I didn’t read the synopsis until later so I didn’t know this was like an extended version of an obituary. That’s kinda fun.
Overall it was a good memoir it was just kinda long I lost interest every once in a while and it felt a little repetitive. I did like that it encompassed a lot of the family in the memoir and didn’t necessarily put people in a great light. People felt messy in this messy memoir that I think that is really great. Just like probably cut the 10 hr audio to like 6 1/2 and it would have been more enjoyable.
The author narrates and has a great reading voice.
Thanks to netgalley and hachette audio for an alc
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was hilarious! He truly made a funny book even better with his expressiveness and timing. Loved all the different stories of Ann’s life and his mom. Highly recommend this one but definitely listen to the audio!
An entertaining book with an irresistible narrator.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received a ARC of the audio version of Dirtbag Queen from NetGalley and the publisher, Hachette Audio in exchange for a truthful review.
The narrator is personable and humorous with a Southern drawl. The author wrote his memoir and told all about his mother, René. You can tell she is a hero in Corren's mind. Stories about Corren's childhood include telling all about how they learned he is gay (Donnie Osmond had something to do with it), all about the difficult relationship he had with his stepdad and growing up in the 80's.
It is an entertaining story, although sometimes the mother-worship gets a little tiring. Overall, I would recommend it to someone who is looking for a quick read.
This is not a memoir like any I've read before. It's a hands-down warts and all, nothing held back and nothing left out story of the life of Andy Corren's mother larger than life mother, Renay.
I'm sure there are other people in this world who would recognise women like Renay but I don't know any. I'd like to though. She sounds like the sort of woman who wouldn't put up with any BS but would fight her (and her childrens') corner to her last breath.
I listened to the audio version and I'm sure the print version is fine but I loved this. Andy Corren narrates and I'm not sure anyone else could have done the job justice. It's obvious from the get-go that he adored his mother whilst still recognising her failings. Noone's perfect.
Id say the reason I really enjoyed this memoir was because it was crazy and shocking but ultimately joyful.
Definitely recommended. I can't comment on the print version but the audio is wonderful.
Thankyou to Netgalley and Hachette Audio for the audio advance review copy.
Dirtbag Queen is a tribute to Andy's (Ann) mom, expressed in his unique and colourful style. What a truly spectacular memoir! I have a deep appreciation for autobiographies, especially when they are performed by the author, and Andy Corren does an incredible job with Dirtbag Queen. It's a fun listen.
This memoir celebrates Renay's legacy: she was funny, a bowling alley mafia queen, and an adversary of Julia Quinn's novels; most importantly, she was the mother of Ann and his motley crew of brothers. It's a story of love and forgiveness, as well as a celebration of a woman who "didn't cook, didn't clean, and was lousy with money, but who excelled at dyeing her red roots, getting weekly manicures, telling filthy jokes, pier fishing, rolling joints, and buying dirty magazines."
Thank you to Andy Corren, Hachette Audio | Grand Central Publishing, and NetGalley for providing the eARC of "Dirtbag Queen." This book will be available for purchase on January 14, 2025.
Oh my god. This narrator is incredible, first of all—the perfect choice for this book. I loved and hated every character which is also perfect because this is REAL LIFE, this is THE SOUTH. We love to see a gay story about his momma!
A tribute to his mom in his wild crazy way with words. Mr. Corren was the narrator of his book and made it a fun listen as he pretty much was all over the place very much like the book.
Poor and living all over the city to make ends meet another wild ending in the lives of all involved in the life of Andy's mother. Pick it up if you need to be entertained.
What a simply spectacular memoir! I love autobiographies even more when they're performed by the author, and Andy Corren does an incredible job with Dirtbag Queen
The précis describes Dirtbag Queen as a memoir for Corren's "loud, filthy‑minded (and filthy‑mouthed)" mother, but believe me this is very much an autobiography of the author. This book is filled with details of growing up in a wild and wacky family, and coming out during a unique time and geographical place in America.
Dirtbag Queen is beautifully crafted and quite intimate, and I really enjoyed Andy Corren's witty, clever writing style. I'm dying to see what else he's published. Plus, his performance in the audio version is absolutely marvelous!
If this cover doesn't grab your attention LOL I don't know what will!
I listened to the audio only after reading the book. The author is also the narrator of this funny, heartwarming, memoir. If you enjoy the book, this audio makes it even better. I adore Andy’s accent and the fun salacious way he describes how he’s sitting in the waterbed with his mom, Renay, as she’s flipping the pages slowly as she is reading the converted, Julia Quinn’s latest steamy novel and Ann (Andy) has to wait for mom to finish it. Knowing her son is dying for that book, she will savor every page and read it in her own time, flicking wrist as she turns the pages and knowingly irritating Ann. The foot massages are hysterical!
This memoir celebrates Renay's legacy: funny, bowling alley mafia queen, and adversary of the Julia Quinn novels, and most of all, mother to Ann and his motley crew he calls his brothers, regardless that she didn’t cook or clean but she still taught you things about life.
