Even though I didn’t read the first book in the series, I had no trouble jumping in. If there hadn’t been any mention of a previous case, I wouldve thought this was the first book in the series. I enjoyed the bantering between Lady Petra and Duncan, although Lady Petra did come across as quite naive at times given her supposed amateur sleuth and trusted agent of the Queen. The plot was engaging and moved forward at a decent clip. Overall a solid period piece/cozy murder mystery.

Received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I'm so excited to have discovered another great historical mystery series! Set in 1815 London and featuring Lady Petra, a smart and courageous heroine. She is tasked by Queen Charlotte with investigating a murder. In the course of her investigation, she uncovers a plot to take down the monarchy and learns things about her fiance, who died three years earlier.

This was a well crafted and complex mystery with enjoyable characters and a growing love story. I loved Petra and Duncan's relationship. They're well suited for each other, and their pairing is delightful

Eilidh Beaton is the perfect narrator for this series. Her voice for Lady Petra is superb, and the side characters are very well done also.

I eagerly await the next installment in this series.

Thank you, Macmillan Audio, for this complimentary copy. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I didn't get to finish this book before it was archived. I guess I never downloaded it so it disappeared on the archive date. I got about 75% through though and it was just OK. I enjoyed the first one, although it wasn't very memorable. This one I found to be quite confusing. Maybe that is user error and spacing out while listening on audio but I don't usually have that problem. There was just a lot going on and I couldn't seem to keep up. I have it on hold at the library but by the time I get it, I will have forgotten so much that it won't be worth it to pick it back up again. I doubt I'll continue on with the series.

I have to say, this now-series has quietly become one of my favourites. Is Petra an historically accurate protagonist? Probably not, but I don't know if I've had more fun following a main character in months! She has grit and determination and yes that does lead her into some rather serious scrapes, but that is what makes for such a good book.

In the first book in the series (Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Lord), the romance and mystery were balanced fairly evenly. The mystery takes the lead in this book, but it worked well-there were a lot of moving pieces and it gave the story room to breathe. We don't see a lot of mysteries set in the Regency period, so I appreciate that Connally gave herself room to flesh the period out. (And what solving a mystery might look like then.)

Honestly, it is a fun and entertaining mystery that I couldn't put down! And as always, Eilidh Beaton's narration was just perfect.

This Regency-era novel, second in a series, is set around the time of Napoleon's surrender. Lady Petra Forsyth is called upon by Queen Charlotte to investigate the death of an orphanage matron. Could this murder be connected to the death of her fiancé three years earlier? As she uncovers the truth, Petra becomes entangled with violent revolutionaries who want to abolish the monarchy.

There is a LOT going on in this book and I found it really hard to keep up sometimes with the many characters and threads of inquiry. An interesting story and a fascinating time period, well written, but kind of cluttered. I don't think it's necessary to read the first book in order to follow this one.

The audiobook narration was delightful.

I like (but didn't love) the first book in this series, but wasn't sure if the issues I had with it were debut book issues or if I just didn't connect with the author. All's Fair in Love and Treachery had a lot of the same elements that I didn't enjoy in the first book, so I think this is a not for me situation.

I love the vibes of a lady detective solving mysteries and having more agency over her life than we see in many historicals. What I struggle with is that the world felt so big and there were so many characters, I struggled to keep them straight. I also always felt like I was watcing a conversation between people who have known each other forever, and I have just met, and felt left out of much of the context.

While I do like cozy historical mysteries, I like mine to have as much focus on the romance as the mystery plot, so I think this series just reads more like a mystery than a romance, and I would recommend it to someone who enjoys that balance!

🎧I did enjoy this narrator, and thought she did an impressive job creating unique characterizations for each of the many characters!

This was in interesting read for me. Typically regency period reads for me are romance and while this had a tiny but it was more of a mystery. I really liked that the investigator was Lady Petra. I think there was a good amount of action along with political intrigue. Recommend if you're looking for a good mystery.

Thank you @macmillan.audio for the gifted audiobook.

I received the ebook and audiobook as Arcs from NetGalley. Thank you NetGalley!!

This book, like the first one, is a fun historical mystery with memorable characters that keep the story moving. The pros are definitely the overwhelming compassion and respect shown by the main character to everyone she meets, her tenaciousness and determination to solve the mystery and catch the bad guy, and the relationships among her friends. The cons - sometimes our FMC does the “I’m going to make a stupid decision that I know is dangerous, find myself in a perilous situation, and then act like I had it handled all along when someone jumps in to save me.” She runs right into situations that she should anticipate seeing as how she is this wonderful detective that solves murders and cracks open cases involving political subterfuge, spies, and well guarded secrets from the elite and wealthy. My other con is the openess of the female characters about their sex lives. I don’t doubt that it occurred but the amount of times they made statements about their sex lives in ear shot of so many others seems unrealistic. One of the characters seems to be doing an impression of Samantha from Sex in the City but in carriages and at balls.

