Definitely makes apetite for more!
Was quite confusing in the beginning and it took me a moment to find in the story. Still, i find it quite interesting and im curious to read more, when it will be published.
An Exciting Prospect…
An extract of what will soon be a Christmas murder mystery with a difference where six people, all with links to the literary world of crime, have been invited to a play a game by the rather elusive Midwinter Trust in an idyllic Yorkshire village. The prize, they are told, will be potentially life changing. With six members of the Trust also in attendance and the village about to become cut off by a snow storm, what could possibly go wrong? This is a tremendously exciting prospect and will, no doubt, be both intriguing and entertaining, brimming with red herrings, clues and misdirection galore.
I knew I'd love this book as soon as I read the blurb and although I have only read the extract so far I know it's going to be a book I need to read ahead of next Christmas. The opening is intriguing and I was so disappointed when I reached the end of the extract... I need to know more!
to the crime writing world are invited to play a festive game by the Midwinter Trust. Simply solve the fictional murder of a crime writer to change their luck forever. Playing fair is at the heart of the task – which is important when the six are cut off from the village by a snow storm.
From the premise and this small extract this seems very interesting. I like the setup with the rules, and can't wait for the book to be out. I'll be sure to puck it up once it's out.
I really enjoyed the writing style of Martin Edwards, it was reminiscent of Raymond Chandler and Agatha Christie writings and the air of mystery that eminates from the extract is on point for a very intriguing and fun mystery book.
I cannot wait for the final version of the book to be out.
Thank you to NetGalley and Aria & Aries for an extract from an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a great story with lots of unexpected (to me!) turns. The format added a lot to the story telling. This is a great book to pick up and spend with a rainy afternoon!
More I need more. What I have read so far has completely got me hooked. I need to read the rest of this book. I need to know what happens next!!
A sampler - so not reviewing in detail for the risk of giving anything away, but Martin Edwards has always been playful and clever in his writing - whether it's in the stories themselves or little twists/ easter eggs/ bonuses (the cluefinder from Hemlock Bay being an example).
This looks as if it's taking cozy crime to the next level of multi media innovation and looking forward to it very much!
I love Martin Edwards' work and was intrigued to read this sample of his 2025 novel Miss Winter in the Library with a Knife. The extract was just enough to pique my interest and I very much look forward to reading the whole book when the time comes.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC extract of this book from Net Galley.
I enjoyed the opening pages of this book. It beautifully sets up a page-turner of a book.
Two people are out in a snowstorm, battling to see what is before them. They are looking for someone. But who? And why did this person go out in a snowstorm in the first place?
We are then introduced to two characters who are heading to the village of Midwinter as part of a Christmas murder mystery. As they are about to be snowed in due to a huge snowstorm the attendees are eager to get to town before the storm hits. From the first few pages the attendees look to be in for a killer Christmas.
Really looking forward to reading the full book when it comes out later in 2025.
I received an extract of this novel for reviewing purposes and can honestly say, those three chapters were not enough to fully form an opinion about the book. The extract packed a lot: village history, description of the game, a reading list, a true crime podcast, and some character introductions.
Six crime writers are invited to a snowy village in north Yorkshire where they are supposed to solve the murder of a fictional writer. Six members of staff are present to make sure everything runs smoothly. Add the usual tropes: a snowstorm, not everyone is playing fair, hidden agendas,... Colour me intrigued.
I can see this Christmas themed murder mystery working very well as an audiobook, hopefully with a cast of narrators.
This was an extract from NetGalley and was such a fun, quick read from the book. The concept seems engaging and definitely entertaining. A whodunnit, a whydunnit and a howdunnit is how it was put and I can’t wait for the full story!
Thank you NetGalley for the sampling.
I don't normally bother with extracts as they are not enough to get into the book, however this extract shows that the author has a great sense of humour and I enjoyed reading this. I look forward to being able to read the finalised copy when it appears next year. As it is only an extract I did not feel that it was fair to award higher than a 4.
Fantastic, can’t wait to read the whole story, this little sample certainly has me hooked.
The village of Midwinter is remote and the Midwinter Trust that oversees the village is running a Christmas Murder game, we are treating to hints and clues as to the game, the village and some of the guests who are to play the game, it seems they are all connected through crime writing, but by anything else?
Really looking forward to the book.
An enjoyable extract from a stalwart of the British classic crime scene! I hope the rest of the book is as good.
“Miss Winter in the Library with a Knife” by Martin Edwards ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3 stars)
Thank you to NetGalley and Head of Zeus for an extract from an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
A whodunit, howdunit, and whydunit wrapped in classic mystery tropes – a snowbound village, a locked ice house, cryptic clues, and characters hiding secrets. I mean, who could resist?
The extract I received was just 35 pages, so while it’s hard to form a full picture, there’s definitely intrigue. The story flicks between character introductions, the game’s premise, a true crime podcast, village history, and even a reading list – all within a short space. It felt a little disjointed, almost like too much packed in at once. However, I suspect the full novel will allow for a smoother, more immersive experience.
Six crime-adjacent contestants are invited by the mysterious Midwinter Trust to solve the murder of a fictional writer in a remote Yorkshire village. With snowstorms closing in and staff from the Trust watching their every move, things inevitably take a darker turn. When the prize is life-changing, who wouldn’t be tempted to break the rules?
I can see this working well as an audiobook – the layers of narrative seem like they’d lend themselves to being read aloud. That said, the extract alone wasn’t enough to compel me to purchase the book, but I’d happily borrow it from the library when it’s released.
If you love classic crime setups with a modern twist, this might be one to keep an eye on!

An intriguing extract that jumped around a little and just as I was getting into it, it came to an end. This has the potential to be a man addictive festive murder mystery.
Thanks to NetGalley for the earc extract.
„Miss Winter in the library with a knife“ is a Christmas themed murder mystery. A group of mystery/crime authors get invited to a game of whodunnit and whydunnit in a secluded small town inhabited only by members of a prestigious society.
This extract was quite short, so I can’t properly delve into the execution of the book (as I have only gotten to read the first 3 chapters). As I am missing this vital aspect of the book, I haven’t properly been able to form an opinion yet. What I can say is that the premise of the book sounds quite interesting and there appears to be an alternate story that would connect to the main plot later on. Both of these aspects of the book intrigued me. However the writing style felt a little pretentious at times, which would have been fine, had it fit with the storyline. This however wasn’t the case.
Overall I would like to know how the book continues, but if none of my friends or family just so happen to come in possession of a copy, I most likely wont be reading the rest of the story. The book started of okay, but not strongly enough for me to inconvenience myself in order to continue it.
I really enjoyed the Extract from this book and will more than likely pick up a copy when it is released. The description sounds really interesting and I look forward to seeing where the story goes.
