I first read The Forsyte Saga when I was in eleventh grade. I knew that it was one of my mom’s favorite books and I was curious. It took me just a moment before I became deeply immersed in the lives of this family. Since then, I have reread the novels (nine in all) that make up the series more than once. I especially have returned to the first trilogy; this is what is adapted for the stage in this title.
I wish that I was in London so that I could spend the multiple hours in the theater to see this script performed. Since I cannot, reading this allowed me to visualize and imagine it. I so enjoyed everything!
This title is perhaps most likely to be enjoyed by those with some familiarity with the story. However, I think that anyone can quickly pick up on the stories of the characters, the material focus of the Forsytes (money, money, money) and the relationships and triangles in some complicated relationships. It all reminds me of why I have loved Galsworthy’s novels.
In addition to the script, this title includes additional information about the production, the actors and more. Theater buffs will I think enjoy this attention to the details of the production.
Highly recommended to Forsyte lovers or those who may become one.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Aurora Metro for this title. All opinions are my own.
I've not read the original novels this play was based on but liked the adaptation for the most part. The way it was told was good but there were moments that didn't work for me with the characters. I would be interested in seeing how it translates to the stage which might have helped with the things that didn't work for me.
This was a really great idea, I enjoyed how this was adapted for the stage. The characters were everything that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall world that was created in this. This had that element that I was expecting from the original book and enjoyed the way this was written.
The first book in the FORSYKE SAGA was published in 1906, there are 5 volumes in the saga. I read all of them too many years ago to admit to and have reread them several times, as they are some of my favorite titles in a personal library that has grown and been added to for 50 years. This edition is a shortened, modernized version adapted for stage, but it's still a great story and probably easier for those not familiar with teh era to read. As you read, you'll recognize many pieces of the story that have been included in so many of the large ensemble productions of the era. The saga is so well worth your time, read at your leisure, it's meant to enjoyed as a life's journey.
