Loved it! An original premise and perfectly plotted out. It Lso has some amazing twists thrown in. The characters were brought to life perfectly and it all just felt really real and believable! I was absolutely hooked and couldn't wait to see how it all played out. And spoiler.... it played out absolutely nothing like I initially imagined lol
Wow. Absolutely incredible. Such a great read! Definitely one for my collection
Thank you NetGalley for letting me read this one
I think this is my first 5 star read in a while, the suspense was killing me the whole time!
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
Family Doctor kept me at the edge of my seat pretty much the whole time! It was so hard to put the book down, I kept wanting to read to find out what happened.
The flashbacks happened at perfect times, and they made sense. They related to what was happening in present day in the novel. Some books I’ve read go back and forth with POVs or flashbacks and I get lost easily. This book was very easy to read and navigate!
I did guess “whodunnit” but at that point I was randomly guessing people. The author *almost* had me with Donnie and Blair tbh. I did NOT guess that Ava was in on it too. It would be cool to have a second book showing what happens when she gets out of prison!
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this book and give my honest review on it. I will definitely be checking out more novels by this author!
I absolutely devoured this book and read it in one sitting. I really felt for the main character and certainly didn’t see the twists and turns in this story. I would highly recommend it
Thank you Netgalley, bookouture and J M Dalgleish for the eArc of Family Doctor.
This is a medium paced domestic thriller and I couldn't put it down. We follow our Mc, who is a doctor on a remote Island in Scotland. Doctor Howletts daughter goes missing and she has to kill one of her patients or her daughter dies.
This got straight into the plot and quickly unfolded with a good balance of character building and plot direction. Even though it all happens within a small village on a remote island, you get how remote this place is. There are some good reveals and some twists before the finale so this was a great page turner for me.
4 stars
Rule one: you have 72 hours to murder one of your patients.
Rule two: you must not tell another soul.
Rule three: you must not get caught.
If you break any of these simple rules, your daughter will die.
I really enjoyed this book so much I read it in two days. It was a very suspenseful thriller that I couldn’t put down. You begin suspecting everyone. The complex characters makes you unsure whether you like the character or not. I loved the descriptions of the Scottish island and feeling isolated to the mainland. The dual timeline keeps you wanting more. It also deals with a moral dilemma and thinking about how far you’d go if your family was at risk.
All in all a fast paced thriller, with twists thrown in that leave you wanting more.
Really enjoyed this! Super quick to read and loved the setting. I’ve read a lot of thrillers and this felt original and I loved the ending!
Absolutely gripping I finished it within a couple of hours. I was hooked from the start until the end and at times it had me on the edge of my seat. Fantastic
Family Doctor was a fun read - a fast-paced thriller, with plenty of twists and wonderfully dodgy character (and who doesn't love a dodgy character or two, to keep a reader on their toes?)
The setting is perfect, on a remote island off the coast of Scotland, where Dr. Kelly and her daughter are now residing. Life seems to be going well until she receives a very unsettling phone call - her daughter has been kidnapped and will only be released if her mother follows their instructions carefully by killing a patient.
The setting plays a central role in this novel and indeed is also a character in itself. The remoteness, isolation and windswept landscape, feed into Kelly's dilemma and the cat and mouse game that commences.
A fast-paced and twisty thriller. A good and fun read that kept me on my toes.
I was glad to finish this book as it wasn’t very engaging for me, much to my surprise, based on the blurb. I found it quite slow in pacing and bogged down by needless details like random little location names and last names that mostly started with Mc…. This made it convoluted and confusing (without actually adding anything as payback for remembering them).
The timing of the delivery of information was, I’m sure, intentional for creating suspense, but really didn’t give me a chance to get to know the characters or care about them.
As far as the ending goes, it was not a surprise at all by the time I got there.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read an early copy.
Hey hey my favorites 😀💚 #annieethebookiee is back with another review, and I couldn’t wait to share my thoughts on Family Doctor! This book is a true gem that grabbed me from the start and kept me hooked until the very last page. The author’s writing style is so engaging, and the way they bring the characters and story to life is simply unforgettable.
