Even though I appreciate and acknowledge that this book was fundamental in the discussion of queer rights, I found it boring. I didn't see any interest from the author in what I read, and so I lost interest altogether. I won't deny the impact this classic may have had, but it was not for me at all.
Riki Wilchins allows us to understand better of LGBT+ people with insightful theories. I can now embrace myself in a new way.
Thanks, NetGalley and the publisher, for the ARC of this book to read early in exchange for and honest review.
New edition of a book first published in 2004, the introduction has been updated but I'm not sure if much else has. This is an excellent primer for queer/gender theory, introducing key thoughts by Derrida and Butler, in an accessible form, that will either be enough or encourage further thinking. Occasionally, there was too much of the author's perspective, also some naivety when they wrote:
"The politicisation of food is almost non-existent."
"Eating has almost no consequences for morality or sin, and we don't struggle to come to terms with our hunger the way we do our sexuality."
Overall, as a primer it does its job well.
With thence to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It was great to be able to read through this book that was originally published in the 90's and to see the updates thanks to the incredible advancements that have been made in the discussions and open consideration of gender and sexuality. This book gave me a lot to ponder on.
I did find moments of it difficult to keep my attention and the spelling errors jolted me, but I look forward to seeing the edited copy on shelves and believe everyone should consider an open outlook on the discussion within.
A great, more updated version of the original book. Very fascinating to read as someone who was already interested in this topic area. Would recommend for both people new to the subject but also those more well established.
A great primer into queer theory with some amazingly detailed information that everyone needs to read (and WAY more easy to understand than some of the theory).
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own
