She’s out to avenge her sister’s death by any means necessary, that is, until he unmasks her. Now, both Vivienne and Tate are playing a dangerous game. Can they work together to bring those responsible to justice? Lord Appleby's Gorgeous Imposter: A Regency Historical Romance (Scarlett Affairs Book 3) is an intoxicating historical romance I couldn’t stop reading. Cerise DeLand has outdone herself yet again with Lord Appleby's Gorgeous Imposter: A Regency Historical Romance (Scarlett Affairs Book 3). This Regency romance is high stakes with characters who’ll leave their mark on you. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. I lost sleep over this couple and this story.
My heart went out to Vivienne the first moment I read from her POV. She’s feisty, independent, and quick-thinking. Her heart is broken after the capture and death of her sister. But her plans deflate when Tate bursts into her dressing room. Thus, the game of love and spying begins. I connected with Viv from the beginning.
The romance is deeply emotional. Cerise is a master when it comes to writing romance. It’s historically accurate, full of emotion, and soul satisfying. There’s conflict and tension but love wins in the end.
If you love historical romance set in the Regency era, pick up Lord Appleby's Gorgeous Imposter: A Regency Historical Romance (Scarlett Affairs Book 3). You’ll be swept away.
My Rating: 5+ stars
This is my first in the series and it was a pretty good read. The characters Tate and Viv have a history together, but circumstances tore them apart. Now after a few years Tate finds Viv again and he is free to marry her. His conviction and his pursuit of her was pretty remarkable. He loves, he yearns, he protects and he challenges her senses. Well done romantic intrigue.

Wow, this story has it all; spies, traitors, intrigue, and a beautiful romance. At the end of the revolution, Vivienne has returned to Paris, seeking revenge for one of her sister’s death. She goes impersonating her older sister, Charmaine, a Drury Lane actress. While attending a play in Paris, her family friend, Tate Cantrell, sees her on stage. He is there working as a spy and calls her out on the dangerous undertaking she’s involved in. He has loved her for years and would do anything to protect her. He begs her to allow him to help her. A beautiful romance begins in the midst of danger and suspense.
A most enjoyable page turner!
This third book in the Scarlett Affairs series that began in Paris 1792 is very engaging and well written. I told of a mob, a kidnapping, a flee to safety, and years later, a plot for revenge is undertaken. The drama, action, intrigue, suspense, espionage, lies, secret identities, betrayals, a shocking discovery, another flight for safety, and so many more emotional issues and excitement were very entertaining. I enjoyed the romance that, regardless of and despite everything in the way, became a beautiful love. I highly recommend reading!
With an overlap of characters, reading each book in order will give you an indepth insight into each couple's love story. A network of British spies deal with the of chaos in France before Napoleon's War with Britain. Revenge maybe sweet, but Vivienne learns that all is not what it seems. Lord Appleby has always loved her and will stop at nothing to protect her. Kept me glued to my Kindle. (No interruptions please!)
Descriptive sex.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from NetGalley.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Dragonblade Publishing for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the uniqueness of the setting, and seeing Paris as it changes post revolution. The fmc was admirable and the story enjoyable.
Book three in this series. I’ve read and loved the previous books. There is a connection (the men this the last two books are known by Tate.) But it doesn’t mean you have to read them in order.
This book takes place at the end of the French Revolution, but at the beginning of Napoleon's renewed war on Britain! It’s dangerous time being in France, families lose lives and loved ones in this period.
The prologue was gripping, this was set just a little earlier (in the French Revolution period!)
Tate has known this family for a long time, he helped Vivienne's family escape, and took them to his home in England. With Vivienne he definitely wore his heart on his sleeve, and was absolutely terrified and scared that something would happen to her, so he takes it upon himself to find and bring her back!
Vivienne was born in France, but fled to England to escape the terror. Now she's back to get her revenge! Vivienne, I felt was really tenacious in her search for the truth of that horrible night. And I admired her spirit and courage when she decides to return to France and find her sister.
This book was well written and really well researched, it has a few discrepancies (but that’s the authors take on it and has to write a few things differently.)
Both Tate and Vivienne have feelings for one another, but circumstances have kept them apart. But now he’s got her in his sights, there is nothing stopping him from claiming her, well, except for her! She is consumed with finding justice for her sister.
It’s a fast paced adventure, with lots of intrigue and suspense.

