Another fun addition to the Kayla Miller series. This is, of course, the spin off series, but there are overlaps as characters span both collections.
I think that the story does a good job of covering a lot of challenges for middle schoolers, including friendship. challenging authority, school, bullies, and social media. The prank war really starts because Sawyer and Trent want to win a prize that is being offered by a streamer. And it definitely shows how these social media stars may not really think through their contests to the consequences, because Sawyer and Trent definitely suffer for their "art." The fact that they enter into the war with Nat, who is probably the character I have liked the least throughout this story was both good and bad. For me, it was good because she was able to really deliver on return pranks. But it was bad because, for the most part, she escaped from any punishment except maybe at the very end. Trent and Sawyer got pulled into the war because Nat just wouldn't let things lie, and yet they were the ones doing all the clean up and getting teachers angry. It drives me nuts to see someone who is a bully or comes across as such being able to fly under the radar because they act innocent with adults. It's also very much something I have told my children to watch out for in life: when you know something is going to happen that will be bad, get away. Tell an adult, but make sure you are away from the situation as much as you can be. That sort of thing.
In the end, I feel like Trent learned most from the whole situation. Or maybe he learned faster. Sawyer, as a result, was the one of the duo who drove me the most nuts. He treated his friends poorly; his jokes pushed the limit; and he really didn't listen to anyone until he got in deep trouble.
The characters are, as always, well drawn and well presented. And you get enough of Trent and Sawyer to feel for them, to be annoyed with them, and to distinguish between them. And that is hard to do in a graphic novel.
I still prefer the main Click series, but Besties is definitely fun. And you don't have to have read these in any particular order which is nice. I find Click is more chronological. The first Besties is probably still my favourite.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was so fun! It was a great continuation of the besties series. The graphics were great and adorable.
This book gave a good lesson not to mess around with your friends. I was expecting the girl besties at first so I was surprised to venture in this journey with the boys. I love how the world comes into one and the click is also in the book! I would definitely recommend this to children
Besties: Prank War is another adorable graphic novel in the Click universe by Kayla Miller. Trent and Sawyer are 2 best friends determined to win a social media contest by performing an epic prank. I really liked this one. It has the awesome illustrations & friendships in all of the graphic novels in this universe. I really liked the way pranks were shown & that the victims feelings were shown afterwards. I think it made a great point that funny pranks are only funny if everyone can laugh.
Thanks to NetGalley, Kayla Miller, and Harper Collins for the chance to read and review. My opinions are my own.
When I saw that this book was about pranks, I wondered if I wanted to read it at all, though I love the Besties series. And because I loved everything that has come out of that series, I plunged in, despite thinking the very idea of pranking people abhorrent to the highest degree.
The good thing about this story is that despite the two boys loving to prank, the narrative showed the bad that can come with it, and how it hurts others, which was good. And while I know that there is no way to stop pranking int he world of people who want to get seen on social media, at least this story was very clear that the people who were pranking and being pranked did not like it.
And once I realized where this was going, I sat back and enjoyed what happened to the prankers. It also helped when the teachers and parents started to notice too.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book is coming out on the 3rd of March.
