A highly speculative metaphysical fiction tale, Captains Wanted (2025) by Andres Schabelman is a weirdly, challenging read. It’s the story of an unnamed protagonist recording his self-journey through a series of sensory (smell, vision, hearing) and corporeal experiences. It has a hallucinogenic feel, with chapters that seem more like vignettes, flowing between these stages of a personal odyssey to find self-meaning. Unless you’re an aficionado of metaphysical fiction, this is not the book for a casual reader, as it’s weirdly surreal with a do not bother one star rating. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own, freely given and without any inducement. With thanks to Morgan James Fiction and the author, for an uncorrected advanced review copy for review purposes.

Andres Schabelman does a fantastic job in writing this book and the plot worked well in the genre. The characters were everything that I wanted and enjoyed getting through this healing journey with them.
