Rachel's father was in prison for killing her mother. On the one hand she thought he was guilty, but on the other hand she had no idea. And then there were two men, John, who was a kept man by a wealthy politician, and Eric who was a journalist. John had been found dead in the cemetery, and Eric had disappeared. Rachel, who was a lawyer, was doing everything she could to get to the bottom of the dilemmas of the two men. There was an organized crime ring that had been operating that Rachel knew had something to do with everything. Rachel's friend, Selena, who was a police officer, was helping her get to the bottom of everything.
So this book was all about Rachel's investigation. The author had a way of hiding the truth until the very end. I had no idea if Rachel's father was guilty or not. And I really had no idea who was involved in the organized crime gang. The author's strategy was bulletproof. I very much enjoy stories where the author doesn't insult my intelligence by making the solutions obvious. And that was definitely the case with this saga. And this author did a stellar job with character development. She is someone whose other books I would like to read. I gave this one five stars.
The third Scottish thriller I have read by Morag Pringle. Touches on some emotive subjects and deals with them well. Thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for the chance to ARC this book.
This third in the Rachel McKenzie series does what it says in the title - gives a satisfying explanation and ending to what happened both to Rachel’s, mother, a John Doe found in a local cemetery and the story that a missing journalist was investigating. Rachel is a flawed, but compelling character, still trying to come to terms with her father’s actions. Selena MacDonald is now a Detective with CID in the Scottish Highlands, and is keen to prove herself to her colleagues. She almost hero worships a Rachel but also genuinely wants to help her. A really twisty tale, with an ending I hadn’t even thought of, always a bonus. Can’t wait for whatever this author writes next.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Thank you to NetGalley for my copy of The Final Truth by Morag Pringle.
Rachel McKenzie works as a prosecutor in the Scottish Highlands, investigating any death.
But along side this she is also trying to find what happened to her mother, and if her father is really to blame for her murder.
A great read.
Thank you for allowing me to review this book. I enjoyed the story as Rachel McKenzie searches for answers to the mystery surrounding her mother's death. The story is set in Scotland so the legal system is unfamiliar to me. Rachel works in the Fiscal Dept, whose job it is to look at sudden deaths and ensure that an investigation is carried out if deemed to be needed. This storyline runs alongside her investigation into the death of a body, that she found in the local cemetery. The characters are strong and well written. The scenery of Scotland and the Islands feels right, from my observations on television programmes. I can see this book making a good crime story for TV.
I recommend this book and the series to those who enjoy crime fiction.
It was lovely to catch up with Rachel McKensie and the wonderful setting of the Scottish Highlands. Rachel works for the Crown Office and Prosecutor Fiscal Service as a prosecutor in the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit (Known as Inverness's Death Unit by the team) in Inverness but they could be sent out further afield to investigate unexplained deaths. Rachel is keen to uncover the truth behind her Mother's death by looking into old case files. Rachel is called to a scene at a cemetery, where a body has been found. I love the dynamics of Rachel with Mags and Selena and how they look out for each other. Rachel is a feisty character, who will stop at nothing in getting to the truth. All the sub plots knitted together to a climatic ending with a twist that I never saw coming. More Rachel please.
Where has Rachel McKenzie been in my reading life? Although this is the third Rachel McKenzie book, it is my first and I was intrigued.
There is enough action and suspense, persons of interest, mood setting and character building to keep the reader entertained and guessing. Pringle makes the rugged Scottish countryside sing in a mysterious and slightly eerie way. As I turned the pages, I really could visualise what was happening, just like any good TV crime documentary. I would love to know how many of us would have accurately guessed the ending!
Thank you to Storm Publishing for providing me with an advanced reader's copy via NetGalley. These opinions are entirely my own. Now put on your detective's cap and see if you have better detective skills than me, because I did not make an accurate prediction!
I enjoyed this book but think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous two. Without knowing the back story I found some parts a bit confusing. I’m not sure that a prosecutor would be allowed to do as much investigation as Rachel did, but she’s a strong woman and I really liked her character. Selena too, they made a great partnership. Mags made me laugh at times and I think she merits a book where she is the main character! The writing was good, and I would read another book by this author. However I would describe it as a murder mystery rather than an unputdownable thriller. Thanks to NetGalley and Storm for the early uncorrected copy.
In this third instalment, Rachel McKenzie aids in an investigation that somehow involved her mother. Curious to find out the truth about her mother’s disappearance, and to solve the case of this latest victim found in the cemetery Rachel sets to work with Selena McDonald. Eventually her house is ransacked and her neighbour is attacked, which causes Rachel to take a moment and decide what to do. This female duo was wonderful to read, I enjoyed the many twists and turns. It would have been helpful to read the first two books prior to beginning this one. Thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for an advance copy. If you’re looking for a great thriller, look no further!
I received a free copy of, The Final Truth, by Morag Pringle, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is book number three in The Rachel McKenzie series. Rachel McKenzie lives in the Scottish Highlands as a prosecutor. Her past has caught up with her, the disappearance of her mother. Such a thrilling read, you dont know who to trust in this book, parents or neighbors.