The narrator was well spoken and fun to listen to. She provided just the right amount of sass and snark to our FMC and enough differentiation to the voices used for the other characters, that each was unique and distinguishable. 4 ⭐️

Loved this historical fiction book! I also absolutely love love loved that at the end it had more information about what was “real” and what was fictional.

Thanks, Macmillan Audio and Minotaur Books, for the ALC and arc!

I needed the second book when I finished the first book in the LADY PETRA INQUIRIES series. One year is much too long to wait, but I have to say the wait for ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND TREACHERY was worth it. Lady Petra returned strong, smart, and snarky, and I love her so much. She also gets the best book blurb, “BRIDGERTON meets Agatha Christie in this dazzling next installment in a captivating Regency-era mystery series with a feminist spin.” Are you excited about her books now?

The ending of the first book solved a case but left us with a devious cliffhanger that surprised me. I started reading as soon as I received the arc because I had to find out what would happen. I missed the audiobook and ended up pausing my read until I got the new audiobook because Eilidh Beaton is such a good narrator for this series!! I love her voice for Lady Petra! Plus, her side characters are excellent! Reading is a splendid decision, but I adore this series on audio.

I love how quirky this series is. It truly is BRIDGERTON meets Agatha Christie. We get the gorgeous dress descriptions, the events of the ton, the tea, and then we get the crime-solving - sometimes in the silliest of ways!

If you’re a fan of either of the previously mentioned series, this is a series for you!

All's Fair in Love and Treachery by Celeste Connally is an intriguing historical mystery with a strong, witty heroine. I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated admirably by Eilidh Beaton. The story is set in 1815 London and features sleuth Lady Petra Forsyth who is asked by Queen Charlotte to investigate the death of an orphanage matron who died under mysterious circumstances. Petra is plucky, independent, and determined. When I chose to listen to this book, I didn’t realize that it was the second book in the Lady Petra Inquiries series featuring Lady Petra, and I would have benefitted from listening to the first book because this story begins with Petra believing her current lover murdered her fiancé. It took me several chapters before I realized that the fiancé’s murder happened three years earlier. Despite this, I found the book clever and Petra charming, especially whenever she was around her lover, Duncan Shawcross. I look forward to seeing how that relationship develops over the next few books in the series.

"Since I have declared myself as never wishing to marry, I have often heard others saying I wish to be a nosy busybody instead. And that means few will think twice when I ask all the questions I like.”

Just like in Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man, Lady Petra Inquires #1, people, specifically men, underestimate the prowess of Lady Petra's sleuthing skills in the new All's Fair In Love And Treachery, Lady Petra Inquires #2, by the cleverly skilled author, Celeste Connelly.

While London is celebrating Napoleon's surrender at Waterloo, Lady Petra is having her own internal war. She's uncovered evidence that the death of her beloved fiance 3 years ago was not accidental but murder! Worse, the killer is likely her secret lover Duncan; who is nowhere to be found at the moment.

Only Petra would think the best way to take her mind off this new development is to honor the Queen's request to look into the death of the matron that ran the Asylum for Female Orphans. Like the board game Clue, the matron was struck in the head with a candlestick laying next to her. Her investigation finds not only unsavory happenings at the asylum but a plot to overthrow the monarchy.

All this turmoil is delightfully performed by voice actress Eilidh Beaton, who as in the book 1, gives Petra her spunk with a wink to us that she knows she's smarter than these scoundrels.

I adore reading and listening to this series. This writer encompasses not only a fine Agatha Christie type mystery but a sultry Bridgerton scandalous love affair. At the same time she lets us know that in a man's world a Lady knows All's Fair In Love and Treachery.

I received a free copy of this book/audiobook from the publishers via #NetGalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

This is book 2 in the Lady Petra Inquires series. They can be read as stand alone novels, but you get more from book 2 if you read book 1 first. The narrator for the audio book is Eilidh Beaton and she did a wonderful job. She also narrated the first book, Think Like a Lady, Act Like a Lord.

Set in 1815, Lady Petra is requested to investigate a murder at the all female's orphanage by Queen Charlotte. Meanwhile, her lover and childhood best friend, Duncan Shawcross, is also working from a different angle on the same case. They cross paths but do they work together or pull against one another for the investigation?

