An eventful and engaging story about a boy whose ability to speak to dead relatives sends him on a unique quest to bring his scattered family together in order to save their common heritage.
As a writer, Mills has the gift of weaving in local lore (in this case, from the city of Charleston) and magic and mayhem in a way that's guaranteed to entertain readers of the target age group - and beyond. This gets 3.5 stars.
This book had a lot of interesting elements but it was incredibly slow paced. It has a strong family theme which drew me in. It just didn’t hold my attention.
This is a beautifully narrated story about a young black boy and his family, who have supernatural powers. It has a solid, well-written plot with a lot of fun elements. I especially loved the ending.
Really enjoyed this book there was magic and a massive stakes basket ball game I loved that everyone showed up in the end and the closeness with the family
This is a a great middle grade book that intruduces the audince to part of Charleston’s rich culture, folklore, and history though Twelve-year-old Theo Tatterly’s ability to see ghosts is a useful skill in a house full of dead relatives. Theo wants to make the basketball team but also at the same time trying to save the family home.
JD Jackson voice has texture to the story. Great choice for a narrator.

I appreciate the history in the book & the cast of characters. However overall this book wasn’t for me. And yes I know it’s middle grade but I couldn’t imagine enjoying this when I was that age. The concept is good but was just poorly executed. There were too many people & too much information getting thrown at me which made it confusing at times & caused a disconnect that took me out of the story. It just felt like it dragged. I’m glad I got the audiobook instead of a physical or kindle edition so that I didnt waste too much time.
