My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Tears On Her Grave’, book 24 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series written by D K Hood, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Two bodies are found floating down the river caused by the excessive flooding around Black Rock Falls. The bodies are identified as college students Abby Jaye and Cole Peters who went missing at Halloween twelve years ago after meeting up with friends at Whispering Caves. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane speak with their friends but their stories cause Jenna and Kane to be suspicious as they appear to have agreed beforehand what to say.
‘Tears On Her Grave’ begins with a twelve-year-old cold case that progresses to homicide when a masked man wielding an axe brutally attacks his victims in Black Rock Falls. I didn’t feel the tension that’s normally present in Ms Hood’s wonderful novels but apart from that it’s still an exciting thriller that has drama, twists, and an increasing body count, with threats to the lives of those working for the sheriff. Circumstances are changing for Jenna and Kane when their new baby comes along and I very much look forward to reading more of them in book 25.
This was the first book I have read by D.K. Hood. Tears on Her Grave had me on the edge of my seat from the first page. I really didn't want to put it down but as always other things got in the way. There were many twists and turns in this story that they keep you guessing on what is going to happen next. If you enjoy reading mystery's, thrillers and a book that you just can't put done. I highly recommend D.K. Hood stories. The characters are wonderful and such a great read.
Thank you to NetGalley, D.K. Hood, and Bookouture for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Following heavy rain and flooding, two mummified bodies are washed up on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls. Sheriff Jenna Alton, Deputy Dave Kane and the rest of their team find themselves investigating a cold case rather than an active serial killer case. Two college students went missing on Halloween night twelve years ago; it was believed that they had run away together but the bodies tell a different story. With the friends that were with the couple that night all repeat the same story the team have to wait for one of them to decide that they can't keep the secret any longer.
I've read all the books in this series and this was another fabulous instalment.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D K Hood for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
When a heavy storm hits Black Rock Falls, it brings a trail of destruction. Sheriff Jenna Alton is more than prepared, but she never expects to find college sweethearts Abby Jaye and Cole Peters floating among the wreckage in the river. Missing for twelve years following an end-of-school party, no clues were ever found and the couple’s devastated parents gave up hope that their beloved children would ever come home. Could the fraternity pin clutched tightly in Abby’s hand be the key to finding out what really happened that night?
As Jenna and her deputy David Kane speak to the pair’s classmates, they’re struck by how startlingly similar their stories are. They all say that nothing suspicious happened that night—they describe the open fire, the cans of cheap beer and the way Abby and Cole seemed totally in love before they disappeared. Their accounts are word-for-word identical, Jenna suspects the friends are keeping a deadly secret, and she’s determined to find out what it is.
Back in Black Rock Falls, this time with Abby and Cole being unburied by a storm. This was dripping with tension from the beginning, a little gruesome at times, but deliciously spooky. I got hooked from the very beginning and stayed glued to my Kindle until it was all over. Another winner from D.K. Hood! 5⭐
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy. This is my honest opinion of the book.
Really enjoying the Kane and Alton series and this edition was suspenseful consistently through the whole book. Kept wondering was was coming next. Plenty of twists. Great characters. What more do you need. Definitely will read the next one. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
Another excellent read in the Kane & Alton series. I always get excited when I see a new D.K.Hood book as I know it will be just as amazing as the previous ones in the series. A cold case from 12 years ago rears its head and Dave & Jenna go all out to solve it. A real page turner I couldn’t read quick enough. It may be book 24 in this series but it grips from the first page just as much as book 1. I highly recommend this book/series and author you will not be disappointed I can guarantee it.
After two mummified bodies come floating down the mountain in rainwaters, Kane and Jenna are going to solve the cold case from years ago. Their questioning stirs up a group of individuals who were together on the night of the murders. Could the whole group be guilty? This was a good story, and I found myself excited to uncover the next clues!
As always Jenna and Dave are working at solving in a murder, this one just happens to be twelve years old. That doesn't stop them from putting their all into it. But can Dave keep Jenna safe and healthy while doing so?
Torrential rainfall causes mudslides and washes out of a cave the bodies of two college students who disappeared without a trace twelve years earlier. Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband, David Kane, interview other students who were at the Halloween gathering when the two students disappeared, but find it too convenient that they all give nearly identical accounts of the evening. When one of their group is murdered, the race is on to determine the guilty person, or persons, before any more lives are lost.
