Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for the ARC of this audiobook for my honest review
This plot was thought out incredibly. I cared for all the characters, at times I was confused because of how many characters there were and names and codenames so there was more than just one thing to remember a person. Once I understood though I was hooked. Such great twists, mystery and tense situations. I recommend !
I'll be publishing my review on Goodreads and StoryGraph 4th January and on Tik tok most likely will add to a monthly wrap up post with review the beginning of February
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to and give a review. Was unable to finish listening to this book. The characters were very undeveloped and the story was plodding. The author seems to be obsessed with different makes and models of automobiles. The reader does not care about the engine size or how to shift a manual transmission. Five chapters in and I still was unable to determine the plot.
The Battle Born Series continues with this third installment from Jack Stewart. This is my first Battle Born book, but already I can tell I need to go back and read the first two books in this series. The third book continues the adventures of Colt Bancroft (TopGun Pilot) and 'Punky' King (NCIS Investigator) as they get thrown together once again to defeat the efforts of other nations wanting to bring the USA down.
As a fan of the whole NCIS TV series, I loved they gave Punky a role that fits with those characters I watch. Bringing in China, plus Russians, as the aggressor is totally believable if you are aware of international politics and wars. The situation is one I expect has happened or will happen soon, as our technology makes energy weapons a possibility. Jack Stewart channels a little Tom Clancy in his ability to keep peeling back layers to the story. I was thinking the book was about to end when suddenly Colt and Punky have a new wrinkle to fight.
The only negative would be the attention to detail that Stewart uses in describing scenes, weapons, gear and so much else. I liked the description, but sometimes I would skip ahead to keep reading the action. But definitely a readable story!
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Colt just saw a face he recognized, but from where? After serving overseas as a pilot, he’s met so many people in so many places. Colt calls after the man and starts to trail him out the casino doors when chaos erupts. He watches as masked men pour out of a cargo van and grab the man. Then gunfire fills the air from both the kidnappers and someone on the other side of the portico he can’t see. Whoever this man is, it’s obvious he’s valuable to more than one party. Will Colt be caught in the crossfire or will he be able to help rescue the man from his captors?
Bogey Spades is the third book in the Battle Born series from Jack Stewart featuring Navy pilots and SEALs along side NCIS agents and a host of other military servicemembers. Pulling on his own TOPGUN training and service in Afghanistan and Africa, Stewart delivers realistic military characters and plot details an unexperienced author just couldn’t do. This book showcases the innovation and skill of these specially forces and is truly about the sacrifices these frontline teams take to keep us all safe from threats both seen and hidden.
I give Bogey Spades 4 out of 5 stars. This is the first book I’ve read by Stewart and I was not disappointed! The author brings the scenes and plot to life with vivid details and descriptions of the landscape and people. I did feel a bit lost in some areas because I haven’t read the first two installments in this series, but overall followed the plot without the need for additional information. The only other frustration I had was from the use of so many acronyms. For those of us who are civilians, we do not always understand specialized acronyms – I had to look things up more than once. Overall this book was a great introduction to a new author and cast of characters!
Readers who enjoy other military and police based thrillers like Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series or John Sandford’s Lucas Davenport works, you will enjoy this, too. With gun violence, death, espionage, and light references to sex, this novel would be best directed to more mature audiences over 16. This would also be a great bookclub choice with so many characters and events to unpack!
I was drawn to Bogey Spades initially for the cover – it looks so much like the recent Jack Ryan books. But I reached out for the chance to listen to this audiobook before it’s release because of the publisher’s blurb. I am excited to have found a new author in a genre I love so much and can’t wait to read the first two books in this series.
Bogey Spades hit bookshelves earlier this week – you can grab your copy in our Bookshop.org store!
