This was great. Informative and fascinating without being dry or repetitive. I only have the mildest interest in mafia history; I don’t read mafia books and have not seen a do by le episode of the Sopranos and this books makes me want to watch them (if only I could skip the violence) just to see what I read come to life again

Thanks to NetGalley and Recorded Books for the Audio ARC!

This book was a little weird, if I'm honest. The historical sections were super interesting and informative, but the other bits felt like Neil Strauss's 'The Game', but for wannabe mobsters instead of wannabe players. Still, a quick read, and pretty interesting overall.

The rules of the bosses do not feel like just a laundry list of things to check off to become a boss, rather, they seem to be like the signs from above, the facts of life, that a person will become a boss, that it is their destiny.

Told in a very interesting second person perspective, this audiobook is a great introduction into the history of the mafia for those wanting to dip their feet into its early years without needing much prior knowledge. Its structure differentiates this book from other history books avoiding becoming a simple recollection of facts, wanting the reader to deeply understand what the mafia is instead of just knowing of them.

Divided into two main sections, this book focuses on all the little details and personality traits that paint the broader picture of how bosses to rise and fall from power. It does so by not focusing on one single mafia boss, but by instead telling the common story of the lifecycle of most bosses, that by the end seem to almost be prophetic. The first section, is a combination of context, history and reflections on the stages a person will go through to become a boss. It tells the possible ascent or downfall of any one person that might end up becoming a Don. It focuses mainly on how their introduction into the cosa nostra almost sets the path for their career in it and how their choices from there will define how it will end. Once a Don is born, the rules they should follow to succeed (for as long as possible) are presented, in the second section, and they're all based on the advice of Machiavelli across the centuries, thanks to his book, "The Prince". These rules cover the obvious to the unexpected, followed with real life examples that help the reader see the consequences of not following them.

Even to those with a more extensive knowledge of the history of the mafia, this choice of storytelling repackages the facts they may already know, in a way that will give them a novel experience and perspective.

After listening to this audiobook, one would not be able to recount the entire history of the mafia in the US, but they would be able to recognise the personality traits and mannerisms of one.
