Not my kind of book it felt to far fetched with past lives helping solve case it didn't help the narrator although clearly spoken and precise her voice was one pitch and didn't put any emotion into the story line

Overall the book was enjoyable. When I began the book read as if there might have been a book or two before this one, but there isn’t.
The main character Kaitlyn was interesting. She has dreams of past lives. This aspect I didn’t really care for, but it did help her in solving this case so I guess it added up.
The language used was a little off putting and technical. A lot of unnecessary explanations for some situations.
The book has a slight conclusion because it does end and solve the case, but it’s left open for a sequel or series.

Overall the book was interesting and kept my attention so I would probably read/listen to the next one if it’s published.

Thank you NetGalley for the copy.

Killer Insight is a serial killer cat story with a paranormal twist. The detective on the case looks similar to several recent victims and throughout the story her ability to remember her past lives is revealed.

When she dreams, her past lives. She finds at connections between at least 4 past selves. I was drawn to this part of the story and it first came into play about 30% into the book.

I liked the detective perspective and details in the early stages of finding the bodies. I felt like I was watching an episode of Bones or Law and Order SVU with the detailed analysis of the bodies and crime scene. It goes from body discovery to the court room.

Overall it was a very unique story- I liked that it pulled in the supernatural element with her dreaming abilities that made it a little more than a typical serial killer chase. It kept me wondering and guessing the whole time, did not expect the twist.

Narrator was expressive and I enjoyed listening to them.

Set in my hometown, the story follows Detective Kailyn Kruse, who utilizes her supernatural abilities to solve a complex case involving three people murdered at the same location, with evidence pointing to different killers.

The book captivated my attention throughout, and I particularly enjoyed the main character's energetic and passionate approach to her work. While the novel was engaging and the concept intriguing, there was potential for a bit more backstory to deepen the narrative. Nonetheless, the foundation laid out in this story seems promising for a series, and I'm excited to see how the author develops it in future books.

Killer Insight has a really interesting premise - detective Kaitlyn dreams of her past lives, and they often give her a nudge that helps her solve her current cases. I was super intrigued by this concept. However, the execution fell a little short for me. I think that this story kind of straddled between being a cozy mystery and being a thriller and didn't satisfy either one. I do think some readers will be able to get into it, I was just hung up on the writing style and the story development, which didn't work for me. (2.5/5 stars)

I loved the premise! Kaitlyn is a detective with a supernatural ability; in her dreams, she remembers her past lives and they help her to solve crimes. Brilliant! Kaitlyn does have to be careful though, as not everyone would be supportive of her gift and it certainly wouldn't hold up in court as evidence!

In the early part of the story, I found some of the timelines confusing, but once it clicked and all fell into place, I was hooked.

A missing persons case that becomes a race against time to find a serial killer, with great characters who were brought to life by Shannon Condon's excellent narration.

4.5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Karoline Anderson and Highbridge for an ARC in return for an honest review.

Very different!

Kaitlyn is a detective who just caught a new case. A missing woman has now been found murdered on a hiking trail…partially buried.

But that’s not all. Once they find this woman, they start finding other body parts….in the same area. Some are MANY years old… what the heck is going on here?

As they investigate (her and her partner Joe), things start happening to Kaitlyn…and honestly, I was a bit confused at times… but then…IT ALL CLICKED!

Kind of multiple timelines, as some of the cases are stemming from many years ago…and so, the investigations were also from many years ago…

Kind of otherworldly… and, if you read it, you’ll understand…but I don’t want to say any more…

Kind of scary, as one of the timelines involves a nurse in the 90’s…and I can vouch that things were VERY different back then…

All in all though, a really good book with some ideas that I’ve never seen explored before.

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

I actually really enjoyed this debut. At times the language was a little clinical, but it kept my attention throughout. The whodunit wasn’t actually much of a mystery but there was a twist maybe 2/3rds of the way through that really caught me off guard and I loved it. I listened to the audiobook and the narration was good and fit the voice of the character really well. All in all, I finished this super quick and would definitely recommend it.

I was really excited for this book after I read the description. I am a big audio book girly and listen to a couple audio books a week. Unfortunately I could not get into this book because of the narrator. She was not for me. I personally did not think the voice went with the story and could not focus on what she was saying. I do listen to a lot of audio books but I had to DNF this story due to the narrator. Hopefully this book will be great for someone else!

Thank you, Net Galley, the author, and the publisher, for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

⭐️⭐️.5/5 stars for Killers Insight and Karoline Anderson. Quick listen but ultimately .. meh.

I am so grateful to NetGalley, the author, and HighBridge Audio for providing me with an advance audiobook in exchange for my honest review. I was initially drawn to this book by its intriguing cover, and the premise was equally captivating.

The story revolves around Detective Kaitlyn Kruse, who finds herself immersed in a missing person’s case that spirals into a man hunt for an active serial killer. What sets Kaitlyn apart is her unique supernatural ability to remember her past lives, which she leverages to navigate the complexities of the case. The idea behind this premise is quite brilliant and reminiscent of the popular series iZombie, although I felt it didn’t quite reach the same level of execution.

Overall, I would say this book was fine but not necessarily my cup of tea. While I appreciate the creativity behind the plot, I found that it lacked some of the depth and engagement that could have made it truly stand out. The twists and pacing held my interest, but certain elements felt predictable.

