Agree with others who've said this was at times frustrating. I loved the Prologue and the premise it laid out. I found the first chapter a bit of an info-dump, really long explanation about her anxiety and how she takes sertraline for it, and then still needed to say things like, 'i took my sertraline, which I have for anxiety.'
Otherwise it was fine for a thriller
Under Her Skin is a novel about a woman named Natasha doing everything she can to defend and protect her son, ultimately leading them into another potentially life-threatening situation. When they move into a home left to Natasha from an unknown relative, Natasha hires a cheap local handy-man to help with repairs. The pair notice weird happenings and begin to lose trust in the safety of their new beginning.
This novel was interesting, suspenseful, and kept my attention throughout. The chapters are a bit long (I am typically a short-chapter fan) but the content is intriguing and I found myself curious about what could unfold next. The ending felt a bit rushed - after the twist was revealed the author could have explored the after effects a little bit more. Overall this is a minimal critique compared to the work's overall quality. The characters felt well developed and the inner thoughts of Natasha accurately depict a woman riddle with anxiety, doing whatever it takes to protect her little family with little means.
This was my first Jessica Huntley novel and I will certainly be checking out her other works based on this reading experience!
Another Great Book by Jessica Huntley. I Really enjoyed this book. You don't really know who to trust and what to believe. There were so many twists and turns in this book.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Under Her Skin by Jessica Huntley is a different kind of thriller! This thriller will build an atmosphere from "Can't say boo to Goose" to "Wach your back B*ch!"!
In the beginning, this book made my blood boil much! That spoilt brat just literally was screaming "Hate me"! Took me all my strength to not scream at this book!
And emotions are good! This means the author gets under our skin! And this is what we want!
No jumping in timelines and no multiple POV so easy to follow :)
Single mum Natasha works her ars off to provide for her 17 years old kid Max. Dad had never been in the picture and things got messy when Natasha learned that Max was mixed with the wrong crowd! The only way is to run! But then life flips upside down and the new beginning becomes a new nightmare!
Absolutely love this author and recommend grabbing a copy on 27 Nov 2024!
Thank you NetGalley and Inkubator Books for this copy!
This was a slow burner of a read and at times I did wish it would 'hurry up'
That said I liked the actual storyline and Natasha was a well developed and frustrating character.
I did not guess the ending which is good and all in all this was a read I really didn't care about. I did enjoy my reading time though..
A great, fast-paced and entertaining read. Under Her Skin is so compellingly written that it hooks you in from the start and doesn’t let up until the end - by then, all sorts of completely outlandish things have happened but somehow you don’t question it because you’re too busy turning pages to find out what happens next. The ending feels a little bit too quick and easy, but overall this is a fun read.
Wow! Another fantastic read by Jessica Huntley! I thoroughly enjoyed this dark and creepy tale. Packed with emotion and a good dose of terror. Fantastic characters just made this story all the more enjoyable. Twisted and exciting, with no idea who to trust.
Thank you NetGalley, Jessica Huntley and Inkubator Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I found Under Her Skin by Jessica Huntley to be a bit of a frustrating read, but overall an easy to read thriller with a twist I didn't predict at the end. I thought it took too long to get to the main storyline - we don't get what's mentioned in the synopsis (Henry) until almost 40% of the way into the book. The MC is an incredibly frustrating character to read, so I was never able to be fully invested, even though I enjoyed the plot and the idea of the inherited spooky house.
I found this a very frustrating read.
An ok storyline but the main character really got on my nerves.
I plodded along until the end but found even that left me wanting.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
This book had me so angry!!! I was yelling at the character as she just let so much happen without sticking up for herself. I think it was still entertaining but it was frustrating at the same time. I feel like the main character deserved what was coming
Thank you to NetGalley, to the author, and to the publisher for this complementary ARC in exchange for my honest review!!!
Okay read. The suspense didn't build like I had hoped. Easy read. The final twist wasn't what I was expecting, so that was a nice surprise.
Super fast paced and thrilling. I could not believe how quickly I finished Under Her Skin. I HAD to know what happened! Highly recommend.
If you're looking for one of those thrillers that will keep you up all night just to finish the book, this is it! Natasha was an incredibly well written character with a lot of layers. I enjoyed every aspect of this book! A couple of the twists I saw coming but everything was so well written that I just enjoyed everything.