Bogey Spade is the third book in Jack Stewart’s Battle Born series, a series of smart, action packed military thrillers. TOPGUN pilot Colt Bancroft returns, as does NCIS special Agent Emmy ‘Punky’ King. Now while I believe you could read this as a standalone, the truth is you’re meant to read this as a series. The adventures build upon each other and you’ll definitely get more out of this one if you’ve at least read the first book, Unknown Rider, as there are very strong connections to the storylines originating there. As an actual former Top Gun instructor pilot, Steward is able to give your an authentic feel for what it is like be in the cockpit. But more than that, he just seems to know how to tell a really good story. The characters as great, the pacing is wonderful, and the stories are exciting. But he doesn’t let all this knowledge slow things down with endless/needless explanations. (A problem I always had with Tom Clancy. I appreciated the man’s attention to detail, but often times he’d basically stop telling you the story and spend 10+ pages explaining the minute inner workings of some obscure piece of equipment. /rant, lol) Stewart never does that, he fully understands we are reading his books to be entertained. And entertained I was. Chinese spies, shootouts on the streets of Vegas, Punky wrecking yet another car…this is what kept me flipping pages. But not only flipping pages. I was thrilled to get a chance to read an eARC of Bogey Spades, but no sooner had I finished than I got a chance to also listen to an advanced copy of the audio version. I didn’t hesitate for a second. With Ray Porter once again delivering the narration I couldn’t pass it up. As always he nails it. No matter how you choose to experience this book series (reading or listening …or like me both ways) you can’t go wrong. 5 stars both ways! Fans of Tom Clancy, Brad Thor, and Vince Flynn will want to check this series out. I’d like to thank Severn River Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an eARC and Dreamscape Select | Severn River Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to an advanced copy of of the audio version of Jack Stewart’s Bogey Spades.

So who is stirring up trouble now? Turns out you don't need a fortune cookie to figure it out. Another enjoyable romp by Jack Stewart.
So, the crew is back together!
Hold on to your seats, your breath…and everything else, as this one shoots you out of a canon, and never even slows down…never mind stop! 🛑
The Top Gun Pilots are at it again…this time trying to save the world from sudden doom…in the blink of an eye.
As pacts are made, and people are dying, a routine practice flight turns into something deadly-ish… but just as they are starting to figure out what the heck is going on, new threats arise…and they are off RUNNING full speed ahead…AGAIN!!
And this time, the Vice President, who they believe to be a shoe-in for the next presidency, is the one who the target seems to be following! 😮🫣
As they seem to be closing in on the bad guys, well, we’ll just say that your mouths will be HANGING OPEN 😩…if you are like me!
And the ending, well, that just seems to show that we can happily expect book #4 in the future!!
If you enjoy FAST paced, flying by the seat of your pants, action-packed novels…do NOT pass this one up!!
5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!
#BogeySpades (Battle Born #3) by #JackStewart and narrated phenomenally by #RayPorter.
(I somehow missed book #2, so I just put it on hold to read.
Book #1 was incredible as well!!)

This is the third book in this series and I was thrilled to be able to listen to an audio ARC. As with the first 2 books in this series, this book is narrated by Ray Porter - who is among the best of the best in the business.
The format and the writing style of this series gives listening to the audio version a particular boost given that there is a lot of radio chatter and communication between the fighter pilots and air control. Ray Porter does an excellent job with most everything he narrates, but he truly excels with the cadence and real life portrayal of these characters while dealing with the various situations that occur in the air.
As always, I enjoyed both the MMC Colt Bancroft- an expert fighter pilot - and the FMC Emmy "Punky" King - an NCIS agent trying to find the traitor in the military who has been giving top secret US information to the Chinese. There is not a romantic relationship between the two but they do work well together and have developed a kind of trust after all of the things they have dealt with in the past.
In this book, through an odd coincidence, Colt and Punky end up at the same scene - a kidnapping attempt of a suspect that Punky has been after for years. This is not a stand alone book as it is the continuation of an overarching storyline from the previous two books. I think you could gather the gist of things, but it would be better to start with the first book and move forward from there. The series is definitely worth it.
