firstly, thank you to the publisher for an alc!

this was a great addition/prequel to the summoner's circle series - i feel a little more connected to the characters this time around, versus when i read evocation. the audio narrator did a great job as well.

overall, i truly enjoy anything that s.t. gibson writes.

đź’«Rhys, Moira and David:

This happens before Evocation and it hints at a few things about Rhys, David and Moira that make sense now.
I believe Rhys was lying to himself about David (the lie that there was nothing going on). Moira knew that their (Rhys & David) story wasn’t over even before the cute throuple became a throuple.
David, as innocent as he claims to be in this story, is intentional with his words and actions (i.e. the photo).
I like David in this story but only because I know what happens later on.

I listened to the audiobook. It didn’t scare the crap out of me like Evocation (I did sleep with the lights on for a night) did but I appreciate the backstory. There’s a reason why this specific one was told and I think we will find out in her upcoming book Ascension.

This #ARC #Audiobook of #OddSpirits was sent by #NetGalley and #TantorAudio. Publication date: November 12, 2024.

What do a chaos witch, a magician, and a haunted home have in common? Sometimes a little too much. This is a prequel to the book Evocation, and serves as a beautifully enclosed story of a couple who practice two very different forms of magic, and whether or not they can reconcile that as they build their lives together. This novella is short and impactful, full of emotion, intrigue, and moral quandaries that make for an incredible starting point to the world of Evocation.

I listened to the first book in this series earlier this year, and this short story details an incident between two of the characters that is referenced in that book. It was interesting to hear it play out! Tied in nicely to the first book.

The sex scenes were a little rogue tbh, and ending the last chapter with one is a choice for sure. I don't know if I realized this was an explicit book and I can't say I remember any from the other book? Very possible I've just forgotten. Not sure they added much to the story honestly.

I have a similar complaint that I had to the first one in that a book about magic there's definitely more in this story but still very little detail on it. Would love to hear more about the varied magic practices and ceremonies.

Thanks NetGalley for the audiobook!

Coming from just finishing Evocation a couple days ago, this is the perfect read to see more of Rhys and Moira together in their haunted house romance. We still get a glimpse of David and establishes the relationships going forward into Evocation but this gives more clarity to the events mentioned but not fully described. I appreciated having more time with these characters, their love for each other is inspiring. I don't think you need to read Evocation first to enjoy this little novella seeing this was released in 2018, but having the novel to go with this novella made it a better experience for me seeing I knew who these characters were. I think you could read this first or Evocation first and it won't matter either way, if you read Odd Spirits first you just have more context of the backstory going into Evocation but isn't as necessary. If you love these characters, if you love their love and romance, I do recommend.

I like this world. I like getting the first peeks into Rhys and Moira's relationship. Even just this small tidbit of a book, was entertaining. Still hoping we'll get a full book 2 on their developing relationships.

I went into this audiobook expecting a heavy focus on the occult aspect of this story however while this was ever present it seemed as the central focus was issues within a marriage.
The exploration of fear, shame, guilt, lack of communication etc. manifesting as a metaphysical entity was really quite interesting. I felt a connection to the story as avoiding issues in a relationship can feel like skirting a demon in the room at times.
I felt Moira's character was abrasive and I didn't relate well to her at all however I found Rhys to be endearing.
The narrator is well spoken with an easy to listen to voice.
Overall a clever novella and an enjoyable listening experience.

Odd spirits is a great short story to go along with evocation and honestly I’m very glad they changed the narrator for this one cause I kind of disliked the performance of Oscar Reyes in Evication. I am very happy to say that I’m totally right about hating Reese because come on!! They just hated David for being right, their malice towards him in evocation was totally unwarranted!!!

Rating: 3.5 stars, generously rounded up to 4 for the quality of audio.

Thank you to the publisher and Tantor Audio for providing me with an audio ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed the narration and the cozy, atmospheric feel of this novella! It was short enough to finish in one sitting, which is always a plus. I’d like to commend Tantor and Joe Hempel for the high-quality narration -truly impressive, I have over 500 audiobooks in my personal collection so I am always on the lookout for good narration!

The story focuses on two main characters from the Summoners Circle series, Moira and Rhys. I read this as a standalone before book one, and it worked perfectly on its own.

Although the story involves the arcane arts, in my opinion it primarily explores themes of marriage and personal growth. The portrayal of young marriage felt realistic, highlighting each character’s flaws, and I found the commentary on the challenges they faced to be intriguing. As the novella progressed, it became clear that all three main characters (Moira, Rhys, and David) are deeply flawed, which seemed to be another key point of the story. However, I found Moira’s character a bit too abrasive, which impacted my enjoyment.

