No matter what era of professional basketball you consider yours, this book has something to offer you. It offers deep historical context for players who pioneered and changed the game and deserve to be remembered and celebrated, especially because there is little to no film of them to include in highlight reels. It also highlights players from the current day as well even though they likely still have many years of playing ahead of them.
Each entry does a great job of proving why the player deserves to be included with accompanying stats to further back up the choice. The authors also give a detailed overview of how they made their decisions, which I appreciated due to the inherent subjectivity of making a list like this. It does get dry if you read it for an extended period so I would recommend taking it an entry at a time. Use it as an opportunity to go online and see if you can find some highlights of their careers and/or interviews with people who saw them play or played with them.
I cannot recommend this book enough to lovers of basketball or even readers who are curious about the game as the bite-sized entries, while sometimes stat heavy, go down easy due to the high quality of the writing and obvious passion the authors have for the sport and those who have taken the game to the next level.
Jaime Lincoln Smith is an incredible narrator. The impact of his voice is electric, and you feel the passion and excitement of the authors as you listen. I highly recommend the audiobook to those who like to read using this format.
