While I'm someone who would NEVER agree to give a speech at a special event, I still enjoyed this book as a prompt of what to SAY to special people in my life. I think we don't spend enough time expressing how we feel to those around us, and this book helps guide those words.

Well, this was a trip. A quick one. To the weddings, funerals, bar mitzvahs, and other occasions of the habitues of Santa Monica. Where I come from those wedding speeches are rough! Way too personal, way too many wise cracks, way too much like a roast. I get that this book is about writing a funny speech. The examples here would play well in Hollywood and environs (I know because I have relatives there). The advice given by the authors is not to make the speech about yourself, but the irony is that speeches like those in this book are huge performances. Anyone who gives these sorts of speeches makes themselves the star of the show. This is a cultural thing. I'm not a wet blanket, but I sure don't want to be the wise-cracking center of attention whose speech everyone wants to post on their social media account. That wedding, funeral, work event is not about me.

If you’ve ever been roped into giving a speech and thought, I wish I could make people laugh, How to Write a Funny Speech by Carol Leifer and Rick Mitchell is a must-read. The book breaks down humor-writing into manageable steps, from brainstorming funny stories to crafting punchlines and engaging your audience. I especially loved their advice on finding humor in everyday life—it made me realize how much material I already have! Their examples are both hilarious and practical, and the conversational tone keeps the book easy and fun to read.

While it focuses on speeches, the tips work for all kinds of scenarios, like wedding toasts or work presentations. I appreciated how they stress being authentic—letting your humor match your personality instead of copying someone else’s style. Whether you’re a complete beginner or just looking to up your game, this book is practical, insightful, and, of course, funny.

Nice, lighthearted book that walks you through the steps of writing a funny speech. I was surprised that it was pretty brief and focused mostly on critiquing some basic speeches. I wouldn't buy this as a gift but it's probably easy to page through if you're nervous.

Short, simple, and to the point, this book provides advice on something most people are terrified to do: making a speech. The advice is on giving a funny speech, but this is practical enough to use for any speech. Step by step, the book explains how to organize your thoughts and turn them into a speech from the intro to the middle to the end. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
