Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC for review.
While I read read -- and LOVED -- Mayne's Underwater Investigative Unit series, this one really didn't hold my interest. Merging the UIU characters with characters from two of his other series (which I haven't read) felt muddled. The main characters from another series, Jessica and Theo, just didn't hit it for me. Maybe if I'd read their books (which I would but I can't find them at the library) I'd feel more connected. Their personalities felt stiff and some parts were unbelievable (like their constantly using hand gestures to talk to each other...do we mean sign language? I don't get it). As for the plot of this book, there was a lot going on and I felt pretty bored until the last third of it.

An excellent read for any and all readers! Author comes at you with both barrels and knocks you out of your shoes! Great job fleshing out all the characters. I give this book FIVE stars! Definitely recommend!

Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for this arc. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good book. My only complaint is that sometimes it was hard to follow with too many side characters.

Our protagonist, Investigator McPherson asks for help from 2 of his colleagues to help him search for a vagrant he finds in the swamps of Florida. Things get complicated and that is where the author writes a compelling story.
I highly recommend Mr. Whisper.

I like Andrew Mayne's writing and I like the characters especially the Underwater Investigators team. Strong characters, good mystery and writing that flows well, what's not to like.

This book was rather hard to read. The amount of side characters introduced makes it quite confusing. The story line/ plot was promising.. However things seemed to line up a little too neatly for me. And a lot of those things just didn't make sense in the grand scheme of things. There's just no way someone would jump to the conclusion that Mitch was under the influence of an AI chat bot just because their daughter let them know that people use AI chat services these days…… makes no sense to get to that conclusion. And that's just one example.

A missing person's case. A mysterious mind-controlling entity. Four investigators. A disappointing read.
Mr. Whisper: A Thriller is a mystery thriller novel and the first instalment in the The Specialists series by Andrew Mayne.

(4.5) I have yet to be disappointed in an Andrew Mayne book. Finding leading characters from several of his other series tickled me pink, intrigued me and kept me flipping pages. Going back and forth between the individual sections threw me for a bit, but every book by Andrew Mayne I have to pay attention so I don't miss anything. As always there were surprises I didn't see coming. Thrilled this is the start of a new series. Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Mercer for allowing me to receive a copy after it released. (I also purchased) I freely share my honest thoughts and opinions. #Mr.Whisper #TheSpecialists #AndrewMayne #ThomasMercer #NetGalley

Fun, thrilling 4.5 read! I enjoyed a lot about this book - the plot was intriguing without being too over the top, the pacing was well thought out and moved quickly, and the characters (some who I had "met" before) were entertaining and fun to follow. I really enjoyed how all the characters were interwoven and meshed in the storyline. I think the techie side of this book was my favorite as the innovative gadgets were used to enhance the brainpower these characters brought to the table. I can't wait for more from this group and look forward to the next in the series. Many thanks to the publisher, Author, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Andrew Mayne has quickly become one of my favorite writers. He has multiple series of individuals with unique skills who solve crimes, and he has several of them working together in this new series.
This is a really hard mystery to solve, because how do you find someone who leaves messages directly in people's minds and doesn't leave witnesses or fingerprints?
I hope Mayne has more of these, because this was interesting, intelligent and suspenseful. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

There is a lot going on in this novel — a high school student with guns at school, missing boys and girls, supernatural experiences, AI, brain washing and mind control. With the help of various police officers, a retired serial killer hunter and a former FBI agent are engaged in an attempt to investigate why these seemingly unrelated events are occurring. After a promising and interesting beginning, this reader rapidly lost interest and the real mystery is why I continued to finish the book. I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book; but, unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book.

Sometimes my friends’ friends are my friends too. This story was a good place to introduce some favorite characters. I’ll be interested to see if they work well together again.

Thanks Thomas and Mercer and Netgalley for providing this ARC. I’m a sucker for Andrew Mayne’s books, or at least some of the series. I really enjoy the underwater detective series with Sloan. This novel combines the protagonists from (I believe) 3 different series. I’m not sure it was successful. It started strong but I felt it lost steam as it went, with too many really implausible events and a few gaps where it seemed to jump from one thing going on to a very quick resolution. Overall, a quick read and entertaining, but not a favorite for me.

This was such a good book. I loved the story and the writing so much. The characters were great and the story flowed smoothly. Will definitely read more books by this author in the future.

Now that all the characters know each other, book 2 will be a much smoother ride. It felt a little disjointed trying to pull the story together, they each flourish on their own but had to find their way here. Excited for the next in the series but also for more standalone for each character.

