In a dreary gray town, kids add color and creativity to the pavement with some colorful chalk. Here, the adventure begins, and imaginations run wild. The kids draw hopscotch, trees, a butterfly, spacecraft, animals etc. This picture book is full of joy!
Starting on a drab, gray street a couple of city kids begin to transform their world with chalk. They invite their neighbours and passing kids into their games and imaginative play making an ordinary day into something extraordinary. The rhymes have a quick cadence making for a playful, engaging read and the expanding colours of the pages bring the story to life. I can’t wait to read this to my chalk-loving toddler!
Cute story about the power of imagination and where creativity can take you! Tells a great story about the importance of art and drawing for kids, and how something as simple as chalk can take you on great adventures! Also mentions the importance of keeping kids off screens, which I appreciated. Cute art style!
I loved this story about how chalk can be a wonderful source of creativity on imagination. The story starts grey, but as more ideas and chalk art is added trhe world become more colorful, I think that anology is a wonderful message for children. I love the illistrations in this book. The cover art is what initially grew me to it, and the inside illistrations continuted on just as wonderufl to make the story come to life. I loved the vivid colors and all the little added 'easter eggs' make it s fun read for little ones to point out things they find. I would ,most defeontly share this book with both my students and purchase a copy for my personal library.
Thank you NetGalley, Chelsea Tornetto & Familius for a eARC in exhcnage for my honest review.
This was a very sweet story of bringing color into our world. I loved the illustrations and story. I did feel like the end was somewhat abrupt/the transition wasn't quite clear but overall a great message and book!
This book is adorable and made me super nostalgic! It reminded me of when I used to play with chalk on my grandma's driveway and I love that this book is bringing that to another generation. I appreciated the emphasis on it being better than a screen, and hopefully it'll inspire kids to be creative and have fun outside! The illustrations perfectly matched the story!
I just read this to my children for their bedtime story and they seemed to love it!
The colors and vibrancy and illustrations in this book were great! This was cute.
Thank you for rhyming. And in a way that flows and doesn’t feel patched together.
Solid message at the end.
The only thing was there were a bunch of sentences there in the middle that all started with the word “chalk” and as an adult it could easily slip/stutter into a not great word for kids. Clear annunciation necessary.
My children love drawing with chalk and this marvelous book has inspired even more creative expression on the driveway, walkways and outside patio area. Chelsea Tornetto has written a charming book to bring joy through creativity, and the fun of working together. The rhyming verse flows wonderfully when read aloud. The clear illustrations by Laurel Aylesworth, add to the fun and adventure of the story, while also showcasing diverse characters.
Many thanks to the publisher for the digital review copy, via NetGalley. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
When I was little, I loved playing with chalk and everything related to it, including my incessant volunteering to clean the chalk boards every day in the fourth grade. So, when I saw the title “Chalk the Walk,” I couldn’t resist reading it.
Chelsea Tornetto did a fabulous job writing this cute picture book. The word length was perfect and the subject of the book will no doubt resonate with a lot of people.
Quite a few good things can be said for Laurel Aylesworth’s illustrations, namely, that they are really spot-on. The images really looked like they were made off chalk. I also particularly like how at the beginning of the book, Aylesworth chose to show the city as monochromatic, only switching to color later as the children began to chalk the city.
This is a wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated children’s book and one that I absolutely recommend to readers and libraries everywhere.
I received an ARC of “Chalk the Walk,” by Chelsea Tornetto from NetGalley and Familius in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Can I tell you how disappointed I am that I can not get a physical copy of this book until April.
This book needs to be in every child's library.
Why did I love it so much?
The book starts off with a grey scheme, and then a child brings out chalk.
The only colors in the story are the pictures drawn with chalk. If you can think of it, you can draw it. The story is short and the pictures draw the kids in.
I will be purchasing this book when it comes out!!!
Five out of five stars from my six year old. A gray world turns colorful in this story full of chalk drawings. The rhyming was beautiful.
Me and my family loved this book! My kids found it inspiring, immediately after we went out to chalk our walkways and walls with colorful designs, sun, rainbows, flowers, monsters and more.
Super heartwarming and beautifully illustrated. The rhyming pattern is well done and reads well aloud.
Chelsea Tornetto tried to revive the art of forgotten days when children used to play in the streets with the new/broken pieces of chalk. Rhythmic style of writing and clear illustrations keeps the reader engaged throughout the reading. You can finish this book in one go with your child.
Author talks about different ways in which chalk can be useful for street play. I like the most where she talks about pretend play and calk can make you really strong. Starting from the grey walls and ending with the colours of rainbow, shows the creativity. Take out some time from machine life and allow your child to have chalk the walk!
What a charming book! I love the message about how art can transform the world, bringing joy and color and firing the imaginations. Even the temporary nature of the art only inspires future creativity. That's such a positive message for a child who finds it hard to let go or gets disheartened when her creation doesn't last or has a mistake. The illustrations are delightful. I can imagine reading this to a group of students and then taking them outside to do some sidewalk chalk art.
This children’s book was absolutely adorable! I have two young kiddos and they both told me they gave it a “13/10”. It promotes creativity, friendships, imagination, and perseverance. As we read along the pages, they loved the different scenes promoting imagination and creativity. I think this may be one of our new favorite nightly reads.
Special thanks to NetGalley and Familius for allowing us to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the verses and the flow of the story. The grayed out world that comes to life with chalk was so fun. I didn't love the quick change to the chalk being washed away - it made the little one sad too. While I can appreciate that this is a reality of playing with chalk its abruptness was intense. i wished that, if including that, we could had also made mention of the fact that maybe the memories are still there? or the friends we made playing in the chalk were still our friends.
This book is a good source of inspiration for sparking creativity for sidewalk chalk designs. It encourages imagination and offers fresh ideas for reinventing everyday spaces. Perfect for reading before chalk activities or creative play with younger kids at school.
An adorable read! Great message and illustrations, perfect for a beginning reader or for a parent and child to read together
Perfect!
The illustrations are perfect. The idea of chalk bringing together kids (and adults). The rhymes. It's all perfectly executed. It even addresses making friends, imagination, and dealing with sadness when the chalk drawings wash away in the rain. I will absolutely read this with my 5-year-old, and may buy a copy for his kindergarten teacher for her classroom.
Recommended age: 3-7 years (preschool - 1st grade)
Audience: School library, classroom teacher, parents
