Cat is asked by a writer's circle to look into the hit and run of an aspiring author. Becky had been chosen to write the sequel to a sensational book from the early 60's. The problem is that Becky was not popular and it would easier to write a list of people that didn't have a motive. As the investigation progresses, she hits dead end after dead end and is ready to call it quits, but various things happen and it's all go again. The death seems to be linked to the author of the original book and whether or not there is a suspicion that she didn't write it.
A bit slow to start, but this cartwheels towards the end.
Every time I am lucky enough to open a new D.B. Borton Cat Caliban Series of books I am reminded of how much I want to be part of the Catatonia Arms family. Cat Caliban, (the lead character) is the VERY unconventional mother figure that that keeps the residents of Catatonia Arms surrounded in love.
This book is the 10th book in the series, and I loved it as much as every other one I have read. Cat Caliban is asked to look into another murder, and this one leads her down a twisty road of suspects. Just as a lead makes her think one thing, she finds out it is a dead end. The biggest problem with this murder is that the suspects are enjoying being suspects.
The author throws in just enough humor to the story line to make it perfect. It kept me guessing right up until the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and D.B. Borton for the gifted ARC. All Opinions are my own and given voluntarily.
Easy flowing, entertaining mystery. Has an old-time feel and flavor that i enjoyed. Thank you Net Galley.
In this 1980s-set mystery, a disliked professor’s hit-and-run death seems like an open-and-shut case—until PI Cat Caliban gets involved. What initially looks like an accident soon unravels into a tangled web of deception, secrets, and greed. As Cat and her writers’ group dig deeper, they’re led down one false trail after another, with each clue leading to more questions and surprising plot twists. The suspense is relentless, keeping both Cat and the reader on their toes. Another captivating and unpredictable entry in a series that continues to impress!
Tenth Commandment by D. B. Borton, the continuing saga of Cat Caliban and her quest to become a licensed private detective. When Cat is embroiled in mystery and murder revolving around the authorship of a bestseller and the sequel to be written by another author, she jumps in with her usual fun crew and acerbic wit. It is nice to see an older protagonist and the plots are always fun.
As a child of the 80’s, I enjoyed the sense of nostalgia in this book. I also loved the premise of a book group hiring someone to look into the death of someone they didn’t actually seem to like that much. The plot is strong but I found the real appeal of this book to be the many fascinating characters and the depth of descriptions by the author. Everything was so clear and vivid - the dialogue, the scenery. Very well executed.
This was a strong tenth entry in the Cat Caliban Mystery series, it had everything that I was looking for from the previous nine books. The characters had that element that I wanted and enjoyed the overall feel of this in this continuation. D. B. Borton wrote this well and was glad I got to read this.
Cat tries her dam nest to carry this story but her character cohorts are determined to put on the breaks every time they open their mouth. The basic outline is Cat is called in by friend of a small mystery writers club to investigate what they believe to be the murder of one of the group. My initial reaction is that given how much they all hated the victim, why did they care that an accidental hit and run be investigated as a murder.
Secondly, the book is set 40 years ago in 1987 but the spoken language is full of modern slang, speech quirks, and structure that is contemporary.
While the story does improve it is not enough to counter the too cute factor. If you enjoy sleuthing septagenerian private sleuths this might be the perfect choice
Thank you to herbal let for the ARC.

This is set in the 1980s.
The author/professor was a self-absorbed know-it-all who was almost universally disliked. But that wasn't a good enough reason to do a hit and run over her at 0630. Now the writers group assumes the task of investigating a death which law enforcement thinks is accidental but Cat Caliban PI/writer believes to be otherwise. It's complicated by money, greed, lies, secretiveness, theft, and a growing collection of suspects. Every time they think they have a lead, it turns into a red herring and when least expected, a plot twist is there to make Cat and reader go nutz. Another fun brain teaser in a great series I've been following for ages!
