At home, Joe's life is made miserable by his bitter mother and his drunken father. Outside. it's the "Irish Trouble" and the British that make his life unhappy. But like others he finds pleasure in learning to write poetry. But with the return of his older brother, the British invade his home life when a gun is found in his brother's bed. It's not a happy story, but it's life.
