If you’ve ever dreamed of restoring an old camper or RV and hitting the road in style, Janelle Payne’s "DIY Camper and RV Reno" might just be the perfect book for you. I’m not exaggerating when I say this book is like having a super-talented (and very handy) friend walk you through the entire process, from choosing the right camper to making it uniquely yours.
Right off the bat, Janelle—aka Nailgun Nelly—makes it clear that you don’t have to be a pro to tackle a renovation. She breaks everything down in a way that’s easy to understand, starting with how to pick out a camper that’s worth the investment. Her advice on what to look for (and what to avoid) is a total lifesaver. I mean, who wants to buy a camper only to find out it has hidden water damage or needs a ton of expensive repairs? Janelle walks you through all the major systems—like plumbing, electrical, propane, and even roof resealing. Honestly, it’s a little intimidating at first, but she makes it manageable with step-by-step instructions and loads of photos. It feels like she’s cheering you on as you figure things out.
Once you’ve got the foundation solid, the fun stuff begins: design! This is where Janelle’s creativity really shines. She’s got projects for everything, from installing beautiful wood-look floors to painting cabinets and walls, adding wallpaper, and even building custom countertops. The book is full of ideas to help you create a space that feels like home but is also totally practical for life on the road. She’s down-to-earth and honest about her own renovation journey, sharing tips, tricks, and even a few “what not to do” moments. It’s reassuring to know that even a pro has made mistakes—and learned from them!
If you’re a total newbie to camper renovations, this book is perfect—it walks you through everything you need to know in a way that’s not overwhelming. If you’re more experienced, you’ll still find plenty of fresh ideas and design inspiration. And honestly, even if you’re just toying with the idea of camper life, "DIY Camper and RV Reno" is worth a read. It gives you a realistic sense of what’s involved, but also makes the whole process feel totally doable.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a temporary digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
It's always been a bit of a dream for me to rebuild an old camper. I've owned both a pop-up camper and a couple of conversion vans. Like so many people, my career just didn't leave the time to put into play. So when I saw this book advertised on NetGalley, I jumped at the chance to read/review it. And I am glad that I did. The author starts by helping explain how to find a good camper to renovate, depending on your needs/wishes. She then does a good job of explaining the different systems involved (carpentry, electrical, plumbing). Once that's complete, she gets into the "fun" part of designing the travel trailer depending on what kind of style you want it to project. She then goes through instructions on how to accomplish it.
All in all, it's a very informative little book, written in an easy to understand style. I think it would be valuable to anyone like me, who is interested in the idea and what all it might entail. And how can you go wrong with an author nicknamed "Nailgun Nelly"!
In these days of YouTube videos on every fixes possible, this is a prime example of the usefulness and beauty of a real book. The great photos and layout make it enjoyable, and the personal touch makes it lively.
A great book that combines practical and beautiful ideas with simplish, detailed instructions. I was initially confused by the title because I didn't know what "RV Reno" was, thinking it referred to the town in Nevada and not a buzzword for "renovation" but the clear, well-taken photos and instructions helped me out.
I especially appreciated the index and the "What to look for when buying a vintage trailer". It also had a section on "Finding your style" that was very helpful. The book seemed pretty comprehensive to me--how to look for damage, installing major systems (solar, electrical, water, propane), painting (inside and out), flooring, kitchens, bathrooms (including showers)--but I'm sure I'll need more help once I start. She also included additional information on where to find additional information and videos (many videos on her website).
I'll be recommending this book to my local library as well as buying a hard copy.
A very useful (and enjoyable!) book for anyone who is interested in getting into RVing - especially if they are newbies to the hobby and/or plan to purchase a used rig. Not only are there pretty before and after pictures, but there are detailed instructions on inspecting, repairing and renovating your new baby from end-to-end.
Renovating or converting a van is my dream! I have owned a couple of RVs and have rented too, but the perfect layout, design and spec is elusive!
This book is the answer - it's not just about the aesthetic, it explains everything. The writing is clear with pictures to aid the instructions and processes, top tips and hints of what not what to do, based on the author's experience of having made mistakes when renovating their own vehicles.
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Janelle Payne and Quarto for an ARC in return for an honest review.
I just purchased my first camper and I’ve been overwhelmed with ideas. I think this is great with giving ideas on how to turn your space into one of your own!
Thank you NetGalley for letting me read and review this book. I did just skim over it as I am not currently fitting out a van but I have been a van owner for 7 years now and know a thing or two about it as my vans are not state of the art!
I think for a total novice who wants to get into renovating a van from scratch this book is really handy with step by step on flooring, electrics, plumbing and more. There are pages filled with images (good imagery) but I don’t know how practical it would be to take this book out when you are putting everything into practice .
I think for inspiration and an idea of what goes into van life this is a good read. 3.5 for me.