Despite my reservations, I don’t regret requesting and listening to Killer Insight. It's a unique take on the detective genre, and I can see how it might resonate with those who enjoy a blend of supernatural elements with crime investigation. If you’re in the mood for something different, this book might just hit the right note for you!

This book was fine, but it didn’t quite connect with me. I think others may appreciate it more than I did.

I did really enjoy this book especially the aspect of being able to see your past lives in your dreams it did take a while for me to get into though

I feel like this was a great debut book and has the potential to become an amazing series. I loved the narrator and the characters. I enjoyed the flashbacks to the past. However, there just wasn’t enough suspense for me. I felt like we knew almost right away who the killer was. Personally, I prefer books with more suspense and not knowing until the end who did it.

A police procedural with a touch a paranormal. A body is found in what appears to be a shallow grave. Once the medical examiner arrives, additional bodies are found. The main character Kaitlyn has vivid dreams that provide leads on the current case as well as cases and situations that assist her in finding answers. This is a fairly fast paced story set in picturesque Seattle. There are twists and turns to please everyone.  The narrator was great, I was able to listen at 1.5x, and was able to comprehend every inflection and character.

I read the audiobook and the narrator was not a good fit for this book! I would’ve given this book a little more if it wasn’t for that.

The story itself and the main character are interesting.

Despite having a preference for first person POV, I wish the book was written in third person. The internal dialogue was really annoying and it was hard to know when it was internal monologue or just a description of what was going on.
The dialogues were not realistic more often than not. But I’m not sure if it’s the narrator’s delivery or the writing.

The pacing was fine. As a true crime girly, I’m not sure if the serial killer made sense and if the evidence was actually enough to go to trial but at the same time people have been convicted with less I guess.

I would be inclined to read more books as a palette cleanser but it would have to be a different narrator.

This story really caught my attention, because the main character, Kaitlyn Kruse, has a supernatural gift and her partner does not know about it. This ability helps her solve a lot of cases. Kaitlyn can remember her past lives in her dreams and can use them to solve the current mysteries. The chapters switch between the now and Kaitlyn’s dream sequences, and you figure out the pattern pretty quickly. There are many twists and turns, and there are a few red herrings along the way. I really liked the narrator's voice and how she effortlessly switched between characters. If you like the supernatural in your thrillers, I would recommend this book.

Killer Insight by Karoline Anderson
Narrated by Shannon Condon
Provided by NetGalley

I would classify this as a slow chick-lit police procedural with a hint of the supernatural. The narration was good once the right speed was chosen. For me that was around 1.5 -1.75.

I was initially drawn to the story by the blurb, thinking the inclusion of past-lives might add an interesting aspect to the story. Sadly, this was not the case. The use of it was so limited and the explanation of the ‘realistic’ kind of dreams came off as mundane.

The author clearly did a lot of research for this story. Unfortunately, they seem to have included all of it regardless of whether it was relevant or not. It was crazy how much of the ‘procedure’ from ‘police procedure’ was detailed when it wasn’t necessary and came off as a teaching exercise. In addition, instead of utilising subtext, it was overridden by explanations.

Personally, I found this a struggle to get through. If the book hadn’t been provided by Netgalley, it would have been a dnf.

Wow.. so much to unpack but it would be hard to do without spoilers but I’m going to try.

I’ll start with the positive.
The audio narrator did a great job but for most it would have to be sped up at least a little as it’s painfully slow which doesn’t match the feeling the book tries to convey. But her different voices were great and she didn’t over dramatize it which is great.

The story itself was enjoyable. It was clearly set up to be a potential series even being very obvious about a future love interest. It came off as the author didn’t want to pull focus from everything else to get a relationship underway but wanted to introduce potential.

Now for the challenges…

The entire book sounded like the author was talking down to the reader. The explaining of such basic things was condescending. For example they talk about a 3 year old and literally offered that (paraphrase) “of course the three year old could be ruled out as a serial killer.” Ya think?

I don’t mind when authors use “big words” instead of the typical words used in books and everyday conversation but when there are conversations like a doctor talking to a patient you have to make it realistic. Like saying “I don’t think you broken your arm” you wouldn’t say radius and ulna in the context that the author did. I actually said out loud that the book sounded like a doctor writing a book and then come to find out after the fact that the author is instead an MD.

I think that’s part of the problem. It’s one that can be fixed easily with having an editor soften the prose and smooth it out but that didn’t happen here. Other issues are that the POV jumping without chapter headings of who was talking and when was very jarring and harder to keep track of especially since the FMC dreams about her past lives.

One last thing I’ll mention is when you above a book where it is set in the real world with real places etc.. and then you have something unrealistic in police and or court procedure it comes off that reader wasn’t done properly.

So if you can deal with a bunch of execution issues the story has merit and with some experience this debut author may have some great books down the road.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Audio for the free audio ALC so I could leave my voluntary review.

My rating system since GoodReads doesn’t have partial stars and I rarely round up.

⭐️ Hated it
⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, really not my cup of tea (potentially DNF’d or thought about it)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Meh, it was an ok read but nothing special
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed it! Would recommend to others
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! Will circle back and read again
