This was a very intriguing short story and (like many short stories), I desperately wish it was longer! It almost seems like it was a teaser for something bigger. I do wish that, in the limited space we were given, it would have delved a bit deeper into the magic.

This short story follows Olivia, the assistant to her husband who is a celebrated magician. His tricks are so amazing that even Olivia can’t figure them out, as much as she has tried. But something about her past nags at her, as she doesn’t remember anything prior to her wedding when she was involved in an accident that stole her memories from her. She is tired of her husband telling her what to do. When she uncovers secrets from the past, she decides to try things her way for a change.

This was another quick and fun read. I loved the premise, only wish the ending wasn’t so rushed as it was the climax I was waiting for.

Thank you to NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing for a gifted audio version of this novella. I did enjoy listening to this on audio.

I went into this knowing it was a short story, but I had no idea just how short. By the time I really started getting into it, the story abruptly ended. If I'm not mistaken, it's a prequel to Sarah Penner's upcoming release, The Amalfi Curse, and if that's the case then the book should be very interesting. The narrator, Helen Laser, has an engaging voice and she kept my attention from beginning to end. If you're looking for something quick and entertaining then you'll probably love this little short story.

Very underwhelming. I am assuming this is a lead up to the new book?!? This felt sloppy and we don’t have enough information to make it flow.

Helen Laser did what she could to bring it to life.

The Conjurer’s Wife by Sarah Penner

Thank you to @brilliancepublishing, @netgalley, and @sarah_penner_author for the opportunity to read this #advancedlistenercopy in exchange for my #honestaudiobookreview! This is available now on multiple platforms.

This combines the an eery paranormal element that magic shows did as a kids with the “hell yes, girl!” feminist energy that gets your blood pumping. This pulled me in from the very beginning and I’d love to get to explore these characters more in a full length novel. I highly recommend for anyone looked for a fast-paced, high stakes read!

The Conjurer's Wife is a spellbinding short story that blends historical fiction with a touch of the supernatural. The tale centers on Beatrice, the wife of a renowned 19th-century magician, who discovers her husband’s darkest secret—a pact with otherworldly forces that threatens both their lives. As Beatrice delves into her husband’s hidden world of magic and danger, she must make a choice that could save or destroy them both.

In 1820s Venice, magician’s wife Olivia rebels against her role as his assistant, uncovering a secret that threatens to destroy his career and their marriage. A suspenseful and surprising story, it’s smart and fun to read. I enjoyed the audiobook narration.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

This a perfect short story to cleanse your palette between books. I didn’t realize it was a short story but the ending today was a nice surprise. I was given the opportunity to listen to the audio 🎧 and the narrator did a great job. Although the story really is only in the point of view for two characters she did well on keeping each character’s voice consistent.

Set in 1820s Venice, The Conjurer’s Wife is a captivating short story that combines intrigue, mystery, and transformation. Olivia, the wife and assistant of the famous illusionist Oscar Van Hoff, spends her days reciting lines and playing a supporting role in her husband's grand performances. Yet, beneath the surface of her glamorous life, there’s a growing sense of dissatisfaction, especially when she uncovers a secret that threatens to unravel everything Oscar has worked for. Penner skillfully creates a rich atmosphere of tension and wonder, pulling readers into a world where nothing is quite as it seems. The story is short but brimming with mystery and emotional depth, leading to a satisfying and empowering conclusion for Olivia.

While the story’s brevity leaves little room for deep character exploration, it does succeed in delivering a quick yet immersive experience. Olivia’s arc is compelling, her quiet rebellion against the constraints of her life making for an intriguing narrative. The setting of Venice and the backdrop of magic add a layer of mystique, but at times, the story’s focus on the big reveal comes at the expense of deeper development. Nonetheless, The Conjurer's Wife offers a delightful, thought-provoking escape, particularly for readers who enjoy stories of personal empowerment and hidden secrets.

This was such a captivating short! Very descriptive writing, so it's easy to immerse yourself in the story and get transported to 1820s Venice. Surprising twist near the end that made my jaw drop.

Helen Lazer did an amazing job bringing this story to life for the audiobook. Pacing was great. However, voice volume and tone were a little uneven at times, so it made certain parts a little jarring.

Overall, though, it was an amazing listen and a great little short story!
