A factually thick reference guide, The Cunning Craft is full of citations and clear research done to help shed some light on the history and lore behind “cunning folk” and the iterations & trials of those who came before them. There are some gems of rituals and art thrown in, but a very rich study text!

The Cunning Craft by Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold is a deeply insightful and thought-provoking exploration of traditional witchcraft and cunning folk practices. Frisvold masterfully weaves together historical context, folklore, and practical applications, offering readers a rich tapestry of knowledge that bridges the gap between ancient traditions and modern practices.

What sets this book apart is its depth of scholarship and respect for the subject matter. Frisvold approaches his topic with reverence and a clear dedication to authenticity, which is refreshing in a genre often diluted by superficial takes. His writing is dense yet poetic, inviting readers into a world of mystery and power while challenging them to think critically about their spiritual practices.

The book does require some foundational knowledge of occult traditions to fully appreciate its depth, which might make it less accessible to beginners. Additionally, some sections feel overly esoteric or meandering, which could frustrate readers seeking a more structured approach.

Overall, The Cunning Craft is an excellent resource for serious practitioners and students of traditional witchcraft. Its blend of historical insight and practical wisdom earns it a well-deserved 4 stars. Highly recommended for those seeking to deepen their understanding of cunning craft traditions!

This is a good option for those who are interested in the occult. This is something where you have to go in with an open mind as there may be some topics that you may not align with within your own practice.

Overall I believe this was a good book. It had a tendancy to come off as a little forceful/ heavy handed, but I was willing to get past that because of the wide cultural range that was presented within the book.

The Cunning Craft is a well-researched book that delves into the history of witchcraft and related beliefs. In my experience, many books on the topic stick to Europe, and the author goes above and beyond to highlight the topic as it relates different cultures and parts of the world. The tone was different than I expected, and as a skeptic who doesn’t believe in things such as the “witch bloodline,” I found it difficult to get behind some of the ideas when they were presented not just as beliefs or folklore, but factual. Ultimately, I think that’s why the book didn’t work for me—but I still suggest folks give it a try if they have an interest in the occult.
