I liked this short book highlighting the round dance of the Indigenous people, & the ribbon skirts. The text, story, drawings, color palette used......all contribute to a warm read....very nice. It's a story about a young boy & his Grandma participating in the round dance. It's a positive read (& a positive message that might actually deserve a 4 star rating!) & would be easy to share with a child. I appreciated the notes at the end, from the author & the artist, explaining their Native perspectives in bringing this book to life. It's a good offering!
I received an e-ARC from publisher Owlkids Books via NetGalley, affording me an opportunity to read it & post my own fair/honest review.

Such a beautifully illustrated book and such an incredible story to share with young people, especially young Indigenous and Two-Spirit people. I cannot recommend this enough!

Powerful message about celebrating who you are and honoring your heritage. Raven loves hearing the drum and joining the Round Dance. He watches the ribbon skirts swirl and asks his grandmother if he can have one too. His grandmother shares that she has never made one for a boy. Readers see her think about this and design a special one to give him. He is delighted to join the next dance and celebrate with everyone. Honoring heritage comes through clearly.

Raven hears the drums at the round dance and admires the ribbon skirts, wondering to his grandmother if boys can wear ribbon skirts. In this title we learn about ribbon skirts, the thought put into the colours and composition by the makers, and about the round dance. The notes from the author and illustrator at the end of the book encourage further reflection, perfect for prompting further discussion.
