This is a gripping story that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish, the plot is filled with unexpected twists and turns, making it impossible to predict what will happen next.
The writing is both engaging and suspenseful, with well-developed characters that add depth to the narrative.
The pacing of the novel is great, with just the right amount of tension to keep readers hooked without feeling overwhelmed.

Sometimes.... It's all in the cover.
I mean, let's just take a step back and admire this beauty. She sure will look swell on my shelf!
Sally-Anne Martyn is back with her THIRD publication. After reading (and loving), both The Clinic and The Home, I knew I HAD to have an early peek.
Im a super fan of dual time lines and loved the flash backs! The character development was on point and I was instantly hooked. Martyn has a way with her words that she strikes the hot plate right on your soul.
Addicting, jaw dropping and super twisty, The Beauty Queen, is she sure to be a hit amongst thriller fans.
Check out this teaser :
Forty years ago
It should have been the happiest night of her sister’s life. When she was crowned Miss Sunshine Sands.
But that was the last time she was seen alive, and all they ever found was her pink satin sash washed up on the shore.
Now
Journalist Zoe Kincade arrives in the rundown seaside town of Sunshine Sands to report on this year’s talent show. The motionless Ferris wheel blurs into the dark sea beyond and polystyrene chip trays bounce along the pavement.
She checks into the Forget-Me-Not hotel, a faded Edwardian terrace that has seen better days.
The place her beautiful older sister Jane stayed the night she disappeared.
Zoe has spent forty years trying to block out the pain. The aftermath of that night destroyed her chance of a happy marriage and living in any kind of peace.
She was only a little girl when Jane vanished. She just remembers how much she loved her big sister.
Now Zoe is determined to find out what really happened. She will make them pay for taking Jane from her.
And no amount of glitter and sparkle can hide the dark truth of that night.

Forty years ago, her sister was crowned Miss Sunshine Sands. Hours later, she's gone without a trace, only her sash is found on the beach. Now, Zoe has returned to the small seaside town to cover the revived talent show but also to find out the truth from all those years ago. What happened to Jane and do the secrets lie in Sunshine Sands?
There's just something about Martyn's writing, isn't there?! This was such a treat to read and I really did find it difficult to put down! Through dual timelines and POVs, the reader is taken on a journey of mystery, suspense and, at times, profound sadness. This book does not shy away from some troubling topics involving young woman, which is a sad reality for some.
I also thought the setting for this was perfect, a small seaside town where outsiders are more than welcome as long as they don't pry. Sally's previous books, The Home and The Clinic, were set in very secluded, eerie places so this was a nice change but still unsettling when it got going! I was so engaged with this one and was so eager to get to the end and discover what really happened all those years ago. When I tell you, the chills when I got to the end! An finale I didn't foresee and one you won't forget!
Big thank you to NetGalley& joffeebooks for this digital copy!

This is the second book I've read by Sally-Anne Martyn, and it did not disappoint. Sally-Anne is a great writer, giving the reader enough information for them to get a good idea of the characters and the environment, whilst not being overly descriptive.
The Beauty Queen is written in two time periods, 1982 and 2022.
1982 - A beauty pageant in a seaside town ends in Miss Sunshine Sands disappearing, presumed dead.
2022 - A journalist is sent to the same seaside town, to cover it's first beauty pageant after 40 years. What will she discover? How is she linked? Why do the town's residents insist on keeping secrets?
This is a story of the disappearance of a young, blonde, beauty pageant winner, sexual exploitation of young women, and how the perpetrators get their comeuppance. I read this book very quickly, as it was so well written, and found the story gripping. I would definitely recommend this book, and others by the same author.

Okay, Sally. I see you. Writing gripping thrillers that I can’t put down, and leave me feeling all the emotions.
The Beauty Queen follows Zoe, whose sister Jane disappeared after participating in a beauty pageant. What follows is a tale, alternating between two timelines, of determination, grief and good old girl power. It’s told in Sallys classic writing style, with the author successfully creating a tense atmosphere packed full of twists and turns.
The seaside setting is also incredibly beautiful, and so easily pictured. I loved the side characters, who themselves were also incredibly detailed and full of depth.
Man, I bloody loved this book.

This book alternates between 1982 and 2022 where Zoe is covering a beauty pagent that was the last place her sister was ever seen - the back and forth between the two times was written very well and the book kept me guessing and I was suprised by the ending -
Thanks netgalley for the arc

This was an interesting story alternating between 2022 and 1982 and about the unbreakable bond between two sisters. Zoe was determined to find out what really happened in 1982 when her sister, Jane, disappeared from a Seaside town after being named the winner of a beauty pageant.

This was a really fun and twisty read. I loved the setting of the book so much. It was told in a dual timeline format, with one timeline being set in the English coastal town of Sunshine Sands in the 1980s, when it was in its prime, and the other being set in the same location in the current day.
The main characters were well developed, and you could understand their motivations. I feel like this was important considering the book centered around a beauty queen, and it is easy for authors to create beauty queen characters who are vapid and one dimensional, which Jane, the beauty queen central to the story, was not.
Zoe Kincade is a journalist who arrives in Sunshine Sands, seemingly to cover the talent show the town is holding. Her real reason is to find out what happened to her beloved sister, Jane, who disappeared from the same place after winning a beauty pageant forty years ago.

