An adorable, scientific graphic novel narrated by Grimpy, a Dumbo Octopus. For anyone looking to get more in-depth knowledge (no pun intended) on our favorite cephalopods or if you are wanting to expand your science vocabulary - this book makes learning fun!
I'm a Dumbo Octopus! is a very informative book, introducing the reader to many facts about the many different types of cephalopods (octopuses, squids, cuttlefish, and nautiluses), such as how they deal with predators, mating, and much more! Before reading this, I had no idea what the difference between tentacles and arms were! This book is very entertaining and a must have for any with a love of the deep sea! I think younger readers will especially like the storyline of the main character, Grimpy, who searches for what makes them unique.
This book is very educational and would be a great addition to any grade levels library or classroom. It's super informative on the subject of cephalopods. I personally didn't even know about the animal group. I was extremely impressed with the information that was provided in this book. The graphics and visuals are eye catching and will keep the attention of any child of any age when they are trying to learn about cephalopods. I would highly recommend this book to any child in my life once they are of the age to understand and read this book. I would even consider buying a copy for my goddaughter when it's published.
Full disclosure, since I first learned of the lesser-known Cuttlefish as an adult, I’ve always enjoyed when they are included in a book. Even with this slight bias, I’ll admit this books does an excellent job of explaining all types of Cephalopods, including Cuttlefish, Squids, Octopuses and Nautiluses. The graphic novel format worked really well for the content and the illustrations were detailed and well-done. My 6 year old loved the entire story which also prompted questions and discussion. Recommended for ages 5-9. This book would be an excellent addition to a library, classroom or home.
Thank you to NetGalley, Anne Lambelet and Graphic Universe for the DRC.
Everyone knows how much I love octopuses! I think they are the most fascinating animal on the earth, And I LOVE how science evolves, we learn more and more about how incredibly smart and complicated they are! When I saw this title, I know I needed it in my life. Poor little Grimpy, the dumbo octopus narrator of this graphic novel, travels closer to the surface to explore the world of cephalopods, but as he does, he doesn't know what makes himself special. It takes a team for him to realize that he's just as mysterious and complicated as all the cephalods that he showcases.
What I learned: octopuses do not have tentacles, they have arms. Tentacles have the suckers on the end on a club and arms have them all the way up. I've been wrong this whole time! Some squids can adjust their colors so one side is one color like red and the other side is white! Cuttlefish are super complicated and can shift into 75 color combos. The blanket octopus has the biggest size difference between male and female in the animal kingdom.
This graphic novel made me happy. If you love octopuses and just a happy, educational read... this is for you!
I loved this book. The art style was adorable and it was very informative. I love the dumbo octopus species, so I can't wait for others to fall in love with them as well!
The octopus is my favorite animal of all time and it was fun to read this with my kids and learn about the animal!
It was very informative, the drawings were adorable and my kids truly enjoyed this book.
This is a fun kid's book that not only has an interesting story with the main little character but is also very educational as the book teaches you about all the different types of Octopus in the ocean even our main little character who does not see how unique they are told all the other Octopus join together to tell them about themselves. Great book for kids or even adults who want to learn more about all the different octopus in the world!
ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE
the dumbo octopus has been my favorite animal for YEARS, and it's so fun to see it recognized in a children's book
and, as a children's librarian, i can say with certainty that i know a very specific group of children who will love this
thank you to NetGalley and Lerner Publishing Group for the ARC
(and yes, i am counting a tiny children's graphic novel towards my 2024 reading goal. we listen, and we don't judge)
Right off the bat, I will say that this book is utterly bursting with educational value. The author packs so much into such a simple book, without the overall book being too overwhelming. This allows readers to absorb all of the information that the author is including, which is amazing. It's amazing because all of the information in this book is so fascinating, and I even learned a few things! I have no doubt that young readers will adore cephalopds and learning about them after reading this book. Even further, the format of this book (graphic novel/comic) makes it even more engaging and fun. All of the cephalopods are so adorable and colorful, I love it! Lastly, the tone of this book changed and progressed often, which allowed this informational book to also be meaningful and full-bodied. What I mean by this is the dumbo octopus seemingly has no special traits like the other cephalopods, but friends come together to show that everyone is special in their own unique way. Put simply, this book has a lot of layers that work nicely together, like a parfait.
Bravo!