I enjoyed the setting and the characters. I loved both Lady Petra and Duncan from the first book. The sub-characters are really fun to get to know also. I hope there are more books with some of them having a larger part in the investigating (or perhaps as suspects again). The one thing that always unsettles me on books such as this, with an outspoken female, is wondering how realistic it would have been. Way back when, I don't believe there were a lot of moments where a woman was allowed to speak her mind in public, so sometimes I get a little hung up on that. If you like the regency era time, you will enjoy this book.

Thank you for the copy, this is my honest opinion. Please be aware of any trigger warnings, as your mental health is most important.

I received this audiobook excited to check it out, but in the end - it wasn't quite what I was looking for. The mystery and characters were charming, set in London. The atmosphere was perfect, but I could not get super hooked on this one and one thing might have been the pacing. This is perfect for those looking for a cozy mystery with a historical twist. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for this audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.

I enjoyed the first in the Lady Petra series - Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Lord. This follow up was a fun return to Lady Petra and the familiar cast of characters. I wouldn't recommend jumping in. While this is a standalone mystery, there are a lot of relational dynamics carried over from the first book.

The narration was good.

Thank you to #NetGalley and #MacmillanAudio for a free copy of #All'sFairInLoveAndTreachery by Celeste Connally. All opinions are my own.

A wonderful follow-up to Lady Petra’s first adventure in Act Like A Lady, Think Like a Lord - this mystery will appeal to fans of historical mystery AND regency romance. The audiobook narrator was excellent as well.

Although this seems to be the second book of a series, for me it was the first. I read this as an audiobook and my 3 stars are for both the writing and the narration.

I am a sucker for restoration age mysteries so of course I enjoyed that aspect. Unfortunately I felt the writing tried to 'add' to the historic age with overwritten, too flowery sentences that sometimes went against clarity. The mystery story was decent, although it did not take much to put two and two together, at least partially. The final picture turned out to be a bit silly and overcomplicated and some 'where the heck has this come from?' surprises. Lady Petra went on my nerves many times - and I feel that was not the intention of Ms. Connally (the author). Also, when we hear about the plotters' reasoning for their rebellion first time, one cannot help but feel much sympathy towards those declarations and find the good guys' actions unjustified. Celeste Connally must have noticed this too, as in the second half of the novel she did everything she could to convey the cruelty of the rioters, and of course we could not (and cannot) agree with the traitors' violence. So in the end we did get a bit of a satisfaction of the bad party's getting what they'd deserved.

The narration of the audiobook was also OK; felt the narrator overacted the roles sometimes, mainly with certain (female) characters.

The blurb said that this novel is 'Bridgerton meets Agatha Christie' which I don't agree with. Bridgerton - yes. Agatha Christie - strong no.

The audiobook of All's Fair in Love and Treachery by Celeste Connally was a courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review. Thanks so much to all for this opportunity.

The audiobook of the year! I've listened to a lot of audiobooks this year and have greatly enjoyed many of them, but this one instantly stood our from the pack. I was immediately drawn into the story, with the narrator adding greatly to the entertainment value of the novel. I was able to picture the setting and characters in my mind as the novel unfolded. The story itself was fantastic with plenty of intrigue, twist and turns along the way. A large, yet intimate cast of characters had me second-guessing everyone, making the unveiling of who did it a lot of fun. I will purchase this book in paperback to add to my collection and re-read. I highly recommend this title no matter how a reader prefers to digest it.

Oh, my goodness, what a fun listen "All's Fair in Love and Treachery" by Celeste Connally turned out to be.
The plot has so many rabbits to chase it could be confusing at times, but they come together nicely and in a satisfying way. There's all the wonderful things you can expect from a historical romp and mystery, treachery, royal plots, murder, betrayal, wrapped up in a world of high society and manners. The heroine, Petra, is practically asked to save the world, or at least the monarchy and a bunch of orphans, while solving the murder of her viscount fiance'. What a muddle!
Readers of Regency and Victorian mystery will enjoy this, as well as period romance readers who may enjoy lighter fare. The audiobook version has a good narrator (Eilidh Beaton) and I'd gladly listen to her perform other books.

This was a captivating Regency read with likeable characters, solid mysteries, and even a touch of humor that I do enjoy in my mysteries of any time frame. The depiction of the anticipation and celebration of the end of the Napoleonic Wars is both interesting and entertaining, and I do not recall a similar representation in my other books set in this period. Contrary to my general rule, I missed the first book in this series and was concerned that might inhibit my enjoyment of this book. It did not. Certainly, I still recommend starting with the first book in the series, but this book was enjoyable on its own. I like Lady Petra and Duncan as a couple, but do hope the relationship comes out of the shadows. We'll see, and I already look forward to their next adventure.

Eilidh Beaton does an excellent job of bringing these characters to life.