I have not read any of the other titles in the series, but this book stood alone just fine. The mystery was suspenseful and well crafted, but the dialog didn't always seem authentic. Nevertheless, this was an enjoyable read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review "Tears On Her Grave", the 24th book in the massively entertaining and genuinely suspenseful Detectives Kane And Alton series by D.K. Hood.
"Everything appeared to be normal, but nothing was normal in Black Rock Falls." As always, things are not what they seem, and something is always bubbling up under the surface. Literally, in this case.
As aa result of a combination of events - seismic activity, snowfall, avalanches and runoff from the mountains, a 12-year old missing persons case immediately becomes one of murder, and the perpetrator or perpetrators have had a long time to come up with alibis. But, as the saying goes, three can keep a secret - if two are dead. When you multiply that by 4, it's doubtful that the secret will remain that for long.
And suddenly, there are more bodies! Someone very much wants to keep the true story of what happened that Halloween night on the mountain and in the cave a secret, and will go to any lengths to do that.
The combined forces of investigators Sheriff Jenna Alton and Chief Deputy Dave Kane, ME Shane Wolfe, Forensic Anthropologist Norrell, Deputies Rio and Rowley are on the case and determined to break the wall of silence - along with the remarkably identical stories from that fateful night - that the suspects have erected around themselves.
Recommended for fans of the series and fans of the genre.
When two bodies were found floating in the river after a mudslide in the mountains, it was soon revealed that the two were college sweethearts that were reported missing twelve years ago. As Kane and Alton were searching for answers they discovered that the victims were partying on the mountains with a few of their friends and other college kids, when they vanished. This is book 24 in the series and still a very good series, that kept me guessing. Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for this arc.
Another great instalment in the Kane and Alton series. A cold case involving missing college students rears its head and those missing students are at the centre of it.
Somehow, I always enjoy the college aspect, especially years on for those being interviewed. D.K. Hood did it really well.
There was no way I could pick who was involved in the crimes in this one but it all came together very well. For a short period, there was some hold your breath action more than usual for PPs and it worked well.
Would recommend, may work better a tiny bit better with having read book 23 (immediately prior). PD: 17 December 2024.
Many thanks to Debra for another fantastic D.K. Hood buddy read - be sure to check out her review.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing this book, with my honest review below.
I hadn’t read a D.K. Hood novel before, let alone one from the Detectives Kane and Alton series, but seeing the absolute adoration many had for this series and for her writing, I was excited to read Tears on Her Grave. The premised was absolutely fascinating to start, with two teenagers found mummified after a flood and Sheriff Jenna and Deputy Kane trying to solve their cold cases. On top of that, the writing was well done, giving me enough background so that I didn’t feel like half the book was obviously catching me up on the background of this extensive series while also not leaving me feeling left behind for not having read it.
My opinion is that I completely understand the adoration after having read this, and look forward to all the new books that are going to be added to my to read list. If Tears on Her Grave is an indication, I’ll be getting deeper into a series that treats its characters with care while also ramping up the tension masterfully. The mysteries in this were especially well done, with Jenna and Kane’s relationship acting as a nice break to the mysteries of the teens, why the old Sheriff had no records about them going missing, and why their friend group was hiding ‘what they did’ (and what actually happened).
If you haven’t read D.K. Hood’s books and enjoy a strong thriller, you’ll really love this one. And if you are familiar, then I’m guessing you’ll devour this as soon as you can!
This is book #24 of the Kane & Alton series. Whilst it can be read as a standalone book, I would recommend reading the books in series order for better understanding of the characters back stories. We are back in Black Rock Falls, the weather is bad and has caused flooding through some of the cave systems in the area. When the mummified remains of two college students are washed from their final resting place in one of the caves, it's down to Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane to find out what happened to them.
I love this series, and whilst we are 24 books in the stories are still just as gripping as ever! A lot has happened in Jenna and Dave's lives over the past few books and we're still travelling that journey with them throughout this one. I can't wait to see what happens in future books with them. The investigation into the discovery of the two bodies had me hooked and once I started I couldn't put it down. As in previous books, there are lots of suspects to think about and I couldn't work out who the killer was until it was revealed.
