One of those authors whose books you do not have to read to know that it will be enjoyable.
Read it over the course of two days, as you just don’t want to put it down. Recommended
Another great read in this series! It is really getting personal now that they are looking into who leaked info to the press - and there is pretty much only one suspect. At the same time there is a nasty case for the team to solve. If you are not familiar with OMJ Ryan, you are really missing out! I love the team, the writing, and the plot!
Another decent instalment in this series, of which I have read them all. I was interested to see how DCI Phillips would cope with Brown in a senior position and we soon found out. I did feel like the scenes with the investigation by Professional Standards were quite rushed and could have been a more prominent part of the book. In fact, the whole book felt a bit rushed compared to earlier ones, but there was plenty going on to move it along, with lots of involvement from the main characters. I have an unanswered question about one of the detectives, but cannot ask it here as it would be a spoiler. I wonder if other readers will pick up on it also, as it seems like an omission.
This was a strong twelfth entry in the Detective Jane Phillips series. It had that overall feel that I was looking for and enjoyed the suspenseful feel to the story. The writing felt like the same from book to book and enjoyed going on this journey. It left me wanting to read more in this series and from OMJ Ryan.
**Book Review: *Deadly Fury* by OMJ Ryan**
*Deadly Fury* by OMJ Ryan is the latest installment in the gripping series that blends intense crime investigation with character-driven storytelling. The novel once again centers on a group of detectives as they navigate a chilling case that plunges them into the darkest corners of human nature.
First and foremost, it's important to offer a trigger warning for potential readers: *Deadly Fury* addresses themes of sexual assault, which may be distressing for some. That said, Ryan handles these sensitive topics with a great deal of care and restraint, never losing sight of the need for dignity and respect in the narrative.
The story kicks off with a particularly brutal series of deaths, each more shocking and gruesome than the last. The author does not shy away from detailing the horrific nature of the crimes, which might be unsettling for readers sensitive to violence. However, despite the graphic depictions of the murders, the focus remains on the emotional and psychological toll these events take on the characters, especially the detectives who are working to solve the case.
Speaking of the detectives, one of the standout aspects of *Deadly Fury* is its character development. Ryan has a knack for crafting complex, relatable protagonists. As the detectives unravel the mystery, readers are not just invested in solving the case, but also in the personal dynamics of the team. There’s an authenticity to the relationships and struggles within the group, which adds depth to the narrative. Their determination to bring justice to the victims, coupled with the emotional weight they carry from their own lives, makes them characters you can't help but root for.
While the investigation itself is compelling, it’s the human elements—how the detectives cope with the grim realities of their work, and how they lean on each other for support—that truly elevate the story. Ryan’s writing is both engaging and empathetic, capturing the nuances of human emotion even in the face of unspeakable tragedy.
Despite the brutal nature of the crimes and the darkness that permeates the book, the pacing and structure of *Deadly Fury* ensure that the story remains gripping without being overwhelming. The twists and turns keep the reader on edge, and the resolution, while satisfying, leaves enough lingering questions to spark anticipation for the next book in the series.
In conclusion, *Deadly Fury* is a strong continuation of the series. Ryan's deft handling of difficult subject matter, the richly developed characters, and the well-paced suspense make this book a compelling read for fans of crime thrillers. While the content is intense and at times distressing, it is also thoughtful and well-crafted, making it an engaging and worthwhile read for those who enjoy dark, character-driven mysteries.
After the previous book in the series I didn’t think it could get any better, but this again, was fabulous.
Poor Jane, she gets rid of one bad egg, and then finds herself being the subject of internal investigations. Typical, those that do the crime don’t do the time, it’s the innocent that suffer.
Coupled with some nasty murders, but in my opinion justified, she has her work cut out.
This is edge of the seat reading and i thoroughly enjoyed it and the ending, well ……..
My thanks to Netgalley and Mr Ryan for the ARC.
Another great read in this series.
