'The Grimm Society' is the first book of The Grimm Society series and it combines the YA school genre with mystery in a supernatural universe.
The story is pretty fast paced, almost too fast at times, as, in the end, the mystery was conveniently solved, which, for some part, it didn't make sense how our main character put things together, when she couldn't really figure out the most obvious clues. Also, there were some parts of the plot that felt disjointed and didn't develop organically in the plot.
Still, the mystery, in the end, was solid, and the main character was very interesting and adorable. The love interests were in theory stereotypical love interests but there were some toxic elements to their behavior, which were not talked about enough in retrospect. Spoiler!! Like Hunter being a jerk towards her before she joins him at school or that he had a girlfriend while he was flirting with our main lead. Or with Ian being a horrible mentor and leaving her injured and alone after her first battle!
The Grimm Society follows Everly as she experiences loss, followed by a new understanding that everything is not what it seems.
I was not expecting to cry so early in this book! Trigger warning for anyone who has lost someone they deeply cared for.
I enjoyed the secret society and academic setting, as well as figuring out the mystery of what was going on. There were enough clues to guess some of the secrets, but not all of them. I’m excited to read more of this series!
Thank you to the author, narrator, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free e-audio version of our title in exchange for my review.
This was my first book by the author, and I really enjoyed it. I felt like the characters were well developed and the story was one that pulled the reader in. Difficult to take a break from listening, I wanted to stay in the world! I'm looking for ward to reading others by this author!
4 stars for "really enjoyed it"
The Grimm Society by Chanda Hahn offers a fresh take on supernatural mystery, blending dark fairy tales with a thrilling investigation. Seventeen-year-old Everly Hart becomes a "griever" after witnessing a tragic death, gaining the ability to see supernatural creatures known as grimms. Her invitation to Gravemark, a school for training grievers, adds an exciting twist as her school assignments turn deadly.
The mix of mystery, danger, and supernatural elements makes this book highly engaging. Hahn’s storytelling is original, keeping readers hooked as Everly tries to solve a series of murders involving grimms. Fans of Nancy Drew and Vampire Academy will appreciate the balance of suspense, fantasy, and investigative twists. The combination of high-stakes drama and clever mysteries makes this a fascinating read.
The narration was really immersive and I could see everything taking place inside my mind.
I devoured this book in like 5 hours.
The way Chanda writes is such an easy flowing way that makes the reader feel apart of the story instantly. Theres alot of worldbuilding that needs to happen but because Everly is right there with you nothing feels like an infodump or that your missing out on anything.
The fantasy is weaved perfectly into the story to the point that it feels like it could be real-life.
More then that the mystery aspects of the story are so fucking perfect that while you don't know who it is at all times when the secret is read your able to see every single clue you missed and can truely believe that missed the clues and not that they weren't given too you.
Loved it and will be continuing the series.
The audiobook was just as amazing I truely felt like Amy McFadden brought these characters to life. Everyone had a voice of their own without it feeling over done. I almost put on a fantasy soundtrack underneath the audiobook to make it feel even more like a movie. The voices and the story made the perfect experience while reading this story..
