This three-novella collection follows three women across three wars, all of whom are tied together by the same wedding dress.
In A Heart in Disguise, we follow WWI camoufleur (a maker of camouflage suits) Clara Westlake, who overhears a German plot while testing out her design. But no one will believe her except her old flame Captain Marcus Reeves, who has just returned from war honorably discharged due to injury. Soon, the romance between them heats up, as does the danger. This was very well researched, and the author's note at the end pointed out some historical facts I had not been aware of previously. This was by far my favorite story in the collection.
In A Letter to Eli, we follow Bette Barry, a woman making her living as a hotel housecleaner during WWII. When her best friend confesses to writing letters to Bette's ex in Bette's name--and said ex is wounded and recovering at the local Army hospital--Bette must face past hurts and decided if she can make a new future with the boy who broke her heart. This was at times bittersweet and unflinchingly addresses the realities faced by young couples during the war.
In A Daffodil in the Dress, we follow young widow and mother Kate, whose husband died in Vietnam shortly before their daughter was born. While feelings have been growing between her and her bookstore owner boss, Kate must decide if she's ready to love again. This was a slower paced story focusing on Kate's worries for what is best for her daughter and overcoming her fears on loving again. The war is mentioned a few times but is not the focus.