The book was fast paced, full of tension and suspense and just that little bit gruesome! All of the regular characters are back, although we are missing FBI agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter. However, we do get to meet Johnny Raven again and I really hope he's back in the next book to see if anything happens between him and Emily! This was a fabulous read and I loved all the twists and turns! I say it every time, but I really wouldn't want to live in Black Rock Falls with all the serial killers it attracts! However, I'm very happy to drop in every now and then and meet up with, what feels like, old friends! This was an action packed serial killer thriller, and I'd definitely recommend!
Another excellent instalment in this series featuring Kane and Alton. A mysterious discovery after many years, lots of twists and turns. An excellent read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
12 years ago two teens disappeared on Halloween. Now their bodies have turned up in black rock falls. With the group of friends they’d been with repeating the same story word for word, sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane have their work cut out for them. When old friends turn up dead the connection to the old case needs investigating.
I can’t express how much I love this series. This was another fast paced, exciting story. The characters are so well written that I feel I know them in real life! I’m finding myself excited to meet Jenna and Dave’s baby! Another psychopath killer in town and what a great amount of suspense. I was kept guessing right up until the end. The introduction of Raven as a permanent character is great, and looking forward to reading more about him. As always I read this one too quickly and now I need to wait (not so) patiently for the next one. I can’t recommend this one, and all of them enough! Must read!
Addictive, captivating, tense, atmospheric and hard to put down! I loved so many things about Tears on Her Grave. I enjoyed how this mystery was told through dual timelines and seeing the events of the past and then jumping back to the present day. I am a big fan of books with friends sharing dark secrets and D.K. Hood delivered and then some! This book played out like a movie in my mind with the detailed descriptions, wonderfully drawn characters, the drama, and the hunt for a killer!!!!
A destructive storm has hit Black Rock Falls and the bodies of Abby Jaye and Cole Peters, two teens who have been missing for twelve years have been unearthed and found floating in the river. Their disappearance has been a mystery until now. In Abby's hand is a fraternity pin. Sheriff Jenna Alton and deputy David Kane are on the case. Woohoo!
I loved being back in Black Rock Falls with Alton and Kane. I love their relationship, their banter, and the family life they have creating. Jenna is pregnant which gave this book a little bit of a "Fargo" feel while reading. Plus, it was a joy seeing more of Alton and Kane's private life and plans for their family.
I enjoyed the mystery and how the investigation took place. The college friends of Abby and Cole are scrambling as Alton and Kane begin questioning them about what they remember from the night their two friends went missing. It was nice to see Johnny Raven and his K9 taking part in the investigation as well.
This book was brimming with atmosphere, tension, secrets, and danger. There is a killer out there who will stop at nothing to avoid being caught. This made for some gruesome and tense scenes which had my pulse pounding and my fingers turning the pages!
Wonderfully written, addictive, atmospheric and hard to put down! I cannot wait to read more books in this pulse pounding and thrilling series!

Tears on Her Grave is the 24th book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood and it did not disappoint! This book can be enjoyed as a standalone mystery or as part of the series. I feel like each book gets better than the previous one!
This book was fast paced and had me on the edge of my seat. I did not want to stop reading this book! I love the characters and I found the story to be absolutely captivating! This book was intense and I loved every minute of it!!! There were so many moments was I was scared for the characters that I’ve come to love.
I highly recommend reading Tears on Her Grave!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Another brilliant plot when the team investigate a cold case of a couple college students who disappeared 12 years ago on Halloween.
This has a different vibe to it than the others. There seems to be a more intimate setting with Jenna and Dave showing feelings and love about their future as they go forward. As they investigate the homicides of the college students Dave never wavered about his concerns of Jenna being 7 months pregnant.
The story moves quickly keeping you full invested as they close in on what took place that night in the forest. It was great to see Johnny Raven (the newest deputy) being introduced again in the mix with his K9. He is setting up to train more K9s which will be a fantastic addition to future books! I can’t wait to see more of him! Hmmm…does Emily (Wolfe’s daughter) and Johnny feel a spark of interest?
Looking forward to the next book!
this was a strong twenty-fourth entry in the Detectives Kane and Alton series, it had that concept that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall concept of this thriller. The characters were everything that I was expecting and enjoyed the overall feel of this world. I enjoyed the way D.K. Hood wrote this and left me wanting to read more in this world.
