Well, goodreads thinks this is the first book in this series, but it certainly doesn't want to appear to be. It features a girl brought up a star detective, and the daughter of a star detective, who is attending the school's fund-raising fashion show when a mahoosively valuable necklace goes missing before it can be displayed. With this world's Lestrade fingering the school janitor, it's down to her to prove his innocence – and work out who did the crime and why and how.
It's easily read, and is over pretty quickly, due to some weird lapses in thriller-telling logic (the sidekick being friends with ace online detectives the least of these). The way the Lestrade equivalent is forced to look a numpty is too broad, and too many names begin with M to be of much help with comprehension. All told it's perfectly average – definitely able to give a pleasurable read to the right audience member, but not essential in any way or form. And why it has so much about her mother's mental illness in the light of her husband – our heroine's father – going missing, remains to be seen when other titles finally get to tell us more. Before then, three stars is about it.
I enjoyed this book. Young readers will fall in love with Mattie Madison.
Mattie Madison is a child detective who stumbles on a mystery at her school's fashion show. She is a quick thinker who gets the inside scoop in spite of the unexpected situation she is faced with.
She processes the evidence with a critical mind that showcases her experience in such matters.
She is relatable but smart enough to outthink the police.
