This book was a quick but interesting read by a former correctional officer who had a fascination with the serial killer Michael Ross. After getting to meet him in her final year of being in corrections, she decided to change careers. Later, she wrote to him, without revealing that she had met him in her work there. They corresponded until he was put to death 3 years later.

This was an interesting insight into the life of a maximum security prison guard. Her peers did not treat her with respect, but the inmates did. She becomes friends with a serial killer and this is basically there story and correspondence before his persecution. Of all true crime books I have read, few killers show remorse. This one actually does and you cannot help but feel empathetic towards him. This was written in a very profound, emotional tone, and it was quite a good read.

Great memior by Lopez. She tells her story and experiences as a female corrections officer in a men's prison. I love her candor and that she treated the prisoners like humans and with respect. The book was very interesting and intriguing.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book.

yThis is a true account of a young single mother's experiences as she worked as a correctional officer. Mayra Lopez did not like some of the ways the male correctional officers treated the inmates. She liked to treat them with respect and they respected her back. Some of the correctional officers would have liked to have seen Mayra sacked. But her connection with Michael Ross, I'd never heard of him before, was interesting

I would like to thank #NetGalley #VictoryEditingNetGalleyGroup and the author #MayaLopez for my ARC of #TheDarknessWithinPrisonWalls in exchange for an honest review.

This is a pretty short book that gives a peek behind the walls and razor wire of prisons from the perspective of a female corrections officer. Her experiences with male inmates was interesting as she treated them with respect and usually got respect returned. The parts about Michael Ross were a bonus.
