I really like Lisa’s books but sadly this wasn’t the book for me.. it didn’t seem like much a thriller to me and I didn’t really like any of the characters. I pushed through it hoping my thoughts would change, but they didn’t.
This was such a great book! I think I would have enjoyed it further if I was more integrated into the Marvel world, but for those who are, this is a great thriller book for you to check out!
I’ll admit that I’m not very familiar with all of the members of the Marvel universe, but I have read several books by Lisa Jewell and I trusted that this adventure would be good. She did not disappoint. I enjoyed this soft introduction to Jessica Jones and her occupation as a private investigator, aided by her enhanced abilities. Jessica is a complicated mess, a flawed character who strives to be self-aware. She is self-deprecating at times despite her special attributes . . . she also has a good heart, a moral compass, and a strong desire to help out wherever she can. This unique blend of qualities renders Jessica a quite relatable and endearing hero. A new case involving missing teenagers brings Jessica abroad and nearly to the edge of her sanity.
I recommend this novel for fans of Marvel, mystery, suspense, and/or young adult genres.
I thank NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of Breaking the Dark for my unbiased evaluation. 3.75 stars
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this book!
What a good book! I really enjoyed this book and had such a hard time putting it down. I enjoyed the writing style. The characters worked so well together and the plot was great.
I love Jewell's books but this one was harder to get into than the rest as it goes back and forth in time so seamlessly. It begins with Ash and her mother Nina as they receive flowers after her father Paddy is killed by a random man. And then all of a sudden we are thrust into a time four years earlier when a guy needs money from his wife. The novel continues to vacillate between two different times and we are never really sure how they are connected until the end! I did breathe a sigh of relief when it ended as Jewel always cleans up her "messes" with surprises that stay with the reader long after the book is finished!
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!

I received this Arc through NetGalley for my honest review. And here we go..
Lisa Jewel writing a Jessica Jones book, yes please sign me up.
I was a huge fan of the Netflix show, so when I saw this read I was so excited. This book didn’t disappoint my need for Jessica Jones fix. Lisa was able to capture the Jessica Jones attitude and feel.
Amber Randall’s goes looking for Jessica to hire because her twins aren’t acting like themselves. She’s worried something has happened to them, that someone did something. That they “replaced them”
Jessica travels to a small village to seek the truth. She uncovers that this story is a bit more than what she signed up for.
Evil lurking within the town, and her case is definitely linked somehow to a several-year-old case involving the abduction of three teenaged girls as well as a 30-year-old case of a New York serial killer called the Harlem Vampire.
This read had me at the edge of my seat wanting more. Seeking for more.
I'm a Marvel girl for sure, so I was excited about this book. It was not great, but it wasn't bad. The story was interesting. It was just a lackluster crime in the end for me. I wish there was more to it.
The need to be perfect and beauty products was OK I guess but like I said I wish it was more intriguing. I got bored halfway through. I like the FMC and Malcolm I want to see more with them for sure. Maybe some more cases?
Where to begin! I was so excited to start this clash between one of my favourite authors and the Marvel universe and had no idea what to expect.
It took me a while to get into this read, but I am so glad I stuck with it. Not only was the story intriguing and kept me wondering what the heck was going on, but it finished with a heartwarming message that the world needs more of these days.
I am so grateful to have had the chance to read this novel as an advanced reader copy and would recommend it to anyone who loves Marvel, or who isn’t a superhero fan but loves Lisa Jewell! Such a cool marrying of the two worlds, in the perfect fashion. Almost felt like I was living a true crime story in a parallel universe.
I didn’t realize this was a Marvel thing when I started it. I’m just not the right audience for this one.
"In her most imaginative novel yet, #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jewell (None of This Is True) launches the Marvel Crime series of thriller books for adults with an original story starring the private detective Jessica Jones.
Meet Jessica Jones: Retired super hero, private investigator, loner. She tried her best to be a shiny spandex crimefighter, but that life only led to unspeakable trauma. Now she avoids that world altogether and works on surviving day-to-day in Hell's Kitchen, New York.
The morning a distraught mother comes into her office, Jessica would prefer to nurse her hangover and try to forget last night's poor choices. But something about Amber Randall's story strikes a chord with her. Amber is adamant that something happened to her teenage twins while they were visiting their father in the UK. The twins don't act like themselves, and they now have flawless skin, have lost their distinctive tics and habits, and keep talking about a girl named Belle. Amber insists her children have been replaced by something horrible, something "perfect."
Traveling to a small village in the British countryside, Jessica meets the mysterious Belle, who lives a curiously isolated life in an old farmhouse with a strange woman who claims to be her guardian. Can this unworldly teenager really be responsible for the Randall twins' new personas? Why does the strange little village of Barton Wallop seem to harbor dark energies and mysteries in its tight-knit community?
A mother's intuition is never wrong. And Jessica knows that nothing in life is perfect - not these kids, not her on-again, off-again relationship with Luke Cage, and certainly not Jessica herself. But even as she tries to buy into the idea that better days are ahead, Jessica Jones has seen all too clearly that behind every promise of perfection trails a dark, dangerous shadow.