”We all have some degree of disassociation with the voice in our head.”
What a brilliant concept: combining all our favorite Mayne characters into a new series!
I have been obsessed with Theo Cray (Dr. Theo Cray to those he dislikes) since the first book, The Naturalist, was published and eagerly awaited each sequel. Somewhere in between, I started the Jessica Blackwood series, another uniquely fascinating character, and adored their crossover series Theo Cray & Jessica Blackwood.
The Underwater Investigation Unit, following Sloan McPherson, is another favorite, and I was super excited to see them all come together. The fourth player, Brad Trasker, and his namesake series, Trasker, were new to me, but I was so invested in his chapters and the little teasers of past adventures that I cannot wait to start his series!
The story of the enigmatic Mr. Whisper shifts between all four specialists’ points of view, though Theo and Jessica feel a bit more predominant, which I enjoyed, as there are quite a lot of characters and points of view throughout the story.
One of the things I love most about Andrew Mayne’s stories, besides his unique and memorable characters, is his amazing storytelling. Could I explain most of the science to someone? Absolutely not. Yet, his writing draws me in, keeps me engaged, and never makes me doubt a single technicality… Theo has a robot dog now? Okay, can’t wait to see what he digs up!
Without a doubt, this multilayered narrative was so intricate that only those four could have solved it with their combined skill set, experience, and network. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I am hoping the second installment is coming soon.
If you love Andrew Mayne’s stories as much as I do, you will definitely enjoy this book! I am once again excited for the sequel.
If you’re new to Andrew Mayne, I highly recommend picking up his books and getting started! While you’ll probably appreciate the characters and backstories more if you are already familiar with their series, you can use Mr. Whisper as a starting point to jump into the Mayne universe! As I’ve mentioned, there are plenty of little anecdotes to help you gauge the characters.
Thank you NetGalley and Andrew Mayne for a copy. All opinions are my own.

"Mr whisper" by Andrew Mayne is a mystery / thriller novel released on the first of March this year. So it's relatively new and has loaaaads of good reviews.
Thanks for letting me read this copy Netgalley and Andrew Mayne.
You might know a series by this author called "The Underwater investigation Unit" with Sloan as the female FMC. That was actually the first serie I've read from this author and I absolutely loved it.
This book is the beginning of a new serie called "The specialists" and here is what I thought of this first book.
This book has multiple points of view. We have Sloan, whom I think will be a steady face (well maybe just persona) in this new serie. We also have a duo that investigates curious cases, they're called Jessica and Theo and, paralel to the investigation we also learn about Brad and the thing he'll be investigating.
Sloan finds a very disorientated man in the swamp, he's been called the Moss man because of his attire. The man, who's name is Michael has no recollection of anything apart from his name. Finding out Michael is actually a runaway that has been missing for many years, there are other similar cases that come to light.
Theo, Jessica and Sloan are looking into the cases, it seems to be the people they are looking for all have something in common, a book called "The star rover" and all heard a voice they called Mr. Whisper. The person they suspect seems to be invisible. Will they find him?
Okay, listen.. Normally I have a fast pace with books, but this one had me slow going. The multiple points of view made that it cost me a bit more time. Also, it was all a bit long. I think it's really unfortunate that the real action was confined to the last 30 pages with an open end.. I would've liked to see this story concluded so the second book of this series would be a whole new story.
It's a 3,5 star read for me.

I don't need to read the blurb to throw myself into a book by Andrew Mayne.
The plot, as usual with the author, is intricate, keeping you on edge, guessing and wanting to know more. In this case the mystery is investigated by his most iconic and charismatic characters brought together in one book and that has delighted me.
It is not necessary to read the previous ones because this is the beginning of a new series, however I am sure that if you read this one, you will have to read the others. Highly recommended.

Mr Whisper is the beginning of a new thriller series, The Specialists. Characters from the authors other series all play a key role in this new series. Investigator Sloan McPherson, from the Underwater Investigation Unit, begins the story as she is investigating a mysterious person in the Everglades. The man has a messed up memory and went missing as a teenager from the other side of the country. FBI agent Jessica Blackwood and scientist Theo Cray, from their own series, are called into investigate when a teenager attempts a school shooting with no ammo and a messed up memory and a feeling everything is a dream. Corporate security expert and retired spy Brad Trasker, from his own series, is working behind the scenes to uncover a mysterious manipulator. Missing teenagers, an old book, and signs of memory manipulation put all the investigators on the trail of an evil mastermind using vulnerable young people to do his dirty work. While all the characters appear in the story, the majority of the story emphasizes Jessica and Theo as the main characters. The story twists and turns into an unpredictable and shocking thriller that keeps the pages turning and suspense building. The author provides prime material for his greatest characters to continue in a new storyline and a promising new series. My voluntary, unbiased, and non-mandatory review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.

I was offered the opportunity to read this great book on NetGalley and raced through it! For anyone who has read other books by Andrew Mayne, there are the familiar and well-loved investigators but if you’re new to this author then it works equally well as an introduction to their various and individual approaches.
I love Andrew’s style of writing and the way he plots his books! The plots are complicated and convoluted but the books are easy to read, I don’t know how he does it! There is plenty of action and lots of brain teasing detail along the way. I particularly like the way this book brings the ‘specialists’ from previous books together to address an even more complicated problem and the way all their skills are combined. I hope we see them working together in future books.
I loved this and couldn’t put it down … now I’m heading off to make sure I’ve read all the previous books by this author!
