It took me a bit to get into this one as I'm not a superhero fan, but was drawn to it because I enjoy Lisa Jewell's writing. Eventually I got pulled in and wanted to find out what happened. My 13 year old (who is a superhero fan) also read and enjoyed it. Can't wait to see what S.A. Cosby does with Luke Cage's story.

Raise your hand if you saw the author, didn't read the description, and requested the book? Yes, that would be me! After realizing that I, a person who doesn't watch a lot of tv or movies and who doesn't follow the Marvel (or DC) universe, had committed herself to reading a book based on a super hero. What a wonderful surprise this book was! Ms. Jewell imbued her wonderful writing of thrillers with the additional mystery of the super hero world. I also loved the unique way in which she limited Jessica's abilities to invoke her super powers. This book was a whirlwind of the possible, the impossible, and the hopefully not possible. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I might even need to read the future books in the series!

Thank you, NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue, for the opportunity to read this book.

Unfortunately, I ended up DNFing it.
As a big Lisa Jewell fan, I was excited to dive in, but the tone felt more YA than I expected, and the plot was difficult to follow. I struggled to connect with the characters and the story, so I ultimately decided to set it aside.

I'm a Marvel fan so getting my hands on this was a dream come true. While not normally my go-to genre, Lisa Jewell was enough to make me dive in. Jessica was/is a total badass and reading this has me wanting to go back and watch the series. Probably won't rush to read more if the series continues as the flashbacks were a little rough for me personally (just not my style typically) - Lisa is superb in her writing.

I enjoyed this book! I loved watching Jessica Jones growing up, and my boyfriend is a huge Marvel fan, so we have watched most Marvel-related movies and TV shows. I enjoyed the supernatural elements, as I love reading thrillers. I really enjoyed Lisa's writing; I found it definitely made the book more enjoyable. However, it was not necessarily my favourite. I think I just prefer to watch Marvel movies than to read about it in a Novel. I have aphantasia, so it was a lot harder to visualize all of the action going on.

Thank you, NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is not my normally genre at all, but I saw Lisa Jewell’s name and thought I would try it out. This was certainly not the story for me. It was okay, but I didn’t identify to the character at all and after bringing it up to friends who read marvel and Jessica Jones, I learned she was a badass and portrayed completely different. I am happy I dipped my toes in this story, but I will be staying in my lane going forward…

Thank you to Hyperion Avenue and NetGalley for the ARC of Breaking the Dark: A Jessica Jones Marvel Crime Novel in exchange for an honest review.

First off, I must declare that I am a HUGE fan of Lisa Jewell and I’ve read almost everything of hers that has been so wonderfully put out there into the universe for us mystery and crime lovers to devour. I have to be honest, I somehow completely missed that this newest book was somehow in association with Marvel (I also must admit that I’m more than curious to understand how that happened) so when I started reading and realized that Jessica Jones was our main character, I was a little more than completely taken off guard. At that point, I hit pause on my reading and did some quick research and sure enough, this is in fact the first novel in a series that will be in association with Marvel and their cast of characters such as Luke Cage, Madame Web, and Daredevil in addition to Jessica Jones and what I assume will be many more.

Because my knowledge base of Lisa’s writing was rooted within her prior books, I had no idea how the storyline here would unfold. The answer: slow build mixed with a hint of confusion, which then morphed into a rather tantalizing si-fi(esk) storyline that kept me coming back for more until I had my pulse on what was transpiring. I also very much fell in love with Jessica’s character and she finds herself footing again and aspires to build a better life for herself.

At the start of this series, Jessica works as an undercover investigator as she is recovering from a recent fall from grace in the world of Avengers. When Jessica is hired to do an investigation into the odd behaviors exhibited by a set of teen twins who have recently returned from visiting their dad in the UK, Jessica quickly finds herself in more trouble then she’s able to get herself out of. Enter her trusty sidekick, Malcom, and love interest, Luke Cage, to help Jessica save the day and foil the latest plot poised to bring the downfall of humanity.

Although outside of what I’ve come to expect from Lisa, I really did enjoy this read in ways I didn’t expect. While I appreciate the Avengers and I’ve seen all the Marvel movies/shows, it wouldn’t normally be a read choice for me, but I came away pleasantly surprised and eager for the next installment. Well done, Lisa! I’m excited to witness the upcoming success of this series!

This was more about my personal preference than the book itself. While I knew it had superhero elements, I was encouraged by reviews from readers who don’t typically follow superheroes but still enjoyed it. The writing is solid, though it leans a bit YA at times. This isn’t your typical Lisa Jewell thriller, but it’s also not heavily superhero-driven—Jessica Jones mostly operates as a regular PI. The short chapters and dual timeline structure keep the pacing engaging. While it wasn’t quite for me, I appreciate the opportunity from NetGalley to explore a different style of storytelling.

I picked this ARC because of Lisa Jewell being the author. Usually I am not a supernatural or superpowers person but I thought it would be interesting.

I have not watched the Netflix series with Jessica Jones and her super powers, but I was intrigued that there was a series that mirrored it. I wouldn't say this one was a favorite for me because some things felt a little forced in terms of the personal relations of Jessica but it was an interesting read. Towards the end I just wanted it to end which isn't the most glowing recommendation but...

Breaking the Dark by Lisa Jewell is a Jessica Jones Marvel Crime novel. I'm not such a Marvel fan and so I am not familiar with this heroine figure, hence, it took a while to get into the book. The supernatural aspect was also unexpected. However, once I got into, I couldn't wait to see what happened. I read the first half of the book in 3 weeks and the second half in 2 hours - it's that kind of book. Quite interesting and the ending was satisfying.
I got the ARC from Hyperion Avenue via Netgalley. All opinons expressed are mine

I went into this book knowing nothing about Marvel Comics, superhero Jessica Jones, or her back story. I wanted to try the book because, of course, it is Lisa Jewell however there was some trepidation that I may have to dnf due to not connecting with the story. Was I wrong! You don’t need to know the back story or have knowledge of the Marvel Universe to be drawn in. This is a fat paced, read in one sitting book.

