**3-Star Review: *A.D. 30* by Ted Dekker**

*AD 30* by Ted Dekker is a historical novel set in the time of Jesus, following Maviah, a Bedouin slave and outcast who embarks on a journey across the desert to save her people. With the guidance of two fierce allies, she faces trials and dangers that test her faith and resilience. Along the way, she encounters teachings that challenge her understanding of power, purpose, and redemption.

Dekker’s portrayal of the ancient Middle Eastern landscape is vivid and immersive, painting a detailed picture of the harsh beauty of the desert and the cultural dynamics of the time. Maviah’s journey is filled with struggles that make her a sympathetic character, and Dekker skillfully interweaves themes of faith and personal transformation.

However, the pacing can feel slow, particularly in sections heavy with religious reflection and dialogue. While Dekker’s spiritual insights are meaningful, some readers may find that these elements slow down the plot, creating a less dynamic narrative. Additionally, Maviah’s encounters with familiar biblical figures can sometimes feel predictable, which diminishes the suspense.

Overall, *A.D. 30* is a thoughtful and heartfelt tale with strong historical detail, though its pacing and focus on religious themes may appeal most to readers specifically interested in spiritual historical fiction.

This book was utterly engaging and fascinating that I really enjoyed thoroughly. This is a different aspect of Ted Dekker than you usually see with his other books. I loved the character development and the great care that was taken in researching.

I enjoy reading Ted Dekker books. I enjoyed this one, but it wasn't my favorite. I am not used to him writing historical fiction. I enjoy his thrillers much more.