Forty years after her sister's diseappearance, Zoe Kincade has returned to the seaside town of Sunshine Sands. Officially, she's there to report on this year's beauty pageant, but what she really wants is to find out what happened to Jane after she was crowned the winner. I loved the setting, with its aging buildings and faded attractions. Even in the flashbacks to the 80s, the place is far past its prime. The locals are determined to protect their secrets and Zoe and her prying questions aren't welcome. Unfortunately, I felt like by the end the plot was slowly dragging along to a less than satisfying conclusion.

Great book. Was super interested from the start. Cant wait to read more. Was not a fan of the main character.

Sally is one of my Auto buys so was very excited to read this book.
Told in dual timelines told about two sisters one a beauty Queen called jane and her sister Zoe Kincaid.
Jane went missing after winning the beauty contest in the 1980s never to be seen again nobody knew what happened to her. Zoe is a reporter and they are having another contest in Sunshine sands she stays at the same place where as a child she stayed before with her sister and mother.
Dolly still owns the Forget me Not hotel and Zoe starts to dig around about what happened to her sister,
I really liked the Twitter Posts in the book.
I liked that some of the people from the past came back into the story.
I found this a gripping read the ending was brilliant i didn't see that coming.
Well done to the Author on another brilliant book can not wait for the next one.

Zoe returns to a hotel where her sister disappeared 40 years earlier after winning a beauty contest. It is a dual-timeline story told by both sisters and delves into what happened and gives plenty of twists and intrigue to keep you interested. It is a good story and one I enjoyed but there were a few flaws.
Many characters, long descriptions and at times a bit slow but overall it had the suspense and thrills you would want and kept me turning the pages (even though I skipped through some of the long-winded areas of the book). It is well written but just needed a bit of tightening up to make it a great read.
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

This was the first book that I have read by Sally-Anne Martyn, and I must say that I look forward to reading more works by her. I could not put this book down. In 2022, Zoe travels to the same hotel/ destination her sister Jane had disappeared from after having won a beauty contest. Zoe sets out to find out the the truth about what happened to her sister.
Thank you Sally-Anne Martyn and Netgalley for my ARC copy.

The beauty queen by Sally-Anne Martyn.
I loved the cover and blurb of this book. This was a good read. This is my second book ive read from this author. I did like Zoe. I did like Dolly. Trevor i wasn't sure about. Twisty and gripping. I did guess who it was. I did like the ending.

Sally Anne-Martyn is a new author for me, and I was happy to read The Beauty Queen as the description really intrigued me. What a page-turner! It was not smart of me to start this book with a long to do list before the holidays as I could not stop reading this. The story switches between 2022 and 1982 as Zoe, now a journalist, visits the seaside town where her sister Jane disappeared after winning the Miss Sunshine Sands beauty contest in 1982. This is a psychological thriller with some deep and creepy characters, and it can bring the emotion out with the 1982 flashback chapters. Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books for the opportunity to provide review. All opinions are my own. I highly recommend this one! 5 stars Publication Date: Dec 18, 2024

2⭐️ Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for an advanced copy of The Beauty Queen.
Zoe has returned to Sunshine Sands to cover the beauty pageant but she is also there to figure out what happened to her sister forty years ago after she won the pageant. Little does she know the lies and secrets she will uncover while she is there.
This book was so difficult to get into to. There were a lot of characters to keep track of and the writing style was not my favorite. The whole storyline was very confusing to try to follow. I was not a fan of this book.

I love a dual time line perspective and this book showcases how well this can work when telling a story over time. Slightly noir at times, there was an ominous sense of seediness around some of the pageantry and the way some of the characters engaged. I think this was very well written and cleverly done in terms red herrings and twists,

I really like Sally-Anne Martyn; this is never going to change.
We follow Zoe, a journalist investigating a years-long cold case of a missing beauty queen, who we very quickly realise has a kind of connection with Zoe. Listen, I didn't read the blurb because anything from Martyn is an auto-read, so I honestly was not expecting them to be sisters; I don’t know why. I think I was just very immersed in the writing that I didn’t see this key point coming at all, but I loved it anyways.
After we get a little bit more context of the story as we read between timelines of that fateful beauty contest and the present, I quickly caught on to what was going on. I realised who was responsible, and I kind of deduced what was the main reason for what had happened to Anne. Fortunately, I don’t care if I guess a plot twist of a book; if I really like the vibes, it’s a winner.
This book is very Laura Palmer, Twin Peaks. Even though I have never watched that show, I do listen to the soundtrack and take scenes from that series as inspiration for some of my work; the vibes are immaculate.
I can’t rave about this book enough.
Yes, 4.5 rounded down only because I think it’s a really good book, and I really think that people WILL like it, but I wouldn’t really reread it; that’s the only reason why I’m not giving this a full five stars. If you are looking for an absolute 5-star masterpiece, then may I introduce you to The Clinic by the same author? That book is just great; it is still at the top of my list from Sally-Anne Martyn. This author is always a great time.

Thank you to NetGalley for the copy of The Beauty Queen by Sally-Anne Martyn. It is 2022 and Zoe, a journalist, travels to the Forget Me Not Hotel in Sunshine Sands. Forty years ago, this was the last place her sister, Jane, was seen after winning a beauty contest. Zoe is hoping to uncover the truth about what happened to Jane in 1982. The story is told from two perspectives, Zoe from 2022 and Jane from 1982. It started out slowly, but the pace quickly picked up with lots of twists and turns. This was a suspenseful thriller that was a quick and easy read.

This was a very pleasant surprise! I definitely enjoyed this book, very engaging and a super fast read. Recommended!