In terms of rating - I deducted 1.5 stars because I felt the story could have benefited from even more depth, and Moira was portrayed as somewhat shrewish, which I personally don’t enjoy in a female main character.

Overall, this novella is ideal for readers seeking a low-stakes, and an engaging story to read between more intense books. It made for an excellent palate cleanser!

This was a very fun and quick read. I actually ended up enjoying this more than Evocation.

I really enjoyed seeing more from Moira and Rhys and the depth it added to their characters seeing them early on in their marriage. I think it will really enhance the future books in the series now.

The narrator was very clear and I really enjoyed reading this via audiobook.

Thank you to Tantor Audio and Netaglley for this audio copy to review.

This was a very cute story! I loved the connection of the house to the couple — it really felt like pathetic fallacy reimagined. I love the authors writing so this definitely was no exception. It was quick and well paced — not much more was needed!

I’m excited for the next books in this series! This audiobook was very well done. I felt connected to the characters and liked the intonation.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my review.

I had already read this as an ARC, but since I listen to most books as well as read them I wanted to check this one out so that I can review it solely on audio.

This is a really good audiobook overall. Joe Hempel did a great job, and the production quality was excellent. I appreciated the accent for Moira, and found the book enjoyable to listen to.

I found myself a little disappointed that it wasn't narrated by the same person as Evocation, which I have to say I preferred a bit.

Thank you so much RBmedia and NetGalley for the ALC!

Odd Spirits by S.T. Gibson is a charming novella that mixes magic, romance, and the supernatural. Newlyweds Moira, a tarot-reading witch, and Rhys, a ceremonial sorcerer, face spooky challenges when a mischievous spirit disrupts their home. Their different magical styles and the appearance of Rhys’s ex-boyfriend add depth and drama to the story.

Gibson’s writing beautifully balances eerie moments with heartwarming scenes, making this a delightful read for fans of romantic fantasy. The novella is well-paced, with a perfect blend of action, humor, and heartfelt moments. If you enjoy enchanting tales with a touch of the supernatural, Odd Spirits is a must-read!

Thank you for an arc copy!

Okey, this was nice addition to Evocation, gave us more insight into Rhys and Moira beginning of marriage and was quick and fun to read.

The audiobook narrators were good and it's only three hours so I would recommend it to everyone who read evocation!

Thank you Netgalley for providing digital advanced copy in exchange for honest review

A spooky haunted house novella perfectly sets the tone for a mystical Fall.

I read and loved Evocation by S.T. Gibson earlier this year, so I jumped at the chance to read this little prequel! In it, we get a closer look at our darling newlyweds Rhys and Moira, as well as some intriguing scenes of David. If you haven’t already read Evocation, I would say go ahead and start with this prequel.
It adds real depth to the characters and a closer look at their shared histories.

The narrator does a nice job of distinguishing between the characters and I enjoyed the tone he uses for Moira.

S.T. Gibson writes intricate and real relationships that draw you in while offering a big dose of the occult and a touch of spice.

I love a good novella prequel. I loved these characters in Evocation. Something here was missing though. There wasn’t the same spark as the first book, and I want to say it was the narrator that just didn’t land these characters. The voice wasn’t as deep so it led Moira and Rhys to be too immature almost. I don’t think it was the writing because what was written was still in character for them.
I’m all for the power of love being the cure, but done this quickly was hard to get behind.
Still very excited to see what happens next, so this was a nice read to hold me over until next year.

Odd Spirits is a prequel to The Summoner’s Circle series and focuses on the marriage between Rhys and Moira. This book serves more to give backstory to the characters rather than add to the plot of Evocation. It was interesting to learn more about Rhys, Moira, and the challenges they faced especially when faced with a little supernatural shenanigans. I especially loved how Rhys and Moira explored their distinctly different magical backgrounds and how they each approach magic. I read this via audiobook and enjoyed Joe Hempel’s narration. It kept me interested in the story, and I felt the narration fit with the vibe of the story. Overall, this is a short, sweet, character driven read.

I was so excited when I received the proof !
Quick read, we learned more about the past of the characters (first installment; <u> evocation </> ).
It is a bit cheesy and with the pace of the story it feels "fake". But I think, with the other books it will make more sense.

Thank you net galley for the copy.

I flew through Odd Spirits as both a physical book and audiobook. The audiobook is a good standard audiobook, but the narration does not do the book itself justice.

This is the perfect prequel to The Summoner Series, and could be read before or after Evocations. I would recommend after.

The characters are astoundingly charming and beautifully devoted. They are terrible and ever so human. The nod to the innermost feelings of a polyamorous person is a breath of fresh air.

This is for the lovers of all that is occult.

I cannot recommend this series enough!