The plot is full of surprises, and just when I thought I had everything figured out, I was hit with a twist that left me speechless. The themes are so well-crafted, and the emotional depth really resonated with me throughout the book. Whether it’s a heartwarming journey, a thrilling adventure, or a thought-provoking story, this book has it all.
If you're looking for a book that will keep you turning pages and thinking long after you finish, Family Doctor is definitely one you don’t want to miss!
Until next time, keep reading and stay bookish! 💚
Thank you Netgalley.
Wow!!! Genuinely got through this book in a day, the twist at the end is not what I expected at all and throughout the book I was convinced I had it guessed...... I definitely did not. Cannot wait to start on another of this authors books. 5 out of 5 stars from me xx
The only doctor on a isolated Scottish island is putting to put her and her teenage daughter's lives back together after a tragic accident when the unthinkable occurs. As her daughter heads to the ferry she is abducted and her mother is offered an untenable bargain. Lauren will be let go if she follow some simple rules such as killing one her patients and not telling a soul Lauren is missing. A cat and mouse game soon arises as she feels she is being watched and threatened as she tries to decide how to proceed to get her daughter back safely. I enjoyed the suspense and couldn't put this book down until I reached the dramatic end. This book kept me guessing right up until the last page.
Dr Kelly receives a message - kill a patient in three days, or your daughter dies....
Family Doctor was a snappy wee thriller, fast paced, interesting characters, slightly creepy setting of a small island and a secret being covered up. Peppered with flashbacks, and a few twists, it was well written and nicely tidied up at the end. Can't wait for more from J M Dalgliesh.
This was a super quick-paced thriller. The past/present timeline was suspenseful, keeping me captivated throughout. Loved the plot premise, isolated location and Scottish jargon. I was shocked by the ending - just excellent !!
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read this advanced copy. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I thought this was a great thriller! The author did an amazing job describing the setting and it genuinely felt like I was in Scotland while reading this. I loved how I suspected one person as the kidnapper but then there was a second plot twist that caught me by surprise. Overall, a good read and I look forward to reading more from this author!
4.5****
Firstly, thanks to Netgalley and Publishers for letting me read advanced copy of this book!
I quite enjoyed this! Read within a day! The story was a little predictable, but the ending did catch me off guard. It was a fun story with a fun twist. Doctor Howletts' daughter had been taken, and the kidnapper makes one demand, Kill one of your patients within 3 days, and you can have your daughter back. It goes through the motions of trying to save her daughter and deciding whether she can go through murder or not. She's a doctor trained to save lives, not take them away, but it also goes back 2 years to something bad that happened and drove her away from her husband. It was fun piecing this story together!
I'll definitely have to check out more books by this author!
No spoilers from me for this fast paced thriller. Not for Kelly's secret, not for what happens. And not about the twist. Yes it's implausible and yes it's over the top but it will keep you turning the pages. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A good read for a rainy day.
Thank you Bookouture for a copy on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Family Doctor is a terrific thriller set on a remote island where everyone is a suspect.
Doctor Kelly receives a disturbing message…..
You have three days to kill a patient or your daughter will die.
When Lauren leaves for the mainland for an interview, Kelly expected all would be fine.
But now pandemonium erupts.
Kelly can’t tell anyone otherwise tragedy will come to her daughter.
Do they know Kelly’s secret…..
Who can be trusted….
And ultimately will she run out of time to learn the truth…..
A quick read of a fast paced thriller with many devious characters, an haunting atmosphere and climatic ending.
The suspense and tension rise as you flip the pages fast to find out the facts.
Many twists later, after reading the final sentence, you will leave the story with a smirk.
This was a really quick read, and the only thing is I wish it was longer, or that I could go back and read it again for the first time. I love books and movies where I think I have everything figured out, and then the author blows my mind! I highly recommend if you love fast paced, lots of twists and turns, and unreliable characters!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book.