This book was an enjoyable read. The first time I have read this series but was able to follow along quite well. The suspense, spying detail and the relationship between the main characters kept me engaged and wanting to know more. Viv goes undercover as her older sister, Charmaine to find her. Tate goes searching for Viv when she goes missing while looking for her sister. A lot of drama, chemistry between Viv and Tate and a whole lot of detail to keep you interested.
I received an ARC from the publishers and NetGalley and submit my honest review voluntarily.
Lord Appleby’s Gorgeous Imposter by Cerise Deland opens during the French Revolution when Vivi’s family is packing to escape. They receive help from a young friend of their father’s, Englishman Tate Cantrell. It fast forwards to years later in England. Tate had always loved Vivi but had been forced to marry according to his father’s wishes. He had helped the refugees with a cottage on his estate and ways to support themselves. Living lives changes people and when they got another chance, one or the other is not always ready. This is one of those stories. And a terrific one it is.
Both are lovely characters. Vivi has two sisters, one of which is nothing more than a manipulator, hence a career on the stage. For some reason Vivi is pretending to be her sister, but the minute Tate sees her on stage in Paris, he recognizes her. The story unfolds, as both are somewhat undercover. It is an entrancing story. Both excellent characters, neither having had an entirely easy life. Great settings. Excellent time for the story to take place. Both are older and wiser, excellent characters, both. A compelling romance and excellent story.
I was invited to read Lord Appleby’s Gorgeous Imposter by Dragonblade. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #CeriseDeland #LordApplebysGorgoeusImposter
We go to France this time for our historical romance. Our heroine was born there and fled to England to escape the terror. Now she's back to enact revenge.
Our hero is an English nobleman who has spent a lot of time in France. Both before the terror and after.
I have read the previous books in this series, but if you haven't, you can still enjoy this one. The heroes in the series are friends so you will see mentions of them but not enough to spoil their books if you read them out of order.
The characters are all brave and put other's lives above their own. Luckily love can overcome many obstacles.
Great fun.
While you were undercover...
Viv goes under cover as her actress older sister to find their other sister.
Tate has helped her family escape from France and restart a life in England, except not everyone got out. So, years later, Viv goes to search for their lost sister. Tate married a wealthy heiress, not Viv. Finally widowed, he goes in search of Viv after she disappears looking for her lost sister.
There's a lot of drama, angst and drama.
I absolutely love this series and wait with great anticipation to each new story. I'm never disappointed, so first if you like suspense, history, spying, a look at the relationship between France and England as well as a step into the Terror in France then you will want to immediately pick up this book. Added to this are amazing characters with depth, chemistry, a bit of steam and a second opportunity to find a happy ending. Viv is on a mission and Tate has been searching for her as has the entire spy network run by a friend. Wholely engaging and once you begin reading it you won't put it down.
A heartfelt friends to lovers, second chance at love story that I really enjoyed. The plot runs more or less parallel to the earlier books in the series and captures the mood of the terror of the French Revolution and later the days leading up to the outbreak of war between Napoleon's France and England very well. I really like the imagery the author uses to describe the turmoil but also the decadence of the beau monde. The plot is very well written and full of emotion, unexpected twists, suspense, danger, intrigue, some steam and very likeable protagonists with a wonderful chemistry between them, who have been star-crossed lovers for a long time until they finally find their happy ending in the turmoil around them.
I was pleased to meet the main characters and also the antagonists again from the previous books. It is not essential to have read the other parts, but I still recommend it.
As a young girl, Vivienne de Massé fled the terror of the French Revolution together with her mother, her two older sisters Charmaine and Diane with the help of a family friend, the young English nobleman Tate Cantrell, but Diane was abducted by the mob during the escape and even Tate was unable to save her. The emigrated family built a new life in England with Tate's support, but the loss of Diane and Vivienne's father, the Comte de Neufchateau, who was executed, placed a heavy burden on the family. Vivienne and Tate's friendship turned to love, but they could not marry as his father forced him to marry an Englishwoman with a large dowry to replenish the empty family coffers and an impoverished émigré would never do for the heir of an earldom.
The now widowed Tate Cantrell and new Earl of Appleby has been working undercover as a spy for Scarlett Hawthorne for years. When Vivienne disappeared without a trace a year ago, he was distraught. Suddenly seeing her on stage in Paris, pretending to be her older sister, comes as a shock to him and the people she surrounds herself with are dangerous.
