I am vape by Julia Cook is a great children's books talking about the dangers of vaping in a simplified yet still informational way that would be easy for children to understand, I commend the author for choosing to speak up about these topics.
Simple, yet informative non-fiction picture book about the dangers of vaping. This would be a great educational tool for classroom libraries and school nurses!
I loved this book except for a lack of citations and further resources. As a science and journalism teacher, I find this aspect vital. Even if kids rarely use it, telling where your information comes from, is a vital part of publishing anything nonfiction.
I Am Vape: A Picture Book About the Dangers of Vaping by Julia Cook is such an important and well informed book.
I had my fourteen year old son read this to better inform and maybe hopefully help him a bit to be better educated about the dangers of valuing moving into high school and he said that he actually enjoyed it.
He learned a couple of things and enjoyed the details.
I really liked reading this book and I think that the goal that the author has is so important, especially today. However, there were two small(ish) things that I would edit:
1. I think it would be beneficial for the targeted age group to be a bit clearer. The topic is definitely irrelevant to very young readers, but the format feels to juvenile for, say, middle-school-age kids.
2. The author included everything that is relevant and very important, but I think that the order could be a little better. A good example of this is the "vapes can blow up in your hands" part. It's a perfect thing to include, but it felt out of place.
Those two things aside, though, I really like this book! It's good to teach kids about the dangers of vaping early on, so that this dangerous "trend" can be put to an end.
Bravo!
A very clear explanation for what vaping is with clear answers and connections to the impact on your body. Great for educators and school libraries.
In a world where "fitting in" can be confusing for children, I Am Vape unveils the truth behind a seemingly harmless trend. This powerful picture book creatively exposes the dangers of vaping to young readers in a non-scary way that they can understand.
This is an incredibly important book for kids! The imagery created great impact, especially the dark lungs with black spots. This is the type of book that should be a requirement to read. I love how the author included how these companies make them so sleek they fit in pencil cases, which is why it’s even more terrifying.
A must read for all kids & parents!
As a former educator, I am well-aware of Julia Cook and all her books and get excited when she has something new out. I Am Vape focuses on the dangers of vaping, including how vaping can negatively impact health and safety. The information is in a format that is easily digestible for younger kiddos. Thanks to National Center for Youth Issues and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
