I enjoyed this. I liked getting a little glimpse into Moira and Rhys’s past and their more current frustrations. I like how the power of communication and communication avoidance was highlighted. It also highlights some of h the couples history with David and the society. The audiobook was good. I have no qualms to mention. The physical book I bought (Waterstones) is very, very pretty. I always appreciate bonus character art.
Thank you to NetGalley, S.T. Gibson, and Tantor Audio for this audiobook ARC.
Odd Spirits is a prequel to Evocation following Rhys, Moira, and David. I genuinely liked two out of the three MCs in Evocation, but I disliked all of them in this novella.
I received an ALC from Tantor Audio via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
thank you so much to tantor audios for the audiobook!
odd spirits is prequel novella to evocation. it follows Rhys and Moira when they’re newly wed. Moira is a hereditary witch and Rhys is studying to become a sorcerer. now their house has started to have spiritual disturbances, which causes tension and distrust in their marriage.
i really enjoyed this one as it atmospheric (which i expected nothing less from ST. Gibson) and it was perfect for october. it was also quite nice to see the beginnings of Rhys and Moira’s relationships, especially cause i found their dynamic really good in evocation.
i really loved the narration and definitely easy to follow. i think it really sets the atmosphere for this cute novella!!
Odd Spirits was fine… I think the writing was very good, but I kind of disliked the characters a bit. Even though more context was added regarding their backstories, they were all very annoying to me. This was confusing, because I actually liked them in Evocation… This was also just too short, in my mind. The plot was entertaining, but I wanted more.
Thank you for the audio ALC in exchange for an honest review!
I read and loved Evocation earlier this year and have been hungry for more of Rhys, Moira, and David. I don't usually enjoy stories about marriages in trouble, but knowing where Rhys and Moira are in the future took away some of the usual angst. I loved getting to see more of the early days of Rhys and Moira's relationship, as well as more context about their history with David that were hinted to in Evocation. I think you could read this as an introduction to the Summoner's Circle series, but would feel more grounded in the characters and their interpersonal connections if you start with Evocation.
I wish there had been a separate narrator for Moira, but the narrator did an excellent job with both Rhys and Moira's POVs.
Now I really can't wait for the next installment!