THE FINAL TRUTH - I had forgotten I had read The Highland Dead, which I found average and difficult to read. TFT is better with the story telling, with good story lines and interesting characters. Selena is my favorite character and she added to the fiber if the book. Source: Netgalley. 4*
THE HIGHLAND DEAD - I had a difficult time reading this book, not because it was bad, but extremely wordy with too much unimportant details. Although bored through much of the story, the basic story lines and the characters are interesting. Source: Netgalley. 3*
I was excited to read this book based on the blurb and it did not disappoint. The characters and the storyline kept my attention throughout the whole book from start to finish and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Cannot wait to read more from this author.
Rachel McKenzie is a lawyer in the Fiscal's Office and based in Inverness. She all too often gets too heavily involved with the policing side of things which earns her no brownie points with either the Fiscal's office or the police. This time the body is found in a cemetery and considered to be either a natural or drug induced death. Rachel ferrets around and finds a link to the murder of her mother although her father is in prison for that murder. There's a lot more about Rachel's background and character and, as usual she manages to travel a lot around the Highlands and Islands on business. Descriptions of these are evocative and realistic. Now DC, Selena MacDonald aids and abets her although not always officially shall we say. Both do things that they shouldn't and which would lead to dismissing of evidence in real life. But, it's a novel. 3.5* rounded up. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
The final truth is the third book featuring Rachel McKenzie, Rachel is a Lawyer working as a fiscal in Scotland, not that she spends a lot of time in the office as she has a habit of finding trouble and getting involved with police investigations, the idea is a little far fetched but the characters are relatable and I like the underlying story of Rachel’s mothers murder and her killer father.
This is a great series so far and I look forward to reading book 4.
The third book in the Rachel Mc Kenzie series is another well written and thought out mystery. I really love this series, set in the north of Scotland, which gripped me right from the start and had me hooked until the end. There are twists and turns throughout the book as Rachel finds some answers to the death of her mother and the pace is steady throughout. I love the characterisation, especially Mags who has a heart of gold! I highly recommend this series and I do hope there is more to come from Rachel. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
This is really well written with memorable characters. The plot is gritty and the characters match, from drug taking, gangs and running away from abusive and unfriendly homes at a young age. Rachel herself has an uncomfortable past and this is exposed a little bit more in this book. The murder itself is less central to the plot as the unpacking of the people and the mystery around it with the investigation travelling across scotland and sharing some amazing and beautiful areas and islands. Hang on tight in the beginning chapters as a lot happens with a lot of characters introduced, the settle in for a great read.
The Final Truth by Morag Pringle is a recommended investigative crime novel, highly for those who have read the previous two books in the Rachel McKenzie series.
A body is found in a local cemetery and the case comes to the attention of Rachel McKenzie who is a prosecutor in the Scottish Highlands. The victim has a connection to the case Rachel's mother was investigating before she disappeared and presumed dead. Rachel's father was convicted and imprisoned for her murder. Hoping she can discover the truth, Rachel enlists the help of detective constable Selena MacDonald, and takes a look at the original files. She quickly discovers someone is still keeping track of her actions and she may be in danger.
This is a well-written, carefully plotted, and even-paced investigative mystery that carefully follows clues while uncovering connections and more information. There are some twists and surprises along the way and the setting in Scotland is definitely an integral part of the plot. The surprising and shocking ending endangers Rachel while providing closure about what happened to her mother. Those who appreciate strong female main characters will appreciate this novel.
Anyone who enjoyed the first two books will want to read The Final Truth for the closure it provides. Starting with this third book of the series did leave me feeling that I was missing out on some vital information, but enough background was provided that I never felt lost or confused. 3.5 rounded up. Thanks to Storm Publishing for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.
The review will be published on Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
4* Very readable despite my not understanding the Scottish terms or legal and policing systems.
This is pretty well written with a female lead who's not on her first outing but I didn't have any trouble getting into the tale. There's some decent sleuthing and characters who're committed to their roles and doing the right things, plus enough back story and intrigue that grab your attention and keep you reading.
I enjoyed the tale almost to the end but the ending itself was a little bit too Scooby Doo, complete with the 'if it wasn't for you pesky kids' talk from a bad guy who insisted on yadda, yadda, yadda despite a chartered plane apparently waiting for them and their 'gang'. It took away from the urgency of the ending but did tie in with what'd happened to another bad guy, so I was sort of OK with it as I was getting some answers.
Is like to read more, especially as it's set in Scotland and the lead detective likes to mountain climb. She's got an actual like outside of the job, which is refreshing.
ARC courtesy of NetGalley and Storm Publishing, for my reading pleasure.
Thank you to netgalley, the author and publisher for an early reading copy of "The Final Truth". This is the third book in the Rachel McKenzie mystery series. It's another exciting fast paced thriller as Rachel closes in on the truth about her mother's death. I thoroughly enjoyed the twists, turns and sub-plots and did not guess the ending. Hopefully this will not be the last we read about Rachel, Selena and of course the brilliant Mags.
Unputdownable and kept me on the edge of my seat
This book kept me engaged and wanting more
I love the Rachel McKenzie series, She is a stubborn lawyer who will take any risk to uncover the truth and gets justice for those deceased.
Rachel digs deeper to find the truth about her father in prison who is convicted for the murder of her mother’s death, alongside some random murders which are all connected. Loved the unpredictable twists and turns
