Go get this cookbook. As someone raised in an Italian home, it is spot on. The recipes are authentic and range from simple to more advanced. The photos are wonderful and Matteo's stories about his family and friends had me laughing throughout. It truly brought me back to Sundays with my family sitting around the table eating and telling stories and teasing everyone. For me, food and family are intertwined. This book is just that. I was sent an e-advanced copy and am going to buy the physical paper copy because I loved it so much. You will too.

ARC REVIEW!!! Thank you @matteolane & @chroniclebooks for the ARC!
Publishing Date: 04/01/2025

Mari’s 2025 Reads: “Your Pasta Sucks: A Cookbook” by Matteo Lane. 5/5
Matteo Lane’s debut cookbook is sprinkled (pun intended) with his signature humor amongst family recipes, recipes from his time in Italy, as well as recipes from Matteo’s found/chosen family. The book starts with a foundation about Matteo’s love of cooking from time spent in his Italian family’s kitchen as a child. Matteo offers us definitions for common Italian ingredients using his slapstick humor throughout the pages. Be sure to pick up a copy for some fabulous recipes as well as a good laugh! Truly this book was al dente! #arcreviews #netgalleyarc

There's something about going through this cookbook that you're just entertained from the stories as well as just wanting to try almost all of the recipes. This feels like you're with Matteo Lane and his family and friends, hanging out, and oh, let's indulge in some such nostalgic and amazing food. These are the days that you just long for, and to get recipes that you can keep for a long time? Sign me up.

The cookbook is vibrant. It's also heartfelt and hilarious. With that, you know that the pictures will draw you in, no matter if you want to make it or not. Then of course, you'd want to make it. There's a punch in the tone that the humor lingers right above the great recipes. I enjoyed browsing through this and definitely marked some of the recipes.

Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for a copy of this. All opinions are my own.

Okay first and foremost, the hilarious picture is what drew me into this book. I knew it had to be humorous and cool just based on the cover. It did not disappoint. I really enjoyed learning about Matteo through his funny and honest stories and recipes. I also have to admit, I got a little embarrassed bc I was doing a lot of things he said not to do with my pasta! 🤣 I’m really looking forward to making all these recipes and buying a hardcover of this book for my shelf and for my friends.

This was a charming and funny cookbook that made me so hungry for pasta! Matteo Lane uses his comedic flavor to give readers a glance into his family through food. He's clear about how devisive his topic is and where his opinions come from. Any fan of his or anyone with a sense of humor looking to up their pasta game could benefit from this book.

Your Pasta Sucks will be a great cookbook to add to any collection! Not only is it full of irresistible-sounding recipes (I haven't yet tried any but I have a list of which to start with!), but it also features Matteo Lane's comedic snark and wit. I actually appreciate his commentary at the start of each recipe, and the way the recipes are laid out is easy to follow. I also really like that he includes both cup and gram measurements for ingredients. The photography in this book is also very appealing and definitely entices you to want to get cooking. Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle books for the chance to preview this book prior to publication!

I received a copy of this eBook from netGalley for a honest review.

This book is more about the stories then the recipes which is fine by me. If you're looking for basic recipes that are America Italian then this is a good book. If you're looking for funny stories and antidotes then this is a great book for you.

Your Pasta Sucks contains multitudes. It is a very funny memoir from a self-proclaimed Italian, Irish, Mexican homosexual. It also has family recipes that have a lot of ingredients and mostly take a while to cook. Photos are rather hit and miss. Nutritional information is non-existent.

Admittedly, I wouldn’t recommend this as a cookbook. The author has a YouTube channel focusing on comedy and cooking. However, there have been no new cooking videos posted in the last two years. I have to assume that he agrees with me that humor, not cooking, is his strong suit.

The humor, however, is spot on. It seems to be based on his loud, and blunt, family and lifestyle. A Mexican grandfather who had a second family, who named the kids in both family the same names so he would never mix them up. The Mexican TV show host who admired his grandfather’s ingenuity years later. It is laugh out loud funny more so because it has the ring of truth.