Such a cute way to educate and entertain. We love all things nature and sea life so this was a natural pick for us. What I did not know was that once we started reading, we would be learning a LOT while understanding that everyone has their talents. This was amazingly illustrated to keep my littles interested and entertained. We learned a life lesson, learned new facts about octopi; and was laughing. A mom could not ask for a better book.
I was stunned by how many pages this contained since this was a bedtime read, but we flew threw it and really enjoyed. Great work.
Thank you Anne Lambelet, NetGalley, and Lerner Publishing Group.
I learned a ton about this animal. I am not as familiar with the Dumbo Octopus so I was so excited to see a graphic novel all about it. The art is adorable and made the science so much easier to digest. Cute book.
4 stars
An entertaining yet informative book about cephalopods. The graphics are very cute and colorful, and the facts are presented in a way that doesn't feel like you're reading a research article on cephalopods.
Deep sea creature graphic novels seems like a bit of a niche but I'm delightfully surprised by another wonderful option! After reading Science Comics: Deep-Sea Creatures my son (6) and I were looking for another great graphic novel that would be, as the authors of Deep-Sea Creatures puts it, edutainment: education and entertainment in one. This is exactly what this book offers too! I'm a Dumbo Octopus! doesn't just teach you about dumbo octopuses, as the title might suggest, but rather teaches you about many cephalopods (a word I've learned from these incredible titles). The dumbo octopus acts as the narrator/tour guide, telling us all about other cephalopods and all of the cool things about them. As it goes on, the dumbo octopus gets discouraged: He doesn't have any of the cool things the other cephalopods do. He finally has his meltdown, bemoaning that he's just not as great as the others, when the other cephalopods join him and reassure him. In fact, they tell him that they so appreciated how he highlighted all of their cool features that they'll do the same for him and help him see how wonderful he is. If you have a kiddo who loves learning, especially about ocean life, this is a MUST BUY. If you have graphic novel lovers (don't we all?) then this is a good add to your collection. I'd recommend for kids K-4 and any public or elementary school library or classroom. Highly recommend!
I received this DRC from NetGalley.
This book is so cute. The illustrations and coloring were done really well. Even on pages with a lot going on, the artwork is clear and not overwhelming. I definitely learned some cephalopod facts. I think the only thing I might have changed would be to list kingdom on top down to genus instead of the other way around. Parents will probably have to help their kids with pronouncing some of the big words, but I think this would be a good book for any child interested in ocean creatures.
I think this book will be absolutely perfect for the early grade kiddos who want to get their hands on more science information! It's a sweet story woven into lots of facts about cephalopods, and the illustrations are awesome. A graphic novel was a great way to go about keeping this engaging for kids.
This didn't feel like nonfiction because I was grinning the whole time I was reading this. It's just so cute and fun and easy to follow. The pictures are adorable. This is the kind of book that could help kids really enjoy science. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
The CUTEST nonfiction graphic I've read in a while! Grimpy the dumbo octopus gives a tour of all the things that make cephalopods special. 9 brains, blue blood, chromatophores, list list goes on and on!
The illustrations in this one are fabulously cutesy while the dialog is both informational and engaging. A must-buy for elementary libraries!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
This book is everything I look for to buy in kids books. I may be a bit biased however, as I'm naturally drawn to anything oceanic in nature. First I will say, I LOVE the color scheme used in I'm Dumbo Octopus! It is very calming and pleasing to the eye. My youngest kiddo is 8 and he really enjoys nonfiction books as well as graphic novel style. When I showed him this he thought it was "awesome!" We both enjoyed learning all about the different types of cephalopods and I even learned about some I didn't know. He feels super smart that he can use the word cephalopod! I appreciate that the language is not dumbed down and still provides a bit of a challenge. This is a wonderful little book and I cannot wait to purchase it for friend's kids and school libraries!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to have my son and I to read an early copy of I'm a Dumbo Octopus!
I am such a huge nerd when it comes to octopuses and all cephalopods, as well as a big comic/graphic novel fan so this was a DREAM come true. The art is adorable when we're following Grimpy's lessons, but also very beautiful and educational when the author and artist go more in depth into the science and facts about the each cephalopod. The writing is funny and endearing while containing a lot of solid and interesting information as well. This is a book I'd definitely recommend for upper middle grade given some of the scientific terms, but I'd also throw this at all my adult friends too so that they could learn more about these wonderful creatures.
I hope to pick up a physical copy of I'm a Dumbo Octopus! when it hits the shelves!
