.
Thank you Netgalley for this beautiful book. We enjoyed every page of this children's book.
I love the concept of this - teaching kids how our immune system works to fight off bacteria and prevent infections - they truly are incredible!
The story is engaging, using superhero characters to deliver this fun and educational story!
The author did a wonderful job making the immune system fun while keeping it educational and using colorful illustrations to keep young readers engaged. I would highly recommend Immune Heroes: Protector of the Wound for young children interested in STEM but I feel most would find this story enjoyable.
An absolute must have. This little book does such a wonderful job of teaching kids about the different parts of their immune system and what each does while telling a fun adventure story. I love the use of a scraped knee as the inciting incident in this book, as I feel like even adults often don't know/ forget that it is not just when we have a cold, or such, that our immune system is hard at working fighting for us. The book is so incredibly well done and fun!
This is a great little book to show some of how the immune system works, I think it will capture the imagination of children to help them learn. I liked that although the author had given the parts of immune system nicknames at the back of the book there were their proper names and a reminder of their function
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
My 3yo actually followed along on this very informative tale about what happens in our bodies when we scrape our knee. I paused to clarify a few times, but she kept up pretty well. It was very info heavy but the illustrations were fun and engaging.