Vivienne has come back to Paris to find out what happened to Diane and to take revenge on the people responsible for her family's misfortune. She can't afford to weaken around Tate, even though he now stalks her at every turn...
Overall, a gripping story with interesting historical and cultural tidbits, and a touching love story that I am happy to recommend!
I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.
This was a very engaging read. Great characters in Vivi and Tate, Vivi was very brave, sometimes a bit reckless, Tate obviously cared about Vivi and was determined to make sure that she didn’t come to any harm. The story starts first of all in France in 1792 when Vivi was 13 years old. The main story is in 1803 in France, a troubled time. Vivi has her own agenda and Tate insists on helping her. This was very tense at times, it became a real page turner. There is danger, surprises and some sadness but some people’s get their comeuppance and there is a happy ending. I received a copy an have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Dragonblade Publishing for this ARC.
I didn’t realize that this was the third book in a series when I requested it, but when I have, I decided to read the first book in the series, Lord Ashley’s Beautiful Alibi (available on Kindle Unlimited). That was a good decision for me as it gives a good introduction to the series historical and political backdrop of life in France (and England occasionally) during The Terror and the following times of Bonaparte’s ascend to power. I genuinely enjoy this era and it low key reminds me of reading The Scarlet Pimpernel. The writing took a moment for me to get used to but I liked how it went.
The characters are interesting and I enjoyed the relationship between Vivi and Tate; family friends to lovers, a mystery to solve, an adventure and adversity to overcome together. Also Vivi’s family dynamics added some spice to the story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are about 16 books proposed for this series. They are on shorter side and I think I will enjoy reading them.
Well-written, suspenseful, and romantic, this novel takes one on a heart-pounding journey into the turmoil and horrors of the French Revolution and the uneasy years that followed. Vivi wants answers and is determined to get them by any means possible, even when the man she has always loved gets in the way of her investigation. Tate is horrified when he realizes that Vivi is treading the boards in Paris instead of her half-sister, and instinctively knows what she is about. Fortunately, he has access to the necessary intelligence and together with his friends is able to keep Vivi safe. As the danger escalates, Tate needs to get Vivi to safety, which means evading the French military by any route possible. It is only then that he is free to express his feelings for the woman who has always been special to him. The novel is part of a series and characters from the previous books appear in this one too, but it is nevertheless a standalone and comes to a bitter-sweet conclusion as Vivi confronts the true cause of her family's sorrow. I received a copy of this exciting book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
The characters are visually stunning with depth, character, and motives. Who is playing which side drives the story. I connected with many of the characters. They flew off the page and into my heart.
The historical accuracy is flawless, but I’ve come to expect that from this author. Every detail resonates with the reader and draws them in. I immersed myself in this high-action Regency romance and couldn’t stop reading.
If you like suspense with your Regency romance, this is your next must-read.
This was interesting, a different setting from my usual reading. This took place at the end of the French Revolution and the beginning of Napoleon's renewed war on Britain. Vivienne and her family lost a lot on their escape to England. Tate, who helped Vivienne's family escape, took them to his home in England. With a push from her eldest sister, Vivienne headed back to Paris for vengeance. Vivienne was very determined and tenacious in her search for the truth of that horrible night. Tate was so protective of her and wore his heart on his sleeve. Good story.
I received an ARC through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.
Vivienne de Massé goes to Paris impersonating her eldest sister, the infamous Drury Lane actress, Charmaine Massey. Viv has a reason and a plan to avenge the capture and death of their other sister during the Terror. Tate Cantrell, Lord Appleby is the only man who sees right through her.
The third book in this brilliant series & once again it’s set in France at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the prologue is set in the time of the French Revolution. The prologue is gripping & had me on the edge of my seat, things then calm but the author conveys how tenuous life was in France, several times I was tempted to read the ending, just to make sure everything worked out (I didn’t!) Another very well written & researched book by the author & a lovely mix of fiction interwoven into the facts. I loved both Tate & Vivi, the chemistry between them sizzled & they’d fallen for each other years before but events, not of their making, kept them apart. I loved their journey to a HEA, it’s engrossing, at times harrowing, there are surprises but most of all a love that can’t be denied
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
This was a strong third entry in the Scarlett Affairs series, it had that element that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall feel of the plot. The characters were everything that I was looking for from the previous two books. It had that historical element that I was looking for and glad I read this. Cerise DeLand has a strong writing style and was glad I read this.