Breaking the Dark, the first book in the brand-new Marvel Crime series, introduces fans to a grittier, street-level side of the Marvel Universe, and will continue with original novels featuring fan-favorite characters like Luke Cage, written by S.A. Cosby, and Daredevil, written by Alex Segura."
Oh my, Lisa Jewell and Jessica Jones together!?! It's like peanut butter and chocolate, a combination we've longed for and is now a classic.
Thanks to NetGalley I was able get my hands on this early. This was a solid read and a great glimpse into the Marvel world without being too overwhelmed with super powers. The story line had lots of twists and characters were easy to get to know. The book could have been edited down a bit for length. The non-linear timelines were a bonus to the material that helped to build to twists. I am very interested in continuing the series. I am now a Lisa Jewell fan! Win-win in my book! #NetGalley #BreakingtheDarkAJessicaJonesMarvelCrimeNovel
I absolutely loved this book. It was different than my normal reads. I’ve never heard of Jessica Jones but I am looking foward to this hopefully becoming a series! It had great development. It was thrilling, suspenseful, I had to know what was happening.
Books like this can take alllllllll my money!
5 stars!
Thanks NetGalley!
I got this book because I’m a fan of Lisa Jewell, but admittedly I am not a Marvel fan. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I look forward to reading more from this series! I have family members who would absolutely love this book and it will make a great gift!
I absolutely loved this book. It’s written in the typical Lisa Jewell fashion. It’s easy to get sucked into the story, characters and wondering what is next.
Jessica Jones is hired by a distraught mother who believes her children have been replaced, following a visit with their father overseas. They have become, in a word, perfect. Gone are the imperfections of teenhood (blemishes and pores). Gone are the strange tics that make them who they are. They are completely different people. Jessica travels to the British countryside to investigate what could have caused such a change in the twins.
This was the weirdest book I've read in a while... and not in a bad way. I watched the first season of Jessica Jones and while I don't remember it well, I remember liking it a lot. The book 100% captured the feel of the show. The author did her research and really knew the characters. Even though I'm a reader who enjoys realistic reads, I was very invested in finding out what exactly was going on with the twins.
While I didn't find this book to be on the same level as Jewell's other books, it was only slightly below. A 4 instead of a 5. I believe that if she continues to explore this genre, future works will match the level of her other novels. This is a very strong Read It.
Note: I received this book from NetGalley, at no cost to myself.
When I went to a @lisajewelluk event a couple of summers ago and she dropped the news she was going to be publishing a Jessica Jones book I positively squealed!
While Jessica Jones isn’t my all time fav comic character (it’s Nightwing), she is definitely up there on the list! I adore the complexities of her character and that she is so messy but so badass at the same time.
I thought Breaking the Dark ruled, personally! It was so unique to read a comic plot line in a thriller format. As a huge fan of both genres, I thought Jewell knocked this out of the park. This definitely felt different from her other books, but in a very fun way!
I’m really excited to see what else this Marvel series brings us down the line! And a big thank you to my brother in law @frank.reads.books for buddy reading with me!
I love so many Lisa Jewell books but this just wasn’t the one for me! I loved the concept and as it started out I was excited to uncover what happened to the twins and everything else in between. I’m not a Marvel fan but wanted to give this a try. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t for me. I couldn’t connect with any character and I thought the pace was so slow with little happening even half way through. I struggled to finish it but think for the right audience, they could love this one.
I requested this ARC not knowing it was a Marvel book so I was a little worried. I shouldn’t have been. It was a really good book. I enjoyed it a lot. In this book Jessica Jones is more like a normal person and less like a super hero. She is a detective.
She meets with a mother who wants Jessica to investigate her teen twins who have returned from Europe not acting like themselves. Jessica takes the case more to humor the mother because she thinks it is probably just normal teen behavior. She quickly realizes that they aren’t acting normal at all and their behavior is strange at best.
She discovers that they are obsessed with being perfect and repeat something about “Miranda”. Jessica is determined to get to the bottom of it. What is their secret to perfection, how are they obtaining it? The twins are beautiful, their skin perfect. Meanwhile, Jessica has a secret of her own, how will she deal with it?
Very well written, I recommend it! Thanks to Lisa Jewell for making me enjoy a Marvel book. Hope you write more!
Lisa Jewell's "Breaking The Dark" was an unexpected revelation for me. As someone who typically avoids the Marvel superhero genre, I approached this novel with a degree of skepticism. However, I found myself pleasantly surprised..
I may not have initially gravitated towards a book of this genre, "Breaking The Dark" proved to be a compelling read that challenged my perceptions and left a lasting impression. I would recommend this book to others.
I love Lisa jewel books! There is definitely a reason her books are so popular! She's one hell of an author! This book surprised me, because it was a little different from her other books, but that's not really a bad thing. Another really great book that's going to blow the charts up.
