I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for a ARC copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Angel of Water & Shadow by Tory Guyon is a beautifully crafted tale set in the coastal world of Santa Cruz, California, where the magic of water and shadow intertwine with the struggles of self-discovery, destiny, and love. This book offers readers a deep, immersive dive into a supernatural journey that feels both refreshingly original and universally relatable.
The setting of Santa Cruz becomes more than just a backdrop; it’s a living, breathing part of the story. Tory Guyon vividly captures the coastline’s beauty, the dense redwood forests, and the small-town atmosphere, creating an environment that feels charged with magical energy. Each place, from the wild shores to shadowy groves, mirrors the characters' inner battles, adding a layer of richness to every scene. I felt completely drawn into Santa Cruz, a world where reality meets the mystical with just enough familiarity to ground the magical elements, making the supernatural feel eerily possible.
At its core, this story explores themes of identity, inner strength, and the cost of embracing one’s true power. The concept of water and shadow takes on a symbolic quality, representing the fluidity of human emotions and the secrets we keep hidden. The struggle between embracing light and darkness, especially within oneself, is an ongoing theme that feels fresh and impactful. This narrative expertly navigates the line between fantasy and reality, illustrating how confronting fears can transform us while hinting at the powerful forces lurking beneath the surface of everyday life.
River Harlow, the protagonist, is a character that feels incredibly authentic and relatable. Her connection to water is more than just magical; it’s a part of who she is. River's journey through grief and discovery shapes her character in ways that feel real, even as she navigates supernatural forces. I was deeply moved by her vulnerability, strength, and the way she wrestles with the weight of her responsibilities. Her connection to water isn’t just a power—it’s a reflection of her need for clarity, peace, and resilience. Watching her evolution as she learns to wield her gifts is a journey that pulls at the heartstrings.
Ryder, River's enigmatic companion, brings depth and tension to the story. His role as a shadowy figure adds complexity and a touch of darkness, yet his loyalty and dedication create a contrast that makes him incredibly compelling. The chemistry between River and Ryder is palpable; their interactions are charged with tension, mystery, and a growing bond that feels natural and earned. Ryder’s complexity, especially as he grapples with his sense of duty and inner demons, adds a rich layer to the story, making him the perfect counterpoint to River’s journey.
Guyon's storytelling is vivid and poetic, with descriptions that transport you straight into the scene. The world-building is seamless, balancing magical elements with the familiar coastal town setting. The pace is just right, alternating between moments of intense action and introspective scenes that allow the characters to breathe and grow. I also loved how well the angelic and shadow lore was woven into the narrative; it felt fresh, adding depth without overshadowing the characters’ emotional journeys.
While the lore is fascinating, there are moments when it felt a bit dense, slightly slowing down the narrative’s flow. At times, I wanted more development for some of the secondary characters who were intriguing but could have added even more dimension to the world if explored further. These minor points, however, didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment and investment in the story.
My final thoughts ..
Angel of Water & Shadow is a gripping, deeply emotional journey that will resonate with fans of urban fantasy and supernatural drama. Tory Guyon has crafted a story with characters you’ll care about, a world you’ll want to explore, and themes that linger long after you turn the last page. For anyone looking for a blend of mystical intrigue and heartfelt character development, this book is a must-read. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!
