Take A Hike is a wonderful introductory guide for kids on how to enjoy the great outdoors. It is chockfull of tips, ideas, and activities to keep them busy and informed! I found the use of text and pictures on each page engaging and well-balanced. I especially liked the "How to Use This Book" section, which provided a series of icons found throughout the book for different types of topics: Activity, Natural Wonders, Climate Spotlight, Science Says, Make a Mini Habit, and Dream Destinations.
I loved how it connected the evidence-based science to how a child would experience it, and clearly explains why it is important. For example, at the start of Chapter 4, it describes how being around trees improves mood and reduces stress in addition to helping combat air and water pollution. Fun fact from the book: America's oldest bristlecone pine tree is nearly 5,000 years old! Some activities in this chapter includes leaf rubbing, DIY recipe box, and forest bathing.
This books also goes beyond the USA, bringing in information from all over the world such as describing a reforestation technique in Japan to the Swedish tradition of building a glowing snowball lantern to cenotes in Mexico. There is so much to discover in this book!
All in all, I think this would be a great addition to any family's bookshelf! Thank you Magination Press-American Psychological Association for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
