This was a very engaging read. Great characters in Vivi and Tate, Vivi was very brave, sometimes a bit reckless, Tate obviously cared about Vivi and was determined to make sure that she didn’t come to any harm. The story starts first of all in France in 1792 when Vivi was 13 years old. The main story is in 1803 in France, a troubled time. Vivi has her own agenda and Tate insists on helping her. This was very tense at times, it became a real page turner. There is danger, surprises and some sadness but some people’s get their comeuppance and there is a happy ending. I received a copy an have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Dragonblade Publishing for this ARC.
I didn’t realize that this was the third book in a series when I requested it, but when I have, I decided to read the first book in the series, Lord Ashley’s Beautiful Alibi (available on Kindle Unlimited). That was a good decision for me as it gives a good introduction to the series historical and political backdrop of life in France (and England occasionally) during The Terror and the following times of Bonaparte’s ascend to power. I genuinely enjoy this era and it low key reminds me of reading The Scarlet Pimpernel. The writing took a moment for me to get used to but I liked how it went.
The characters are interesting and I enjoyed the relationship between Vivi and Tate; family friends to lovers, a mystery to solve, an adventure and adversity to overcome together. Also Vivi’s family dynamics added some spice to the story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are about 16 books proposed for this series. They are on shorter side and I think I will enjoy reading them.
Well-written, suspenseful, and romantic, this novel takes one on a heart-pounding journey into the turmoil and horrors of the French Revolution and the uneasy years that followed. Vivi wants answers and is determined to get them by any means possible, even when the man she has always loved gets in the way of her investigation. Tate is horrified when he realizes that Vivi is treading the boards in Paris instead of her half-sister, and instinctively knows what she is about. Fortunately, he has access to the necessary intelligence and together with his friends is able to keep Vivi safe. As the danger escalates, Tate needs to get Vivi to safety, which means evading the French military by any route possible. It is only then that he is free to express his feelings for the woman who has always been special to him. The novel is part of a series and characters from the previous books appear in this one too, but it is nevertheless a standalone and comes to a bitter-sweet conclusion as Vivi confronts the true cause of her family's sorrow. I received a copy of this exciting book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
The characters are visually stunning with depth, character, and motives. Who is playing which side drives the story. I connected with many of the characters. They flew off the page and into my heart.
The historical accuracy is flawless, but I’ve come to expect that from this author. Every detail resonates with the reader and draws them in. I immersed myself in this high-action Regency romance and couldn’t stop reading.
If you like suspense with your Regency romance, this is your next must-read.
This was interesting, a different setting from my usual reading. This took place at the end of the French Revolution and the beginning of Napoleon's renewed war on Britain. Vivienne and her family lost a lot on their escape to England. Tate, who helped Vivienne's family escape, took them to his home in England. With a push from her eldest sister, Vivienne headed back to Paris for vengeance. Vivienne was very determined and tenacious in her search for the truth of that horrible night. Tate was so protective of her and wore his heart on his sleeve. Good story.
I received an ARC through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.
Vivienne de Massé goes to Paris impersonating her eldest sister, the infamous Drury Lane actress, Charmaine Massey. Viv has a reason and a plan to avenge the capture and death of their other sister during the Terror. Tate Cantrell, Lord Appleby is the only man who sees right through her.
The third book in this brilliant series & once again it’s set in France at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the prologue is set in the time of the French Revolution. The prologue is gripping & had me on the edge of my seat, things then calm but the author conveys how tenuous life was in France, several times I was tempted to read the ending, just to make sure everything worked out (I didn’t!) Another very well written & researched book by the author & a lovely mix of fiction interwoven into the facts. I loved both Tate & Vivi, the chemistry between them sizzled & they’d fallen for each other years before but events, not of their making, kept them apart. I loved their journey to a HEA, it’s engrossing, at times harrowing, there are surprises but most of all a love that can’t be denied
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
This was a strong third entry in the Scarlett Affairs series, it had that element that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall feel of the plot. The characters were everything that I was looking for from the previous two books. It had that historical element that I was looking for and glad I read this. Cerise DeLand has a strong writing style and was glad I read this.
Thank you NetGalley for this interesting read taking place mostly in Paris. It starts when the mobs attacked the wealthy and they had to leave Paris. There were three sisters, their mother and the friend of the family. Tate Cantrell. The middle sister is grabbed out of their coach and though Tate gave chase he was unable to get Diane back. Vivi impersonates her oldest sister going back years later as an actress which Charmaine looks enough like her she is able to pull it off. Tate has been looking for Vivi and realizes that is her on the stage when he goes to see her sister. Tate wants to marry Vivi and helps her all he can to try to find our what happened to Diane. They find they have to leave again in a rush. The story keeps you involved trying to learn what happened in the past and whether they will get together to return to England.
When Tate, an English spy in Paris, goes to the theatre he is shocked to find that the leading lady is not Charmaine, but her sister Vivienne masquerading as Charmaine. Vivienne is the woman he left behind in England many years ago. Vivienne is on a dangerous course to find out how her sister Diane died when they were fleeing France. They reunite to work together and restart the feelings they have always had for each other. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.
A novel set during the French Revolution when many families were separated during the atrocities. Much of the story centers around the daughters as the youngest tries to find out what happened to the next eldest. Like many at that time the survivors became French emigres in England. When Napoleon reigns the youngest returns to France to find her sister with the help of a British diplomat who tries to keep her safe. Lots of intrigue, violence, and decadence.