I wasn't sure if this was going to be a trilogy and if this book was going to wrap everything up. It wasn't until the very last page that it becomes clear that NO - not only is this NOT going to be wrapped up - but there is a very unexpected twist that sets up the scenario for the next and possibly next couple of books after that (it was truly unexpected).
In this book, we get the addition of a third player in this mess- the Russians - and a lot of the book is spent trying to figure out how exactly the Russians fit into all of the things occurring. As usual, the book is extremely fast paced and full of action. Mr. Stewart knows how to expertly crank up the tension as things build to a climax and believe me, there is quite the tension in this book.
Mr. Stewart was actually a military pilot and that always comes through in his writing of any scenes involving anything relating to aviation. He has gotten better through the books at not making the language and descriptions TOO complicated to understand for us "non-pilots", but there is enough expertise in the descriptions and communications that you actually FEEL like you are in the air with a Top Gun pilot. THAT is a wonderful yet unique experience for a reader/listener.
Thank you to NetGalley and to Dreamscape Select | Severn River Publishing for the opportunity to listen to and review this audio ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone. This book will be out for publication on November 19, 2024.
Bogey spades is a fast-paced action thriller that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. A federal agent tracking a spy in the US military gets involved in a web of intrigue and mystery. She teams up with a fighter pilot she’s worked with in the past in a race against time.
The story is fast-paced and well-plotted, and doesn’t get bogged down. It blends action in the air with fighter jets and recon planes seamlessly with action on the ground. The political intrigue is also well executed, giving just enough information. To keep the reader wanting more.
The characters share good dynamics, particularly “Punky” King and Colt Bancroft, the two main characters. They have the right blending of personalities to make their interactions fun and dynamic, and they play off the dude characters very well.
In all, I highly recommend Bogey Spades and look forward to seeing what happens next.
Bogey Spades by Jack Stewart
Narrated by Ray Porter
Ray Porter, once again, does a stellar job of narrating the third book of the Battle Born series. And once again we see my favorite characters in this series, characters who somehow find themselves at that same chaotic place at the same time. Even one of the characters mentions that fact but fine with me, they are the people who can do the job and want to do the job, and I like watching them do it.
NCIS Special Agent Emmy "Punky" King has to make a quick decision of whether to trust someone who is not to be trusted. Either choice could be the wrong choice, there might not be a right answer. TOPGUN pilot Colt Bancroft has been asked to pick elite pilots for a resurrected light attack squadron, which has him in the right place at the right time to thwart something that can't even be identified. Plus an advanced weapon is missing on US soil and the Vice President could be involved in some way. So much action, so many people making choices they should regret even if they don't regret them. And as seen from the first two books, this war on US soil is not over. There is more to come and it's hard to tell friend from enemy more often than not. Now I guess there will be a long wait for the next book, I do hope there is a next book, things are certainly set up for a next book. Let it happen!
Thank you to Dreamscape Select | Severn River Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC.
I was eager to read "Bogey Spades" because I had read Jack Stewart's previous two books in the "Battle Born Series" and loved both of them. After reading all of Jack Carr's books, and the Andrews and Wilson's books,, I was hungry for a similar military type of thriller that was breathtakingly written in a way, where everything comes to life.. A lot of other authors have tried to duplicate this type of writing but have fallen short, where I find no reason to finish reading one of their books. But Jack Stewart's "Bullet Born Series" hits the mark. "Bogey Spades" blends two of the United States biggest antagonists, China and Russia, into foes that Punky and Colt have to try and second guess. Both Punky and Colt's characters are developed so well that you feel like you have actually known them in real life. These two agents take you along with them and allow you to experience what they are experiencing. The best books that I've ever read are ones that allow you to have an "experience" that you couldn't otherwise have outside of their pages. I highly recommend Bogey Spades to anyone who loves military and quasi-military thrillers that land you at ground zero in the middle of all of the. fast paced, high stakes and twisty action.