If you are looking for an escape from all the doomscrolling, read Your Pasta Sucks and immerse yourself in someone else’s humorous life for a while. 5 stars!

Thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for providing me with an advanced review copy.

Although he’s a comedian, Matteo Lane takes cooking and good food very very seriously.
I find that his intelligent but sarcastic demeanor has translated well to this cookbook. There are a lot of cookbooks out now that try to engage all types of cooks (or non-cooks). I think Matteo bridges the gap by being sardonic but also very good at what he’s doing.

Saying “how to cook pasta like an Italian, Irish, Mexican homosexual” is honest and refreshing.

As a major fan of pasta, I was thrilled at the options in this book. It is 75% pasta and very specific. Take his recommendations to heart! He is not okay with substitutions or half-assing a recipe.

I’d never heard of bronze cut pasta but now I won’t shut up cabout it to the cooks in my life.

Thank you so much to Chronicle Books for this free ARC via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review! This is out 4/1/25!

Comedian Matteo Lane walks us through how to CORRECTLY make pasta - whether fresh or dried - while infusing his signature humor and love for Italian throughout. Can’t say I’ve read a cookbook that actually made me laugh before this, and it’s one of many reasons this cookbook stands out. I’ve already flagged so many recipes to try and Matteo makes each dish approachable and easy.

If you love Matteo's stand up or his podcast with Nick (IYKYK) then you're gonna love this cookbook! Much like Matteo, I'm a second generation Italian-American who grew up in Northern Illinois. What I love the most about this cookbook is that its recipes are familiar in taste, if not in cooking methods, while still paying homage to original Italian traditions. It's also educational - did you know fettuccine alfredo is extremely controversial? As soon as you read this you'll understand. Can't recommend this book enough and I can't wait to work passata into my cooking rotation.

I’m always looking for a good cookbook and this one was filled with witty stories and funny quips about why he is not quite qualified to write this cookbook but is writing it all the same!

I'm not a cook by any means, but I am a fan of Matteo Lane (going back to his appearances on PNS Explosion!). This "cookbook" provides simple recipes that even the least-experienced of us can make with confidence. Can't wait to try them out! In between recipes, Matteo shares core ingredients to keep on hand, fun stories and anecdotes, and interviews with friends. Recommended for readers and would-be cooks looking for a side of humor.

Matteo Lane is one of my favorite standup comics, so when he announced that he was writing a cookbook, I was very excited! While I have not tried out the recipes themselves, the photographs look amazing, and the directions seem rather straightforward. The commentary for each, as well as the related stories, are exactly how I picture Matteo telling them on stage with his signature humor. A good read!

*Your Pasta Sucks* by Matteo Lane is a sharp, hilarious dive into the world of food, culture, and identity. Written by the stand-up comedian and chef, this book is a witty blend of personal anecdotes, biting humor, and thoughtful reflections on what it means to create and appreciate food. Lane’s tone is irreverent yet endearing, guiding readers through his pasta-making journey with equal parts comedy and insight. His voice is authentic, unapologetically candid, and often laugh-out-loud funny, making it easy to connect with both the culinary novices and the seasoned foodies alike. Whether you're a pasta enthusiast or just enjoy good storytelling, Lane's humorous take on food culture will leave you both entertained and slightly more discerning about your next meal at the Olive Garden.

This is the funniest cookbook I have ever read. After I found the recipe I wanted to make, I just kept reading because it was that funny. It felt like being in a kitchen with a good friend and an even better bottle of wine.

The recipes feel like they should all be written on an index card with too many food stains and years of use. They all feel deeply personal, well revised, and more delicious than any food you could buy.

The recipes are written in both imperial and metric measurements, so there's no need to convert recipes between volume and weight cooking. The pictures are drool worthy, and the instructions for each recipe are clear and easy to follow.

Overall, a fantastic cookbook for anyone who wants a bit of personality with their meal.
