Mamamigas
Written by Paula González & José Carlos Andrés
Illustrated by: Anna Font

When Paula was a child, she often thought of flying like a bird, running like a horse, or splashing through the ocean waves like a dolphin. As an adult and a mother, Paula nourished her loved ones and herself with her delicious meals. Always having crumbs, or migas, on her clothes led her family to give her the affectionate nickname of Mamamigas. As a grandmother, Mamamigas continued to cook with crumbs on her clothes. Seeing this, her grandchildren thought that the best solution was to present her with a gift, one that would always keep her clean – a chick! The gift was a success. So much so that in her later years, Mamamigas was found holding on to the back of her grown chick, ready to take flight. Saying her goodbyes, Mamamigas took flight and, leaving a trail of migas resembling stars behind her, she fulfilled one of her childhood dreams, that of flying. Now, every time her family finds a miga, they know that Mamamigas is with them. Written by Mamamigas’ son Andrés and Mamamigas González herself, this is a kind, tender and reflective circular story that shines light on the bonds created in inter-generational families through meals. Embracing the departure of loved ones, rejoicing in the small acts, celebrating memories and those who have left, this book combines reality with fantasy, making the hard topics of death and the departure of loved ones feel comforting and affable. Font’s rich blue, green, gray, and pink illustrated characters make for diverse, inclusive, magical and affectionate portrayals. Recommended for ages 4 and up.

¡Mamamigas!