Brilliant storyline and wonderfully written characters.
Loved it.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
Another brilliantly gripping instalment in this terrific procedural series. The characters are well drawn and the mystery keeps you glued to the page. Looking forward to the next one.
Yet another great edition to this series.
The story was good.
Also the characters in this series are good like they are a family makes for a better read
Great twists and turns
I've been with this series ever since the first book was published back in 2019, reading each new sequel as soon as it was published. Deadly Fury is already book number twelve of this detective thriller series set in Manchester... And I confess that I'm starting to wonder if it has become time to leave this series be. Why? I'll try to explain below, but I do want to stress that there is no doubt that this newest sequel still reads like a train despite a certain aspect that really frustrated me.
Before I continue, I have to say that I personally wouldn’t recommend reading this series out of order. Why? You will be missing out on a lot of character background, character dynamics and key events from the previous books, and you definitely won’t appreciate the full impact of a certain extremely unlikeable character otherwise. Especially with the new developments in Deadly Fury... This whole series is highly engaging though, so well worth your time if you need/want to catch up.
One of the things I love about this series is the banter between Jane Phillips and the rest of her team, and this sequel didn’t let me down on that front. The banter helps balancing out the more serious topics, and I love the dynamics between the team members in general. My one complaint about this series has always been having to deal with Fox again and again; I just can't believe that after the events in the previous book, the story just threw Brown at us straight away. I mean, don't we get a little breather?! Do we really have to deal with someone seemingly even WORSE than Fox straight away?! Seriously, Brown and everything he represents just makes me want to throw in the towel and leave this series be in the future. And yes, that is with me still very much enjoying the dynamics between the rest of the team.
The case in Deadly Fury was an intriguing one with the focus on (child)abuse and the victims all being abusers. This raises some interesting questions... Did they simply have it coming? Was the killing justified? Or do even abusers and rapists deserve the full protection of the law? While what Lina was doing was wrong of course, you cannot help but understand her reasoning and it is true that victims of abuse often have a really hard time freeing themselves of their abusers/stalkers. This is represented with Albert's character, who clearly doesn't want to leave his victims alone even after a long bout of prison. What do you do when the police can't help and the intrusion doesn't stop? It's surprisingly easy to understand why Lina decided to do what she did to be honest...
The writing style itself is just as engaging as I’ve become used to, and somehow it is very easy to just keep turning page after page. True, I absolutely hated the new direction the series took with Brown and the internal affairs investigation... Especially since his character seems to be even worse than Fox, and I truly detested having to spend time with her. The case itself was interesting enough though to make me wonder if I should give the series another chance before abandoning it completely... But if Brown is just as infuriating in the next book, I'm out.
Fantastic read! Little creepy but great read! This book might have a few triggers so beware! This book had suspense, intriguing, action, murder, child rape but not descriptive, a demented father, incest, and a few wild twists and turns! The story was very interesting and kept me glued to my kindle! I highly recommend reading this book! I can’t wait for more from this author! Definitely one of my new to me top favorites! Thank you NetGalley, OMJ Ryan and the publishers for sharing this book with me!
DCI Jane Phillips is in trouble for passing sensitive information to a reporter. However, she did it to expose a corrupt cop.
She tries not to worry about the consequenses of her actions when she is called out to a suspicious death.
And then there is another - trying to find clues as to the killer is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
Ok Mr Ryan!! This really has to stop! No - I don't mean that. But this book cost me hours of sleep. Not the subject matter, the fact that I started it at bedtime and could NOT put it down!
Brilliant! Jane Phillips is a fantastic character, I love her integrity and her dogged determination to close cases. She has empathy, and a deep respect for the members of her team.
This is a fast paced crime thriller, and it kept me rapt from the first page to the last.
I can't wait for the next in the series.
If I could award more than 5/5 stars, I would.
Thanks to Netgalley and Inkubator Books for the opportunity to read this book.
