Kid review: It was funny. It was annoying for the dragon! The end is a cliffhanger.
Mum review: We enjoyed this story. It had a nice rhyming rhythm and great illustrations. The pictures had a lot of details, so you could find little extra jokes and side stories in them. The story itself was fun - a dragon tries all the ways he can think of to eat a snow cone without it melting. He asks various animals and people for help.

This was such a cute children's story! I loved the images as well as the storyline. I particularly prefer when children's stories rhyme as this one did. It makes it more playful and memorable for the reader. Will definitely recommend this one to parents and teachers of young ones!

What does it take for a dragon to be able to eat a snow cone? 🍧 Apparently a lot more than they anticipated. Such a great book about perseverance. The art work is engaging and beautifully drawn. My two year old kept saying “it’s so silly”. The author presented an important and impactful message in a kid friendly manner including the full range of experienced emotions when faced with adversity.

I received a free eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A delightful companion to both the Dragons Love Tacos books, as well as the classic If you give a mouse a cookie series. If a dragon wants a snow cone…what is he to do? Lots of fun scenarios in this one as the dragon tries many different tactics to enjoy a snow cone before his fiery breath puts it out. The rhyming is fun (although I feel like it scans weird at points?), and it’s a *little* long for storytime, but it might be fun for summer when the crowd skews a bit older.

I read this book with my three year old daughter. She loved it! She enjoyed the pictures and the story, and the rhyming used in the story. The pictures are cute and fun, with a lot to review with younger children working on their words. I did feel like the book was a bit long, but that is likely a personal preference. Overall, I would recommend this book.

This was absolutely adorable, the dragon is such a cute character. I loved learning about all the different habitats and animals and seeing the resolution at the end and a set up for another book!! So clever.

Thank you Applesauce Press and NetGalley for the digital ARC.

A fun book for kids who like all things dragons.

The illustrations are colorful and eye catching. The story itself may have been more enjoyable if it was a little shorter. I think many of pages could have had their wording simplified. There were also several times when the rhyming was awkward.

Children who love dragon books will enjoy this one.

Dragons don’t eat snow cones was a cute book and fairly easy to read. There were a few parts that I feel could’ve rhymed better, but overall the book flowed well. The illustrations were cute and colorful. The ending wrapped the storyline up well and left it open for the next book. Overall, it’s a cute book. My child enjoyed it.

This book is beyond adorable!! It is excellent as a read aloud. However, some of the words used throughout the book would make it hard for younger readers or English learners to read on their own. This book is super fun paired with a STEM activity asking students to ponder a way that the dragon can successfully eat the marshmallow. Students absolutely loved the goofiness of this story! Dragons are always a fan favorite among young students!!

Such a fun book! My kids LOVE “Dragons Love Tacos” and I’ve noticed that since that book came out there are lots of dragon picture books. This is one of the better dragon picture books I’ve read. It rhymes and has a dragon who just wants to eat a snowcone, which proves problematic. My 3yo really liked it and stayed engaged even though it felt long to me. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!

Are you ever curious about why dragons can't eat snow cones? "Dragon's Can't Eat Snow Cones" tells the story of a very frustrated dragon who just wants to eat a snow cone. "When a dragon wants a snow cone he must proceed with care, in case a fireball melts it all until there's nothing there!" Seeing that other people who eat snow cones might be able to assist, Dragon decides to ask them for assistance. The dragon asks a wise old owl, some fish, a fisherman, a penguin, a bat, a squirrel, and a pirate ship. All of them had advice on how to eat a snow cone. All of the suggestions failed. In frustration, dragon tossed one last snow cone up a mountain just as all hope seemed lost. When the snow cone started rolling down the mountain, it grew and grew until it reached the bottom and slammed into the snow cone stand. The HUGE snowball became one GIGANTIC snow cone. In the end, the dragon was able to get a snow cone.

“Dragons Can’t Eat Snow Cones” follows an unnamed dragon on his journey to discover a way to finally eat a delicious snow cone before it melts.

This story was humorous and had fun illustrations. Throughout the tale, readers tag along as the dragon interacts with and takes the advice of other animals to find the best way to eat a snow cone. Children will learn the value of seeking advice when one encounters a problem they are struggling to solve.

While the rhyming in the story was cute, there were times that the rhythm of the rhymes felt strange to read and had me stumbling over the sentence as I tried to keep a consistent cadence. The story also felt just a tad long for the age range it is written for, and I feel it may not be able to hold children’s attention to the last page.

Overall, this book is a great pick for any parents or teachers with kiddos who love dragons and silly quests.

Loved the illustrations, kudos to Pauline Gregory. 5 stars for illustrations.

Loved the rhyming text by Amanda Sobotka, that seems to make the book more enjoyable when reading to little ones.

What I didn't like about the book is that around halfway, the dragon interacts with squirrels and burrowing rodents. My interest waned in these pages both times when I was reading Dragons Can't Eat Snow Cones. I enjoyed other parts, pirates and penguins. (3 stars for rodents.)

Many thanks to NetGalley and Cider Mill Press - Applesauce Press for the opportunity to read the advance read copy of Dragons Can't Eat Snow Cones in exchange for an honest review. 40 pages. Publication date is Jan 28, 2025.

A fun picture book! DRAGONS LOVE TACOS is a big hit at my library, and so I have a feeling that dragons eating snow cones would be just as popular. I particularly enjoyed the illustration style, and also appreciated the rhyme scheme; I'm always on the lookout for new storytime titles, and I could very easily see myself reading this one out loud.

The listing of different animals that the dragon asks for help goes on for a little bit too long and might lose some young attention spans along the way, but I do love how each suggestion gets a little more goofy every time. Overall, a colorful and delightful read.

This was such a fun children’s book. My daughter liked that the main character was a dragon and thought it was so funny when his plans would go awry. It teaches a good lesson to never give up and to get creative to succeed. We loved seeing all the animals giving the dragon advice and trying to help him get his snowcone.

Arc Review:
Overall Rating: 4 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cover Rating: 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Illustrations: 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was written by Amanda Sobotka and Illustrated by Pauline Gregory.

The story was good even though the rhymes were a bit off at times.

I loved all the illustrations in this book, I loved the colours used. I found the pictures to be engaging and they fit the story perfectly.

This book teaches kids the importance of problem solving through trial and error and the importance of not giving up after the first failed attempt you’ve got to keep trying until you succeed.

Thank you NetGalley, publishers, the author and the illustrator for the advanced readers copy of this book, I highly enjoyed and I think this makes a good kids book.

I love these books and this is going in the collection once it is published on Jan 28, 2025. The Dragon so badly wants to eat a snow cone, but it keeps melting. The story takes him through his adventures on trying to eat it before it melts. The illustrations are so eye catching and my children thought the book was very funny.

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for this ARC! I read this to my 3-year-old, and we had lots of fun. As soon as we finished it, he said, "Let's read it again!" So it passed with flying colors in his book. ;)

As for me, as some others have mentioned, I felt that it was a little on the long side. There were also a few places that the rhyming didn't flow as naturally, making the rhythm a little awkward. However, the art was super fun and the story engaging for kiddos. Its one I'll definitely return to with my own kids! :)