Jessica Jones is a retired superhero turned private investigator who drinks too much, sleeps around and eats nothing but junk food. She is hired by a well to do therapist to investigate what caused her teenage twins to behave strangely after returning from a summer in the UK with their father. Jessica is at first hesitant until she observes the twins’ strange behavior herself and knows she has to get to the root cause. From New York to Essex UK, follow Jessica as she searches for the answers all her questions.

Thank you to Hyperion and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read the ebook.

I was excited to read a different kind of book than I’m used to from Lisa Jewell and it did not disappoint. She nailed Jessica’s rough around the edges personality perfectly. The investigation/plot part of the book was great, it had a lot of different parts to it but wasn’t confusing. Gave off the Marvel vibe for sure. I also really liked that it touched on some personal things Jessica had been through and was dealing with. Definitely would recommend ! I’m hoping she writes some more about Jessica and adds more of the other Marvel characters we all love. Thank you for letting me read this ! Finished it in two days !

I’m not the biggest marvel fan but found myself enjoying this still! Was an enjoyable and fun read. The flashbacks were a little confusing for me at first but it all came together at the end.

I finished this book yesterday and had to sit with my thoughts before writing an "official" review. To start with, I am not a superhero/crime fighting comic fan. The reason I gave Breaking the Dark a chance was because I am a huge Lisa Jewell fan. Like every one of her books is an instant read for me.

I am going to say, since I know little about the Marvel universe, particularly the Jessica Jones character, I am not going to rate the book on that aspect of the story. I don't think I would be a fair judge of Jewell's portrayal of Jessica Jones considering I am not familiar with the character. That being said, I do think Jewell did a good job of walking the line between a thriller and the "action-hero" we think of in relation to Marvel. The premise of this novel was intriguing (hence why I even read) and I found myself wanting to see how it all resolved. While not a standard Jewell thriller, I think there are still nuggets of mystery that kept me wanting more.

All that being said, I still don't think I was the right audience for this book. Honestly, I am not sure who the audience is or why this Marvel-thriller series is being developed - is there a demand? Overall, I don't think I will continue the series because I do not feel a connection to the characters and the ambiguity of the origin on these superhero powers.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Jessica Jones is a retired super hero turned private investigator hired to solve an interesting mystery regarding twins who have turned into completely different people post summer trip to the UK. Jessica Jones takes a trip to the UK and learns a lot about the current situation of the twins tying into some old history regarding a girl named Belle.

This book was a bit slow and not super twisty like Lisa Jewells usual books, but I did enjoy it nonetheless. I enjoyed the supernatural part of it even though I don’t gravitate toward books with this aspect. I appreciated the dual point of view, the story telling from the past, and how everything came together in the end. It was a pleasant adventurous read, and I always enjoy Lisa Jewell’s writing style.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue for a copy of this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is such a fun book for any Marvel fan. Lisa Jewell's books are always attention grabbing and fast and this one was no different.

I received this ARC from NetGalley for a review.

Lisa Jewell is one of my favorite authors. I didn't realize this was a Marvel Crime Novel before I read it. I'm not a huge Marvel person so I was a little nervous about how I would like it. I can say though that I really liked this book. The story was different from anything I've read before. It makes you think that with the way AI and the world is, something like this could happen. Maybe not as extreme but in a way. I loved that I still got the Lisa Jewell that I love with reading her other books. I would definitely read other Marvel Crime Novels and can hopefully see where Jessica Jones goes next.

I picked this book up because I've enjoyed previous Lisa Jewell books that I have read, I love Marvel, and I've watched Jessica Jones' show/spin offs. However, I think that love tainted my enjoyment of the book.
As I was reading, I could definitely hear Jessica's voice as the TV voice. It felt like her. but then they added the pregnancy and I was a bit checked out.. not my favourite trope and I honestly don't think I was reading for character development, but more so for the adventure and powers as I know it.
Jessica in the book was really just a detective and featured some characters from the show/comics including Malcom, Luke Cage, Madame Web and Danny Rand. I feel like the story would have done well on it's own without the Marvel references, and I would have enjoyed it better as a mystery. I did enjoy the mystery aspect of it and the AI/Quantum Physics. I am giving this 3 stars because it was good.

Thank you Hyperion Avenue for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

In BRAKING THE DARK, Lisa Jewell takes on Marvel's Jessica Jones, a retired superhero who is now a Private Investigator. Her next case is a distraught mother who is concerned about her twin teenage kids who came back from a summer trip with their fathers in the UK, a trip that was supposed to be a fun and carefree vacation, but now seems to have had a darker undertone. The kids are now acting very weird. Please find out what happened.

Even though the beginning felt a bit slow and sluggish, I was interested from the beginning, and halfway through the story, the pace picked up. The premise was really good, and the characters were interesting. I liked the multiple timelines and POVs, and as the timeline gets closer to the present, the suspense picks up as well.

For those who are fans of Marvel and Lisa Jewell, this book is a must-read. It offers a unique blend of superhero action and the gripping storytelling that Jewell is known for. If you're a fan of superheroes, this book is definitely worth your time.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue for providing me with this ARC. And, of course, to Lisa Jewell for yet another captivating read. I can't help but wonder, could there be more to come?

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy. Unfortunately I DNF this book. I tried a few times and could not connect with the characters. I was hoping to read more and change my mind, but I just couldn’t continue.