I absolutely loved this book, I flew through it within a couple of days because it’s such an intriguing read. I absolutely loved the characters, I loved how much you got to know Natasha from the start and you could learn about her struggles and her motivations which really helped the reader gain more of an understanding of the decisions she was making throughout, and it was great to see such character development too. Her character gained such strength throughout which was great to read. I really enjoyed all the characters and didn’t trust anybody! I was constantly trying to guess what the ending would be and I have to admit I was absolutely wrong! The story was very intriguing, it did follow the typical thriller storylines but when written well I can only see that as a positive as they do work well and this one absolutely did. I’d definitely recommend to mystery & thriller lovers, it kept me thoroughly entertained throughout and the writing was brilliant.
A woman invites a stranger into her home to help fix up a house she inherited in the countryside. The stranger, Henry, becomes too involved in her life and she soon discovers he is hiding a dark secret that puts her and her son in danger. Henry offers to help keep the secret, but at a cost...
Reading a book that is impossible to put down is a rare and delightful experience, one that demands your full attention and devotion. This particular book is a binge-worthy read that will have you canceling plans and neglecting responsibilities just to keep turning the pages.
The protagonist, Natasha, is a deeply flawed yet relatable character, struggling with anxiety and facing challenges that many readers will find familiar. Her teenage son, while occasionally irritating, undergoes a transformation that is both surprising and admirable.
As you immerse yourself in the plot, you will find yourself questioning what you would do in Natasha's shoes. There are moments when she seems to have nothing left to lose, and it's impossible not to empathize with her struggles. I found myself relating to Natasha on a personal level, and I couldn't help but wonder if I could learn something from her problem-solving skills (hahaha being sarcastic here!). The unexpected ending and clever twist added an intriguing element to the story.
I hesitate to reveal more about the book, as I wouldn't want to spoil the experience for anyone. Suffice it to say, this is a story that will stay with you long after you've turned the final page, because this book keeps on killing!
Thank you, Inkubator Books for ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I need answers, I ate this book up in less than 24 hours this was a tasty thriller book to get you out of a reading slump. I absolutely loved the depth of the characters, Nat the struggling mother trying to make ends meet and just survive being a single mother and her son the typical teenager that blames all his problems on everyone else. The attitude from the son was frustrating, Jessica definitely shown depth on how frustrating teenagers can be sometimes but the layers of the book and descriptions was amazing. Good conclusive thriller book but I need answers without any spoilers I needed just a few more pages on why certain things happened to certain characters.
Natasha and her teenage son live the city to move out to the country when she inherits a house from a long lost aunt and to flee from drug dealers demanding money from her son. When they move in they find the house to be in poor shape and Adian her aunt's attorney recommends a local man, Henry to do the remodeling. After both getting jobs Natasha works on saving up enough to pay the drug dealer and her son keeps busy working and with a new friend. Henry seems to want to get overly involved in their lives and not just be a contractor. When Natasha digs up a secret in the garden Henry demands they not call the police and hid the evidence. The suspense builds as Natasha has to figure out how to get Henry out of their lives while not endangering themselves. A fast paced book but I personally did not like the ending or the character Natasha.
I enjoyed this one so much. My second thriller read now by Jessica and I think I now have another favourite go to author for thriller books. The characters are very well written in this book, you feel like you know them. From the stroppy, moody teenager, Max to Henry's creepy vibe. Every minute of reading I really felt like I was there in the house with them. I loved the story, and don't want to give anything away and spoil it for anyone else. I didn't see the end coming at all. I have more of this authors book on my TBR list and will definitely be reading more. One I would definitely recommend reading..
Jessica Huntley, this book gave me all the goosebumps, woke me up thinking about it, and was a book i could not put down. Absolutely fantastic! Get ready for a wild ride with this book!!
This was a pretty engaging book from the beginning. I really enjoyed how well the surrounding areas and characters were laid out in a way that was interesting but still easy to read. While it was engaging, I still found it to be predictable most of the way through. There were some aspect that caught me by surprise still, but overall I was not shocked by any of the twists. It was still a good book and I would read this again. :)
